The reason ovulation timing matters is that a stallion's sperm can survive in the mare's reproductive tract for several days, but the egg's window is narrow. This means you don't necessarily need to breed right at ovulation, but you do need to have sperm present when the egg is released. Get the timing slightly wrong - breed a day too early or a day too late - and you miss. This is why mares that seem healthy can have lower conception rates than they should. It's not always a fertility problem; it's often a timing problem.
Understanding ovulation requires understanding the estrous cycle as a whole. Mares are seasonal breeders, which means they have cycles during certain times of the year and not others. In the Northern Hemisphere, mares typically start cycling in the spring as days get longer, cycle regularly through summer and fall, and then go dormant in the winter. This isn't absolute - individual mares vary, and latitude matters too - but the general pattern is consistent.
Within a cycle, a mare goes through different phases. There's the follicular phase, when the ovary is building up a follicle - essentially preparing an egg to be released. During this phase, the mare usually shows signs of being in heat: she's friendly to stallions, she might stand and urinate when mares smell her, she's more affectionate or responsive than usual. Then there's the luteal phase, after ovulation, when the mare's not interested in breeding and her hormones are focused on supporting a potential pregnancy.
The follicular phase typically lasts five to seven days, though it can be shorter or longer. Ovulation happens at the end of the follicular phase, usually triggered by a surge of the hormone LH. Then the cycle starts over. All of this has variation depending on the individual mare, the season, her age, and other factors. Understanding these patterns is the foundation for predicting ovulation.
Section 2 The Process
The estrous cycle starts the first day of visible heat - when the mare first starts showing behavioral signs of being in estrus. You'll notice a mare in heat is more affectionate than normal, might position her rear toward the stallion or toward other mares, and if you clean her vulva, she might relax it noticeably. Some mares are obvious about being in heat - very flirty and responsive. Others are subtle. Once you learn your individual mare's signs, you'll recognize the pattern.
During the first few days of the follicular phase, the mare is definitely in heat, and a follicle is developing on her ovary. If you palpate her ovaries - feel them through the rectal wall - you can feel the developing follicle. It starts small and gradually grows larger. As it grows, it produces estrogen, which is what drives the behavioral signs. A follicle that's around 20-30mm in diameter is getting close to ovulating. A follicle that's 35-40mm is very close.
As the follicle approaches ovulation, it gets larger and increasingly close to the surface of the ovary. At some point - usually when the follicle is 35-45mm - the mare's LH hormone surges. This LH surge triggers ovulation about 24 to 48 hours later. The egg is released into the oviduct. This is the moment everything is pointed toward.
When the egg is released, the follicle collapses and the mare's hormones shift. Progesterone starts to rise because the tissue where the egg came from - the corpus luteum - starts producing it. Progesterone tells the mare's body, "If there's a pregnancy, support it." It also shuts down the behavioral signs of heat. Within a day or two of ovulation, the mare is no longer showing heat signs. She's no longer interested in the stallion. She's in what's called diestrus or the luteal phase.
If the egg got fertilized by a sperm, the developing embryo makes its way down the oviduct and into the uterus over the next several days. By about day six or seven after ovulation, the embryo reaches the uterus and starts establishing itself. If no fertilization happened, the mare's body recognizes this after a certain amount of time and progesterone drops. When progesterone drops, the mare cycles back into heat. Usually this happens around 14 to 21 days after the ovulation that didn't result in pregnancy. Then the whole process starts over.
Throughout this entire cycle, the mare's behaviors and physical signs are changing. In heat, she's receptive. Out of heat, she's not. You can observe these signs and have a pretty good sense of where she is in her cycle. But observation alone isn't precise enough for reliable breeding. This is where additional tools come in.
Section 3 Care And Management
The simplest way to assess ovulation timing is by watching the mare's behavioral signs and understanding her pattern. Every mare has a cycle, and most mares' cycles are reasonably predictable once you know that mare. You learn when she comes into heat, how long she usually stays in heat, and approximately when she ovulates. Some mares are in heat for five days and ovulate near the end. Others are in heat for seven days. Some are in heat for only three days. Once you know your mare's pattern, you can predict fairly accurately when she'll ovulate relative to when you first notice her in heat.
Palpation of the ovary is a hands-on way to monitor follicle development. A veterinarian - or someone trained by a veterinarian - can feel the mare's ovaries through the rectal wall and assess follicle size and consistency. This gives direct information about what's happening. A follicle that feels soft and large is different from one that's firm and small. This information helps you time breeding more precisely.
Ultrasound is the gold standard for ovulation monitoring. A veterinarian can ultrasound the ovaries and see the follicles developing on the screen. You can measure their size precisely and track how they're growing. This removes guesswork. You know exactly how big the follicles are, which ones are likely to ovulate, and when ovulation is likely to happen. For serious breeders, especially those with valuable mares or stallions that have limited breeding opportunities, ultrasound monitoring is worth the cost.
