Clipped horses or horses without adequate shelter show cold stress at higher temperatures than unclipped horses with shelter available. Older horses or horses in poor body condition show cold stress at milder temperatures than younger, well-conditioned horses.
Wind-related stress, often underestimated, creates genuine challenges. High wind can knock horses off balance, cause panic responses, create dust or debris hazards, and dramatically increase heat loss through wind chill in cold conditions. A horse in high wind often shows anxiety, reactivity, and difficulty maintaining balance. If your horse becomes genuinely unsafe to work with due to wind, the solution is management—not more forceful handling.

During storms, if your horse is in a pasture and severe weather approaches, provide access to shelter. Your horse will likely seek shelter instinctively, but ensuring adequate shelter is available is your responsibility. Storm-related injuries similarly depend on what occurred during the panic—whether the horse collided with fencing, slipped and fell, or bolted and injured themselves during flight. Assessment and treatment follow the specific injury pattern rather than being storm-specific treatment.
Rain-related problems like mud fever (bacterial skin infection in horses exposed to perpetually wet conditions) require specific care. Drying the legs thoroughly and removing mud regularly prevents many rain-related skin conditions. If mud fever develops despite prevention efforts, consult your veterinarian for treatment.
Ice-related injuries from slipping range from minor bruising to bone fractures or tendon damage. If your horse slips on ice and becomes lame, evaluate the severity of lameness. Stud shoes with ice studs, borium-coated shoes, or specialized winter shoes designed for traction help horses maintain footing on ice. Regular arena maintenance that removes ice accumulation and maintains safe footing also prevents many ice-related injuries.
