Section 1 Overview
Honestly, I don't like stalling horses. It's not how they're built to live, and it causes problems. But some situations require stalling—you're in an area where pasture isn't viable, or your horse has health issues, or you're managing multiple horses in a boarding situation. If you're going to do it, you do it right.
A good stall is generous in size, well-ventilated, safe, and as low-stress as possible. It's not a prison. It's a space where a horse can eat, sleep, move around a little, and be relatively okay even though they're not in a natural situation. It's harm reduction. You can't make stalling natural, but you can make it as good as it's going to get.
The worst stalls are small, dark, poorly ventilated spaces where horses stand for sixteen hours a day developing all kinds of problems. Cribbing, weaving, laminitis, depression—these are stall problems. Horses aren't meant to be confined. If you're stalling, understand that you're accepting that trade-off for whatever reason makes sense for your situation.
A well-designed stall minimizes behavioral problems, reduces injury risk, and gives horses space to be relatively comfortable. The difference between a stall that works and one that doesn't is size, ventilation, light, and safety. Get those right and you're as good as stalling can be.
The thing to understand is that a stall is temporary management, not ideal keeping. If you can do pasture-based or run-in shelter, that's better. If you're stalling, do it well but understand it's a compromise, not an ideal.

Section 2 Options And Types
The standard box stall—a twelve-by-twelve square—is the industry standard because it works and it fits in barns. It's big enough that a horse can lie down, stand up, and turn around with some care. It's not big, but it's livable. For a horse that's in and out—maybe ridden during the day, stalled at night—a twelve-by-twelve works.
Larger stalls are better if you can do them. Twelve-by-sixteen gives more room without getting silly. A horse can move around more, can lie down more comfortably, can turn with less care. If you've got the space and the resources, bigger is better.
Slip stalls or tie stall are smaller—ten-by-ten or smaller—and honestly, they're not great for horses that spend much time in them. A horse can stand and lie down but can't really move. These work for temporary holding, not for living in.
Hollow square or barn alley designs where stalls open to a center aisle allow better ventilation and visibility. You can see into the stall, you can control draft better, you can manage traffic more easily. This is a better design than a stall that's isolated.
Run-in stall combinations where a stall opens directly to outdoor area are excellent. A horse can go in and out as they choose, getting shelter but not being confined. If you've got the land, this is the best stall setup.
Pen stalls or larger enclosures—maybe twenty-by-thirty or larger—allow more natural movement and herd dynamics if you're managing multiple horses. These are more like small pastures with shelter than traditional stalls. They're better for horse welfare.
Mat or shavings flooring is the standard. Rubber mats with shavings on top provide cushioning and drainage. Straw alone is traditional but requires more management. Sand is not great—it compacts and creates a hard surface. Mats with good bedding are the way to go.
Elevated or banked stalls where the stall floor is raised slightly allow better drainage and reduce the swamp effect of poorly drained stalls. If your area is wet, elevation matters.
Natural or clear roofing can provide light without creating hazards. A dark, gloomy stall is depressing. Light helps. But you need to manage it so it's not creating draft or rain into the stall.
Partial walls or open-front designs create better ventilation and light than fully enclosed stalls. A stall where you can see neighbors reduces behavioral issues. Open design is friendlier than box-in-a-box.
Mangers and feeders that are well-designed encourage natural eating posture and reduce hay waste. A manger at chest height where the horse eats like they would eat hay—that's better than feeding from the ground or from overhead racks that create unnatural head position.
Section 3 Design And Requirements
Size is the foundation of a functional stall. Minimum for a horse that's only stalled at night is twelve-by-twelve. That's not generous but it works for temporary. If a horse is stalled for extended periods, twelve-by-sixteen is better. If you're building, bigger than that if you can manage it.
Floor needs to be properly drained and have good surface. Bare earth is muddy. Concrete is hard and creates joint stress. A base of gravel for drainage with rubber mats on top and bedding on top of that works well. The goal is a surface that drains well, provides some cushioning, and doesn't become a mud pit.
