Protein is the building block for muscle, hair, hooves, skin, and pretty much every structure in a horse's body. Without adequate protein, a horse literally can't build or maintain these things. You can see protein deficiency in a horse's appearance—rough coat, weak hooves, poor muscle tone, low body condition—and you can see it in his energy and performance too. A protein-deficient horse feels tired and doesn't recover well from work.
Here's the thing about protein deficiency: it's usually not the feed itself that's the problem. It's that the feed you're giving him doesn't meet what he actually needs. A horse eating straight grass hay might be getting fed something, but if that hay is poor quality and he's a working horse or a young horse or just a hard keeper, the amount of protein in that hay isn't enough. He's being fed, but he's not being fed right.
The effects of protein deficiency build slowly. You don't see a dramatic collapse. You see a horse that loses muscle tone gradually, whose coat gets dull and rough, whose hooves don't grow well, who seems tired. People sometimes mistake these signs for laziness or just age, when the real problem is that the horse isn't getting fed enough protein to maintain his body.
Young horses are particularly vulnerable to protein deficiency because they're building muscle and bone while also trying to grow. A growing horse that doesn't get adequate protein has poor bone development, weak joints, and stunted muscles. Some of the joint and bone problems that show up when a young horse starts working actually started with poor protein nutrition during his growth phase.
Working horses need more protein than idle horses because work tears down muscle, and protein rebuilds it. A horse doing regular work on protein-deficient feed loses muscle condition over time, even if he's eating plenty of calories. He'll fill out if you only look at overall weight, but his actual muscle tone decreases.

Section 2 Nutritional Details
Protein is made up of amino acids, and horses need all of them for different functions. Some amino acids are essential—the horse's body can't make them, so they have to come from food. Others are nonessential because the horse's body can synthesize them if it has the raw materials. The thing about protein quality is that it's not just about how much protein a feed has; it's about which amino acids are in it. A horse can eat 10 percent protein in grass hay and be protein deficient because grass hay is low in lysine, one of the essential amino acids.
An adult horse at rest needs about 8 to 10 percent protein in his total diet. A working horse needs 10 to 12 percent. A young growing horse needs 12 to 14 percent. A lactating mare needs 14 to 16 percent. These aren't massive numbers, but most straight-hay diets fall short, especially if the hay is poor quality or the horse falls into a category that needs more than a resting adult.
Protein builds muscle, obviously, but it also builds hooves, hair, skin, enzymes, and hormones. When you cut protein, all of these systems suffer. Hooves grow poorly and are softer and weaker. Hair becomes dull and rough. Skin becomes flaky or thin. Muscle wasting happens. It's not just one symptom; it's a cascade of problems because protein is involved in almost every body system.
Lysine is the amino acid that gets most attention because it's often the limiting factor in equine diets. If your feed is low in lysine, you can hit all the protein percentages you want and still not have enough usable protein for building muscle. Legume hays like alfalfa are higher in lysine than grass hays. Quality grains usually have added minerals and amino acids specifically to balance for lysine. Straight grass hay is often short on lysine.
The digestibility of the protein matters too. A horse might eat a feed that has adequate protein on paper, but if that protein isn't digestible—if the horse's gut can't break it down and absorb it—it doesn't help. Young horses and mares in late pregnancy need more digestible protein because their bodies are building rapidly. Old horses with poor digestion might need higher protein because they don't absorb as much from what they eat.
When a horse is protein deficient, his body starts breaking down existing muscle to get the amino acids he needs for essential functions. He's cannibalizing himself. This is why a protein-deficient horse loses muscle but might not look obviously thin initially—his body is just redistributing protein from muscle to maintain organs and other critical functions.
Amino acid profile is why supplementing with a quality concentrate or grain makes a difference over hay alone. The grain can be formulated to provide the amino acids that the hay is short on, particularly lysine. It's not just calories; it's nutritional balance.
Section 3 Feeding Guidelines
Start by honestly evaluating what your horse is eating. If he's on straight grass hay and getting nothing else, he's almost certainly protein deficient unless he's a resting adult horse and that hay is exceptional quality. For any other situation—young horses, working horses, mares in late pregnancy or lactation, hard keepers—straight grass hay doesn't meet protein needs.
Add grain or a pelleted concentrate to provide additional protein. The amount depends on what he needs and what the hay provides, but a working horse on average-quality grass hay usually needs three to five pounds of a quality grain daily to meet protein needs. That grain should be formulated for horses and should provide at least 10 to 12 percent protein with good amino acid balance. A straight oat grain won't cut it; you need something with added minerals and amino acids.
Alternatively or additionally, alfalfa hay is your friend if your horse will eat it. Alfalfa is about 15 to 18 percent protein and is higher in lysine than grass hay. Horses that won't eat straight alfalfa sometimes eat alfalfa-grass mixes. If your horse is protein deficient and you can include alfalfa in his diet, his protein status improves dramatically without needing as much additional grain. Some operations use a mix of grass hay and alfalfa, and that often solves the protein problem better than either one alone.
For young horses, feeding a grain formulated for growth is critical. These products have adequate protein levels and amino acids balanced for development. Don't try to feed a young horse on straight hay and hope for the best. Young horses build permanent bone and muscle during their growth phase, and cutting corners on nutrition has consequences he carries for life.
For working horses, maintain whatever diet you're feeding and monitor his muscle condition and coat. If he's losing muscle despite the work not being excessive, his protein intake probably isn't adequate. Add grain or more alfalfa. The goal is that he should maintain good muscle tone and his coat should be shiny.
For hard keepers, protein is part of the solution. A hard keeper needs more calories and also more protein because he needs muscle to support his weight. Feed him a higher-protein concentrate, use alfalfa if possible, and don't try to get by on cheap hay. Talk to your vet or grain store about a ration balancer or high-protein grain formulated for hard keepers.
