Diagnosis of a snake bite is usually based on finding puncture wounds consistent with a bite, observing sudden swelling, or witnessing a bite. In some cases, the snake is seen, confirmed the species, and allows assessment of envenomation risk. In other cases, a horse appears with swelling and signs and the bite isn't witnessed—diagnosis is made based on symptoms and examination findings.

Assessment of envenomation severity is made by evaluating swelling extent and progression, looking for systemic signs, and considering the bite location and apparent age. Rapid progression of swelling, systemic signs, and swelling to critical areas like the head or throat indicate more severe envenomation.

Initial first aid after a snake bite involves keeping the horse as calm and still as possible, as movement increases venom circulation. The horse should be brought to shade, kept quiet, and prevented from further exertion. The bitten area should not be rubbed or manipulated. Most horses that survive the initial effects of a bite recover well over time, though recovery can take weeks to months depending on bite severity.

Wound care might be necessary if tissue damage is significant. After acute swelling has resolved and healing has begun, the area should be kept clean. Some wounds might require drainage or management to prevent infection. Your veterinarian will advise on specific care needs based on the extent of damage.

Feed and water should be carefully managed, particularly if swelling affected the head, neck, or muzzle, potentially interfering with eating or swallowing.