Ventilation is critical. A stall that traps ammonia and moisture causes respiratory problems. You need air movement through the stall. This might be natural cross-ventilation from windows or doors, or it might be designed ventilation. The goal is fresh air without draft directly on the horse.
Light helps with mood and behavior. A dark stall is depressing. Windows or skylights that provide natural light without creating draft or rain hazard are ideal. If you can't do natural light, good lighting helps.
Headroom should be at least eight feet, preferably nine or ten. A horse can be taller than the stall by standing on back legs, but they shouldn't be ducking under beams. Headroom affects how a horse feels in the space.
Doorway needs to be wide and clear. A narrow door makes entry and exit stressful, especially if a horse spooks. Standard is about four feet wide. Clear of obstacles so a horse isn't bunging off the edges getting in or out.
Walls need to be solid and smooth. Protruding boards, bolts, nails—all hazards. A horse in a stall gets anxious and can damage themselves on rough surfaces. Smooth walls prevent injury.
Manger or hay rack positioning should encourage natural eating. Neck flexion at eating height is better than head-down eating or head-up eating. Positioning at appropriate height reduces strain and encourages eating posture that horses would naturally use.
Water access should be reliable. A trough or automatic waterer that works. If it doesn't, horses won't drink. Dehydrated horses get colic. You need working water access.
Fencing or gates need to be secure and easy to open and close. A gate that's hard to close doesn't get closed. A gate that's easy to open gets damaged. You need solid, functional gates that you'll actually use properly.
Bedding depth should be enough that a horse lying down has cushioning. Four to six inches of good bedding prevents pressure sores and makes the stall comfortable.
Slope or banking for drainage matters in wet climates. If your stall is in low ground, slight slope ensures water runs out rather than pooling.
Hashing or rubber flooring on floors that are hard prevents slipping. A horse slipping when standing or getting up is injury risk. Good footing is essential.
Section 4 Safety Considerations
Structural safety means no rough edges, no protruding hazards, nothing that a horse can cut themselves on. A horse in an enclosed space sometimes panics. They can injure themselves on anything that's sharp or rough. Stall design should eliminate those hazards.
Fencing should be strong enough to contain a horse safely. Weak fencing that a horse can break is both an escape risk and an injury risk if the horse runs through it. Solid, strong fencing is necessary.
Gate hinges and latches need to be secure. A gate that swings open unexpectedly is dangerous. Latches should be design so they don't accidentally open during handling or movement.
Ventilation without draft is important. A stall needs air movement but not a wind tunnel. If wind is blowing directly on a horse for hours, it's stressful and unhealthy. Manage ventilation so there's air movement without direct draft.
Floor footing needs to be safe. Slippery floors cause slips and injury. Uneven floors are hazardous. Good, level, non-slip flooring is important.
Light and visibility are safety factors. A dark stall is disorienting and stressful. Horses that can see around them are less likely to panic. Windows or adequate lighting help safety.
Feed and water placement should be safe. A trough that's too high or too low creates awkward drinking posture. A manger that's positioned poorly creates eating posture that stresses the neck. Appropriate placement is safety.
Height clearance is necessary for safety. A horse that has to duck under beams learns to duck, which creates head injuries. Adequate height prevents this.
Gate design that horses can't get caught in is important. Horses get cast—stuck lying down in a corner. Sloped corners or design that prevents cast situations is safer. Some stalls have emergency release or openings that help a cast horse.
Manure accumulation should be managed. A stall that becomes a manure pile is unsanitary and creates ammonia that's respiratory hazard.
Bedding that's not eaten is better than straw that horses eat and get impaction from. Shavings or other bedding that's not digestible is safer than straw if your horse is a bedding eater.
Chewing hazards should be removed. Horses crib on wood. A stall with unprotected wood becomes a cribbing opportunity. Cribbing causes behavioral issues and damages your facility. Design and management should prevent this.
Section 5 Maintenance And Management
Daily mucking is the reality of stalled horses. You're removing manure, pulling wet bedding, and maintaining a clean stall. This is daily work, non-negotiable. A stall that's not mucked becomes a cesspool.
Mucking routine depends on the horse and the bedding. Some horses defecate in certain areas, making mucking easier. Some horses pee everywhere. You learn your horse's pattern and work with it.