For mares in late pregnancy or lactation, boost protein starting in the final months of pregnancy and keeping it high through lactation. A grain formulated for mares or a ration balancer formulated for pregnancy and lactation handles this well.
Change feed gradually. If you switch from grass hay alone to hay plus grain, add the grain slowly over a week or two so his digestion adjusts. The same if you're changing the type of hay or the amount of grain.
Monitor his response. After two or three weeks of feeding a more protein-adequate diet, look for improvement in coat shine, muscle tone, and energy. If you're still seeing signs of deficiency, either the feed doesn't have what you think it does, or his needs are higher than normal—that's a conversation for your vet or grain store nutritionist.
Section 4 Horse Type Considerations
Young horses cannot be protein deficient without consequences. A yearling or two-year-old that's not getting adequate protein has weak bones, poor muscle development, and stunted growth that carries forward for life. If you're raising young stock, invest in quality nutrition now because inadequate feeding during growth shows up as permanent problems later.
Working horses need more protein than idle horses, but it's not dramatically more. A horse doing light to moderate work needs 10 to 12 percent protein. A horse doing intense training or competition might benefit from 12 to 14 percent. The work breaks down muscle; protein rebuilds it. A horse on inadequate protein for his workload gradually loses muscle condition.
Senior horses sometimes have higher protein needs because their digestion is less efficient and they might absorb less protein from their feed. An older horse that's losing muscle despite eating well might actually be protein deficient because his aging gut isn't pulling protein from the feed as effectively as a younger horse's would. Adding a high-quality grain or legume hay helps senior horses maintain muscle as they age.
Hard keepers are often protein deficient partly by circumstance and partly because their metabolism is fast. These horses need protein-rich feed to maintain any condition. Alfalfa and quality grain are necessities for hard keepers, not luxuries. Trying to manage a hard keeper on straight grass hay is a losing battle; you'll fight continuously to keep him in any kind of condition.
Mares in pregnancy and lactation need substantially more protein than non-pregnant mares. A pregnant mare needs adequate protein in the final months; a lactating mare needs high protein for milk production. These are non-negotiable. Shortchange a mare on protein and her foal either doesn't develop well or she doesn't produce enough milk. It's a critical time nutritionally.
Breeding stallions sometimes benefit from higher protein than other horses, especially during breeding season. The energy demand is high, and protein supports the reproductive system. Talk to your vet or grain store about whether your stallion needs supplemental protein during breeding season.
Section 5 Potential Issues
Long-term protein deficiency causes damage that doesn't immediately reverse. A young horse that's protein deficient during his growth phase has permanently weaker bones even after you improve his nutrition as an adult. The damage is done. This is why getting nutrition right during growth is so important.
A protein-deficient horse loses muscle, which affects his athletic ability and strength. Even after you fix the nutrition, rebuilding muscle takes time. A horse that's been deficient for months needs weeks or months of good nutrition to restore his muscle tone and performance.
Poor hooves are a common consequence of protein deficiency. Hooves are partly made of protein, and they don't grow well without adequate protein. A horse that's been protein deficient has weak, flaky hooves that are susceptible to cracks and disease. Again, once this develops, it takes months of good nutrition and good hoof care to grow out healthy hooves.
Immune function suffers with protein deficiency. Proteins are involved in antibody production and immune cell function. A protein-deficient horse is more susceptible to illness and infection. You might notice he gets sick more easily or doesn't recover as well from colds or other infections.
Lactating mares that are protein deficient produce less milk or milk of poorer quality. The foal doesn't get adequate nutrition, growth suffers, and the foal might start life at a disadvantage. This matters even if the foal looks okay at birth; the first months of his life are when he's setting up his entire body's potential.
Overfeeding protein is not common in horses, but it's worth mentioning. Excess protein is excreted in urine, which increases urine output and water requirements. A horse on excessively high protein needs more water. This isn't dangerous, but it's inefficient and potentially stressful. You don't need to feed 20 percent protein to a resting adult horse; 8 to 10 percent is fine.
Section 6 Practical Tips
Look at your horse's coat and muscle tone monthly. A shiny, supple coat and visible muscle definition mean protein intake is adequate. A dull, rough coat and poor muscle tone despite adequate calories suggest protein deficiency. These are your visual indicators that something's wrong.
If you can't feel your horse's ribs easily but his muscle tone is poor, he might be getting adequate calories but not adequate protein. His body is filling out with fat while muscles waste. This is the classic hard keeper or working horse on inadequate protein.
Hooves tell a story about long-term nutrition. If your horse has weak, crumbly, or flaky hooves, protein deficiency is one possible cause. Check with your vet to rule out other issues, but if his hooves are bad and his nutrition hasn't been great, fix the nutrition and see if hooves improve.
Talk to your vet or the nutritionist at your grain store if you're unsure whether your horse's protein intake is adequate. They can look at what you're feeding and whether it matches his needs. Grain store employees usually know their products and can help you pick something appropriate.
If you switch to a higher-protein diet, expect improvements to take weeks, not days. Coat quality starts improving in two to three weeks. Muscle takes longer—four to eight weeks of good nutrition to see real improvement. Hooves take months because they grow slowly. Be patient and consistent.
Being cheap with nutrition usually costs you more in the long run. A horse fed on poor-quality hay alone might be cheaper to feed than one on hay plus grain, but the problems you deal with—poor hooves, chronic illness, bad muscle condition—cost money and create problems. Spending an extra twenty or thirty dollars a month on better nutrition usually pays for itself in better health and performance.
Write down what you're feeding and when you see improvements. This helps you know whether what you changed actually helped and how long it took. It also gives your vet information if problems develop later.
