Quality control in horse feeding sounds like something a commercial farm worries about, but every horse owner should care about it. Bad hay makes horses sick. Moldy grain causes serious health problems. Contaminated feed causes severe colic or illness. Checking what you're feeding is preventive medicine—it stops problems before they start.

Most horse owners don't think about this. They buy hay or grain, dump it in front of their horse, and hope it's fine. When a horse gets sick from the feed, it seems like bad luck. It's not. It's preventable.

Hay issues are the most common. Hay that's been exposed to rain or stored poorly can develop mold, which is invisible to the naked eye until it gets serious. A moldy bale looks fine on the outside but is colonized by fungi inside. When a horse eats it, he inhales mold spores, which causes respiratory problems. Some molds produce toxins that cause serious liver or neurological disease. A horse can't tell you that the hay is making him sick; he just gets progressively worse.

Grain and pelleted feeds can be contaminated with molds, bacteria, or other problems if stored improperly or if the manufacturing process had issues. A horse eating contaminated grain might colic, lose condition, develop respiratory problems, or just not feel right.

The good news is that quality checking is not complicated. You can visually inspect hay, smell it, and spot obvious problems. Grain comes with batch numbers and dates; you can check these. A little attention prevents most problems.

Section 2 Nutritional Details

Mold in hay comes from moisture exposure during curing or storage. Hay that's rained on before baling, hay stored where it gets wet, or hay baled before it was fully dry can develop mold. The mold grows inside the bales where you can't see it immediately. By the time visible mold appears, the whole bale is probably colonized internally.

Different molds produce different problems. Some molds cause respiratory disease—a horse develops a chronic cough and respiratory issues from inhaling spores. Other molds produce mycotoxins, which are poisons that damage the liver, nervous system, or digestive tract. A horse eating moldy hay might have no obvious symptoms initially, just slowly declining condition, or he might develop acute illness.

Bacteria in grain usually comes from warm, damp storage conditions. Grain stored in hot, humid environments, or grain that got wet and wasn't dried, can develop bacterial growth. Bacterial contamination is less obvious than mold but causes serious problems—colic, diarrhea, systemic illness.

Insects and rodent contamination in grain happen when storage isn't secure. Grain stored in a barn with rodent access can have rodent feces and contamination. Insects can lay eggs in grain, and the larvae can spoil the feed. Feed stored properly is less vulnerable to these problems.

Rancidity is an issue with feeds high in fat. Oils in grain can go rancid over time, especially if stored in hot environments. Rancid fat tastes bad and is less nutritious, and it can upset digestion. Fat should smell fresh, not musty or off.

Foreign objects in hay—wire, plastic, nails—can cause mouth injuries, choke, colic, or puncture wounds in the mouth or digestive tract. Not all foreign objects are visible in the hay itself, but looking carefully reduces risk.

Dust and chaff in hay is normal to some degree but should be minimal. Excessive dust means the hay wasn't stored well or is old and degrading. Dusty hay causes respiratory problems in sensitive horses.

Color and smell are important indicators of quality. Good hay is a greenish color (not brown or gray, which indicates aging or moisture damage). It should smell fresh and pleasant, like grass. Musty smell indicates mold or moisture damage. Bad smell indicates serious problems.

Section 3 Feeding Guidelines

When receiving hay, do a basic visual and smell check before unloading. Pick up a bale and look at it. Is it dense and tightly baled? Good. Is it loose and fluffy? It might be under-dried or poorly baled. Smell it. Fresh hay smells like fresh grass. Musty smell is a red flag. Look at the color. It should be greenish. Dark brown indicates age or moisture problems.

Open a few bales and look inside. Pull out sections and look for visible mold—white, black, or blue fuzzy growth, or discolored areas. If you see mold in one bale, the whole load might be affected; don't buy. If the inside looks darker or discolored compared to the outside, moisture damage is likely.

Pull the hay apart and look for foreign objects—wire, plastic, nails, rocks. You won't catch everything, but catching obvious hazards matters.

Store hay properly. It needs to be dry and protected from weather. A shed or covered area is best. Hay stacked outside uncovered will get wet and start degrading. Hay stored in a barn where temperature and moisture fluctuate is at risk for mold. Good storage prevents most hay problems.

Use the oldest hay first and rotate stock. Don't feed old, degrading hay because "you paid for it." Bad hay causes problems worth far more than the cost of replacing it.

When you get grain, check the label and bag. Look for the mill date and expiration date. Old grain, especially high-fat grains, can go rancid. Don't feed grain that's expired or so old that you're unsure of quality.

Open the bag and smell it. Fresh grain should smell like grain—not musty, not sour, not off in any way. If it smells wrong, don't feed it. Open the bag fully if possible and look inside. Visible mold, discoloration, insects, or anything that looks wrong means don't use it.

Feel the grain. It should be dry, not clumpy or damp. Damp grain has developed bacterial growth. Don't feed it.

Check the ingredient list and nutrient analysis on the bag. Is this the product you meant to buy? Does the protein percentage match what the store said? Verify before feeding, especially if the bag looks different from the last time you bought.