Bedding management means adding clean bedding regularly. You're replacing what was removed, adding fresh material to absorb wetness. Some stalls need refreshing daily. Some need full bedding changes a few times a week.
Floor maintenance means checking for problems. A stall floor that's deteriorating needs repair. Gaps in mats become tripping hazards. Bedding that's compressed needs replacement.
Water maintenance is daily. Troughs need to be cleaned and filled. Automatic waterers need to be checked that they're working. Water needs to be clean and available.
Ventilation management means opening and closing doors and windows to manage air flow. A stall that's too enclosed in summer gets stale. A stall that's drafty in winter is unhealthy. Managing ventilation for the season is part of maintenance.
Strucutral inspection is periodic. Look for rot, loose boards, protruding nails, damage. Repair issues before they become hazards or damage the horse.
Feed management means providing appropriate hay and grain. A horse in a stall is eating hay that you're providing, so quality and quantity matter. Good hay, appropriate portions, fresh food.
Exercise is important for stalled horses. Turnout, riding, lunging—something to get them out and moving. A horse stalled 24/7 without exercise develops problems. Even stalled horses need activity.
Behavioral monitoring is important. Vices like cribbing, weaving, stall-walking—these develop in stalled horses. Early intervention when you see these developing helps prevent them from becoming entrenched.
Cleaning and disinfection help prevent disease. Stalls should be cleaned thoroughly, bedding changed, areas disinfected occasionally to prevent buildup of pathogens.
Roof maintenance if the stall has a roof section means checking for leaks, keeping it clear of debris. A leaky stall is miserable for a horse.
Season management means adjusting for temperature. Winter might mean extra bedding for warmth. Summer might mean managing ventilation for cooling.
Fencing repair happens when damage appears. A loose board, a damaged hinge, a gate that doesn't close properly—these get fixed promptly so the stall stays safe and secure.
Gate maintenance means lubricating hinges, adjusting latches, keeping them functional. A gate that's hard to open doesn't get used properly.
Regular inspection and maintenance prevents small problems from becoming big ones. A few minutes daily looking at your stalls catches issues early.
Section 6 Cost And Planning
Building or installing stalls is expensive. A single stall with mats, rubber, good construction might cost $3,000-5,000 if you're building it yourself. If you're hiring a contractor, add labor costs. Multiple stalls decrease per-stall cost but you're still looking at significant investment.
Rubber mats for one stall might cost $500-1,000. Mats are expensive but they last years. They make a big difference in comfort and durability.
Bedding is an ongoing cost. Good quality shavings might cost $5-10 per bale, and a stall might need four to six bales per change depending on size and management. If you're changing weekly, you're looking at $150-250 per month per stall.
Systems and infrastructure—waterers, feeders, mangers—add cost. A good automatic waterer might cost $200-500. Feeders and mangers add to that.
Structural materials—wood, bolts, hardware—are expensive. Building sturdy, lasting stalls requires good materials.
Labor is the biggest variable. If you're mucking stalls yourself, that's your time and energy daily. If you're paying someone to muck, that's $10-20 per stall per day, which adds up quickly.
Maintenance costs are ongoing. Repairs, replacements, cleaning supplies—these add up.
Total monthly cost per stalled horse including bedding, maintenance, and labor might be $200-500 per stall depending on location and management. This is why many people prefer pasture or boarding facilities where costs are spread.
Stalls for a commercial facility might be different economics—higher upfront investment but spread across many horses. Personal stalls are expensive per-horse.
Timing affects cost. Building stalls when you need them versus planning ahead and building when you can find deals affects cost. Buying bedding off-season is cheaper than buying when you're desperate.
Alternative housing like run-in shelters or pasture-based systems costs less initially and less in maintenance. If you're considering stalls, understand the cost difference.
Multiple horses might make stalling more feasible if you're spreading labor and infrastructure. One horse in a stall is expensive and labor-intensive. Multiple horses spread the work.
Considering stalls long-term means understanding the commitment. This isn't something you do short-term unless the horse is in and out. Stalling is maintenance-intensive and ongoing.
