But even for seniors, start with a quality diet appropriate for their age, then add supplements only if problems appear.

Hard keepers need to focus on diet before supplements. A hard keeper needs calories and nutrition, which comes from more hay or better grain, not from supplements. That said, a hard keeper with digestive inefficiency might genuinely benefit from probiotic or enzyme supplementation to improve nutrient absorption. If you've already maximized diet and the horse still struggles, then supplements become relevant.

Easy keepers should avoid supplements that add calories.
