This is reliable once you're at this stage, but it's not as early as ultrasound.
By three weeks post-ovulation, pregnancy is usually well-established. The embryo is settling in and the pregnancy hormones are strong. The mare's cycle has stopped - she's no longer showing heat signs. To a veterinarian, the pregnancy is becoming obvious. If you palpate the mare at this point and feel pregnancy, it's very likely to be real.
Over the next weeks and months, the pregnancy progresses. The foal develops. The mare's body changes - her abdomen enlarges, her nipples might start to relax and fill, her temperament might change. These physical changes become increasingly obvious as pregnancy advances. By six months, a mare looks obviously pregnant to anyone. By nine months, it's unmistakable.
Hormone testing can also confirm pregnancy. A blood test can detect pregnancy hormones, particularly eCG (equine chorionic gonadotropin) which is produced around days 40 to 120 of pregnancy. This is useful for mares where ultrasound or palpation might be inconclusive, though it's more expensive than other methods.
Fetal viability can be assessed once pregnancy is established. After confirming that pregnancy exists, ultrasound can monitor whether the foal is developing normally. Early ultrasound can detect a heartbeat, showing that the embryo is viable. Later ultrasounds assess foal size and development to ensure everything is progressing normally.
Section 3 Care And Management
Once a mare is confirmed pregnant, managing the pregnancy appropriately becomes important. Different breeders take different approaches to managing pregnancy, but the goal is the same - support the mare and the developing foal through eleven months of gestation.
Early pregnancy requires minimal management changes. A mare in early pregnancy - first few months - doesn't need dramatically different treatment than when not pregnant. She can be ridden or worked lightly. She eats normally. Stress can affect early pregnancies, so minimizing unnecessary stress is good practice, but life goes on.
As pregnancy advances, management changes. By the third trimester, the foal is large and the mare's center of gravity is shifting. Hard work or jumping becomes inappropriate. Toxemia - a buildup of toxic substances in the mare's bloodstream - can occur late in pregnancy, especially in mares that are overweight. This is serious and can be life-threatening to both mare and foal.

If you're comfortable waiting to observe whether the mare cycles back into heat, you can save the cost of early confirmation. Either approach is valid depending on your situation.
Understand that pregnancy progress changes management over time. A mare at four weeks pregnant doesn't need the same management adjustments as one at nine months pregnant. Managing dynamically based on pregnancy stage is more appropriate than static management throughout.
Finally, remember that confirmation and monitoring give you information to make good decisions about the mare's care.
