A feed label tells you what's in the bag. Protein percentage, fat percentage, fiber, vitamins, minerals—all there. The problem is that most people don't read it or don't understand what they're reading. They buy a bag of grain because the store recommends it or it's the cheapest option, never looking at what's actually inside.
This is a mistake because two bags of grain that look similar can be dramatically different nutritionally. One might be 10 percent protein with poor mineral content. Another might be 14 percent protein with excellent mineral balance. One might have molasses and simple sugars; another might have mostly whole grains. Reading the label tells you which is which.
Feed labels are heavily regulated in the U.S. Every manufacturer has to provide certain information in certain ways. Once you understand what the label is telling you, it's simple to compare products and make informed decisions about what to feed.
The tricky part is that manufacturers are allowed to be strategic about what they emphasize and how they present information. A product might highlight that it contains "premium ingredients" while burying that it's 30 percent sugar. Or it might emphasize the protein percentage while being vague about the amino acid profile. Section 2 Nutritional Details
The guaranteed analysis is usually the front panel or a prominent place on the bag. It lists minimum percentages of protein and fat, maximum percentages of fiber and ash, and often includes minerals and vitamins. The word "guaranteed" doesn't mean these are exactly accurate; it means they're the minimum (or maximum) you're guaranteed to get.
Protein percentage is what most people look at first. A feed listing "14% protein" contains at least 14 percent protein. It might be 14.5 percent, but the label guarantees at least 14 percent. For comparing two feeds, higher protein is usually better, but not always. A 12 percent protein with excellent amino acid balance might be superior to a 14 percent with poor balance.
Fat percentage tells you the energy content. Higher fat usually means higher calories and supports coat quality. A feed with 8 percent fat provides more calories than one with 5 percent fat. For horses that need calories (working horses, hard keepers), higher fat is usually good. For easy keepers, lower fat might be better.
Fiber percentage is listed as a maximum. Most grains have 8 to 12 percent fiber, which is fine. Very high fiber (over 15 percent) suggests the feed has a lot of bulk materials and might not be as nutrient-dense. Very low fiber (under 5 percent) might mean it's heavily processed.
Ash percentage is listed as a maximum and represents the mineral content. Ash is the minerals left when all the organic material burns away. An ash content of 5 to 8 percent is typical. Very high ash might indicate sand or dirt contamination; very low ash might mean inadequate mineral content.
Calcium and phosphorus are usually listed as percentages or as a ratio. A proper ratio has calcium higher than phosphorus—usually around 1.5:1 to 2:1 calcium to phosphorus. If phosphorus is higher than calcium, the product isn't balanced properly for horses.
Trace minerals like copper, zinc, manganese, and cobalt are often listed. For a horse on this feed as a primary supplement, adequate trace mineral content matters. A product listing 10 ppm copper is more complete than one listing 5 ppm.
Vitamins listed might include vitamin A (often listed in IU per pound), vitamin E, vitamin D, and B vitamins. For a growing horse or a horse with special needs, the vitamin content matters. Old hay loses vitamin A; a feed with good vitamin A content helps compensate.
The ingredient list comes after the guaranteed analysis and lists ingredients in order of weight. The first ingredient makes up the most; the last ingredient makes up the least. Looking at the first three ingredients tells you what the feed is mostly made of.
Simple sugars or molasses listed high in the ingredient list means the feed has significant sugar content. For a PSSM horse or a metabolic horse, this matters. For a normal horse, it's not a major concern but contributes to the carbohydrate load.
Whole grains (oats, barley, corn, etc.) listed as first ingredients mean the feed is mostly whole grain. Ground grains ferment differently than whole grains in the horse's digestive system. The form matters for digestion and for certain conditions.
Section 3 Feeding Guidelines
Before buying a feed, read the whole label. Not just the protein percentage—the fiber, the fat, the minerals, the ingredients. Get a full picture of what you're actually buying.
For a basic working horse or idle horse on good hay: look for a feed with 10 to 12 percent protein, adequate trace minerals, and a simple ingredient list you recognize. The feed doesn't need to be fancy or expensive; it needs to be nutritionally appropriate.
For a young growing horse: look for 12 to 14 percent protein with excellent mineral content, especially calcium, phosphorus, copper, and zinc. The ingredient list should have legumes (alfalfa) or other quality protein sources. Price might be higher, but it's worth it for a growing horse.
For a PSSM or metabolic horse: look for NSC (non-structural carbohydrate) percentage if it's listed, aiming for under 10 percent. Look at the ingredient list—avoid molasses, avoid high-starch grains like corn. Read carefully because products marketed as "low-starch" might not actually be low-NSC.
For a hard keeper: look for higher protein (12 to 14 percent), higher fat (8 to 10 percent), and good minerals. The feed should be calorie-dense without excessive fiber. Price is less of a concern here than adequacy.
For a senior horse: look for digestible protein, adequate minerals, and products that are specifically formulated for senior horses. Senior feeds often have better amino acid profiles and higher vitamin E than regular feeds.
For a breeding mare: look for 12 to 14 percent protein, excellent minerals, and if she's pregnant or lactating, search for products specifically formulated for that stage. Nutrition during breeding is critical.