Store grain in sealed containers, ideally in a cool, dry place. Grain in open bags in a hot, humid barn deteriorates faster. A sealed plastic bin keeps grain fresh longer and protects against rodents and insects.

Watch your horse after feeding anything new. If he immediately seems off—not interested, digestive upset, unusual behavior—something's wrong with the feed. Stop feeding it and figure out what the problem is.

If you're unsure about hay or grain quality, don't feed it. The cost of uncertainty is high; the cost of replacing questionable feed is low. When in doubt, throw it out.

Section 4 Horse Type Considerations

Young horses are especially vulnerable to mold and contaminated feed because their immune systems are developing and they're sensitive to respiratory problems from dust and mold. Be extra careful with quality for young horses. Don't feed a growing horse anything you wouldn't be confident feeding to a human.

Senior horses with weaker immune systems should get the cleanest, highest-quality feed available. An old horse struggling with a respiratory infection from moldy hay is in trouble; his immune system might not recover. Quality matters more for older horses.

Horses with respiratory issues can't tolerate dusty hay or moldy feed. A horse with heaves or chronic cough needs premium hay quality, dust-free feed, and careful storage. Poor quality feed will worsen his condition. If your horse has respiratory issues, invest in the best forage you can find.

Performance horses are sensitive to feed quality because contamination or mold can cause performance problems—respiratory issues affect oxygen uptake, mold toxins affect neurological function. A performance horse compromised by feed quality underperforms. Quality feed supports performance.

Breeding horses should be on the best quality feed available because poor quality affects fertility, milk production, or reproductive health. A mare eating moldy hay might not cycle normally or conceive well. A stallion on moldy feed might have reduced fertility. Don't compromise on quality for breeding horses.

Hard keeper horses often can't afford to lose any nutrition to poor feed quality. If their hay is moldy or feed is old and degraded, they're losing calories and nutrients they need. These horses need the best quality feed available, not the cheapest.

Easy keeper horses might tolerate poor quality better than others, but that doesn't mean you should feed them questionable hay. A horse is a horse; quality still matters.

Section 5 Potential Issues

Feeding moldy hay is the most common quality control failure. A single moldy bale in otherwise good hay is often fed anyway because "it's just one bale." But mold spores spread to other hay, and a horse exposed to moldy hay develops respiratory disease. Don't feed moldy hay, period.

Not checking grain and thinking "it's always been fine" until it's not leads to serious problems. A batch of contaminated grain causes colic or illness. When a horse gets sick from grain, the problem is usually preventable if the grain had been checked.

Assuming that because hay looks fine on the outside it's fine inside doesn't work. You need to open bales and look. Mold develops inside where you can't see it from the outside. Looking at five different bales gives you a sense of the whole load's quality.

Feeding old grain because you forgot about it, then wondering why your horse isn't doing well, happens more than it should. Old grain loses nutrients, can go rancid, and might develop growth. Check dates and rotate stock. Buy grain you'll use in a reasonable timeframe.

Missing water contamination in storage—a bale got wet and you didn't notice—causes problems. Wet hay develops mold rapidly. Wet grain develops bacterial growth. Storage matters. Protect hay and grain from weather and moisture.

Giving away or selling bad hay you wouldn't feed your own horse to someone else is ethically wrong and hurts horses you don't even own. If you have bad hay, compost it or dispose of it. Don't pass the problem on.

Ignoring signs that your horse is sick from feed—respiratory problems, colic, not eating well—and continuing to feed the same thing extends the problem. If your horse gets sick after eating something new, that's a sign to stop and investigate.

Section 6 Practical Tips

Build a relationship with your hay and grain suppliers. If you know the farmer or feed mill, you can ask about quality control procedures. Farmers who care about their hay will have good storage and handling practices. Mills with good quality control have processes in place to prevent contamination.

Buy hay locally if possible so you can inspect before buying. If you're ordering from afar, ask for pictures or get a sample bale before committing to a load.

Keep records of where hay and grain come from and batch numbers. If a horse gets sick, knowing what he ate and where it came from helps trace the problem. If a supplier has issues, knowing which batches are problematic helps.

Have your hay tested if you're concerned about quality or if you have horses with respiratory issues. A simple forage analysis costs $20-40 and tells you the nutrient content and moisture level. Knowing what you're feeding removes guesswork.

Start with small amounts of new hay or grain with your horse before committing a whole load. If a new batch causes problems, you catch it on a small scale rather than feeding a whole load of bad feed.

Invest in good storage. A hay shed or cover prevents weather damage and keeps hay clean. Sealed grain containers keep feed fresh and pest-free longer than open bags.

If you're boarding, ask questions about hay and grain storage and handling. Does the facility keep hay covered? Is grain stored properly? Are storage areas rodent-proof? Poor quality control at a boarding facility affects your horse.

Don't let cost drive you to feed questionable feed. The expense of treating feed-related illness is far higher than the cost of good hay and grain. Poor feed is false economy.

When something looks wrong, trust your instincts. If hay smells off, if grain looks discolored, if something seems wrong, don't feed it. Your horse can't make decisions about feed safety; you have to do it for him.