Compare feeds by looking at protein, fat, and mineral content, not just price. A feed that's $2 cheaper per bag but has inferior nutrition might actually be more expensive per unit of nutrition. Do the math: if feed A costs $20 a bag and you feed 5 pounds daily, and feed B costs $22 and you feed 4 pounds daily, calculate the daily cost of each.
Don't assume that premium or "performance" feeds are always better. Sometimes a mid-priced feed has equivalent nutrition to an expensive feed. Look at the label, not the price tag.
If a feed label doesn't clearly list something you want to know—like NSC for a metabolic horse—call the manufacturer. They'll have the information even if it's not on the label. Their customer service number is usually on the bag.
Once you find a feed that works for your horse, you don't necessarily have to change brands constantly. If your horse is doing well, consistent feeding is actually better than switching. Only change if you have a reason—your horse isn't doing well, the feed is unavailable, or your needs change.
Section 4 Horse Type Considerations
Growing horses need you to read the label carefully because growth phase and age affect what they need. A yearling formula should have higher protein and better mineral balance than a growing horse formula, which should be different from a horse formulated for mature horses. Reading labels lets you match the life stage product to your horse's actual age and growth stage.
Performance horses benefit from labels that list amino acid profiles and NSC. These details tell you if the feed is actually suitable for a high-performing horse or just marketed that way.
Metabolic or insulin-resistant horses absolutely require reading labels carefully. NSC content is critical, and not all feeds list it. Calling manufacturers to get NSC information is worth the effort for these horses because feeding wrong can cause serious problems.
Senior horses need you to understand digestibility and amino acid content, which aren't always clearly stated on labels. Senior-specific feeds are usually formulated with better digestibility; that's the advantage. Reading whether a feed is specifically formulated for seniors helps you pick appropriately.
Breeding horses need careful label reading to ensure minerals are adequate for reproduction and pregnancy/lactation. These are the times when mineral deficiency causes real problems. Labels should list adequate calcium, copper, zinc, and selenium for breeding horses.
Easy keeper horses allow more flexibility in label reading because they don't have special needs. For these horses, a simple adequate diet from reading the basic guarantee analysis usually works fine.
Hard keeper horses require attention to calorie and protein density. Reading fat percentage and protein percentage helps you pick feeds that provide sufficient calories and nutrition in reasonable amounts.
Section 5 Potential Issues
Mistaking marketing language for actual nutrition information leads people astray. A bag saying "premium" or "natural" or "performance" doesn't mean it's actually better than something without these labels. The guaranteed analysis and ingredient list tell you what's really in it; marketing language doesn't.
Not understanding that "minimum" and "maximum" mean different things causes confusion. Protein is listed as a minimum—the feed has at least that much. Fiber is listed as a maximum—it has no more than that. Confusing these leads to wrong conclusions about the feed's content.
Ignoring the ingredient list and only looking at the guaranteed analysis misses important information. Two feeds might have the same protein percentage but radically different ingredient lists. One might be high-quality whole grains; the other might be byproducts and fillers. The ingredient list tells you the quality of that protein.
Assuming that what's listed as "first ingredient" is what the horse mostly eats is wrong. Ingredients are listed by weight, which includes moisture. A grain listed as "oats (whole grain)" as the first ingredient but at 10 percent of the formula on a dry matter basis means the feed is still 90 percent something else. Percentages don't clearly tell you the actual proportion of each ingredient.
Not comparing labels between similar products wastes the opportunity to make smart choices. Reading one label tells you what's in one feed. Comparing two labels tells you which is actually better for your horse. Take time to compare.
Assuming that more expensive feeds are always better causes people to overspend unnecessarily. Some expensive feeds have outstanding nutrition. Others have similar nutrition to mid-priced feeds but cost more because of branding or marketing. Labels let you compare across price points.
Ignoring feed changes in midseason or multiple bags from the same brand but different batches can mean you're accidentally feeding different products. Formula changes happen; batch differences occur. Spot-checking labels occasionally catches unexpected changes.
Section 6 Practical Tips
When you buy a new feed, take a picture of the label with your phone. You can reference it later without having to keep the bag. This is helpful for veterinary visits or consulting with a nutritionist.
Keep a list of nutrients you care about for your specific horse—protein percentage, fat percentage, copper, zinc, NSC if he's metabolic. When comparing feeds, check these specific nutrients. You don't need to analyze every single number.
Call the feed company's customer service if the label doesn't have information you need. They have complete nutritional information even if the bag label is abbreviated. They're usually happy to help.
If you find a feed that works well for your horse, write down the brand, product name, and batch number. This helps you reorder the same product and reference it if problems develop later.
If a feed label changes—maybe the company updated the formula—notice it. Changes can affect horses. If your horse was doing well and suddenly something changes about the feed, that might explain a decline in condition or performance.
Don't be intimidated by reading labels. It's not as complicated as it seems. Start with the protein and fat percentages, look at the first three ingredients, and note the mineral content. You don't need to understand every single nutrient to make informed choices.