With ultrasound monitoring, a typical protocol is to start checking the mare when she comes into heat. The vet ultrasounds her ovaries every other day or daily, watching the follicles grow. When a dominant follicle reaches a certain size - usually 35-45mm depending on the mare - and the vet detects an LH surge or sees signs that ovulation is imminent, the mare is bred. For live cover, the mare might be brought to the stallion immediately. For artificial insemination, semen is thawed or collected and inseminated into the mare at the optimal time.
If you're using artificial insemination, the timing becomes even more critical because you're not getting multiple natural matings. A single AI at the right time is usually sufficient. Too early and the sperm might die before the egg arrives. Too late and the egg might have already degenerated.
Mares sometimes have follicles that develop but don't ovulate - they just persist or regress without releasing an egg. This is called anovulation. Knowing this can happen prevents wasting time and expense breeding a mare that's not actually going to ovulate. If a follicle stays large but the mare goes out of heat without ovulating, something's wrong and the vet needs to know.
Some mares benefit from hormonal support to ensure ovulation. Administering HCG or GnRH can trigger ovulation, allowing you to time insemination more precisely. This is especially useful in mares that are prone to ovulating very late in their heat period or in situations where precise timing is essential.
Management also includes understanding that not every cycle will be perfect. Some mares have irregular cycles. Some have shorter follicular phases one month and longer ones the next. Some have double ovulations - releasing two eggs. Understanding your mare's individual patterns helps you manage breeding more effectively. If your mare double-ovulates regularly, you adjust your strategy. If she has a pattern of late ovulation, you know to breed earlier than you would with other mares.
Section 4 Potential Complications
One of the most common complications is anovulatory cycles - when a mare comes into heat but doesn't ovulate. This happens more commonly in mares early or late in the breeding season, in mares with certain health conditions, or sometimes just randomly. The mare shows heat signs, you breed her, and nothing happens because there was no egg to fertilize. Repeated cycles of this can be frustrating and expensive. Ultrasound monitoring helps identify anovulatory cycles so you don't waste time and breeding opportunities.
Double ovulations are more common than people realize. Some mares ovulate two eggs regularly. If you don't know this, you might think your mare is less fertile than she actually is - both eggs get fertilized and you get a pregnancy that might result in twins. Knowing whether your mare double-ovulates helps you manage breeding expectations.
Twin pregnancies are a serious complication that relates to ovulation and breeding management. Horses rarely successfully carry twins to term. If a mare conceives twins, you usually end up losing one or both foals, or having to manually reduce one of them early in pregnancy. Understanding double ovulation risk and managing it - sometimes by breeding only once, or by spacing matings to reduce the chance of both eggs getting fertilized - is part of modern breeding management.
Premature ovulation can happen if a mare is stressed or handled roughly while carrying a large follicle. You think the mare has another day or two before ovulation, then she ovulates early and the egg deteriorates before breeding can happen. Handling mares that are close to ovulation gently is part of preventing this.
Persistent follicles - where a follicle develops but doesn't ovulate and doesn't regress - can create situations where a mare stays in heat unusually long. These sometimes resolve on their own, but sometimes require veterinary intervention.
Cystic ovaries are a condition where follicles develop abnormally and the mare doesn't cycle normally. She might be in continuous heat or have a very disrupted cycle. This can be a management or nutritional problem, or sometimes a metabolic issue. Diagnosing cystic ovaries usually requires ultrasound and might require treatment.
Age affects ovulation patterns. Older mares sometimes have less predictable cycles. Young mares might have irregular cycles before settling into a pattern. Understanding that your mare's pattern might change with age helps you adjust your breeding management.
Environmental factors - changes in light, stress, poor nutrition - can affect ovulation timing. A mare that has an irregular cycle might just need better conditions. One that's being transported a lot or dealing with stress might have disrupted cycles until the stress resolves.
Misses due to ovulation timing are more common than most people realize. You breed at what seems like the right time, the mare doesn't conceive, and you assume it's a fertility problem. Often it's just timing. Learning to time more precisely reduces misses significantly.

A veterinarian is valuable for establishing your mare's ovulation pattern and learning her individual cycles. The vet can teach you to recognize her heat signs and can assess her overall reproductive health. Ultrasound monitoring is something a reproduction veterinarian does regularly. If you're serious about breeding, getting the vet involved for ultrasound monitoring of a cycle is worth the investment. The information is precise and removes guesswork. For mares with known ovulation problems or for valuable breeding animals, ultrasound monitoring should be standard.
Veterinarians can diagnose issues like anovulation, cystic ovaries, or persistent follicles. Once diagnosed, they can recommend management changes or treatments. Some ovulation problems are nutritional - a mare on better feed cycles more regularly. Some are hormonal or health-related and require veterinary treatment.
If you're using artificial insemination, a reproduction vet is essential. They collect or evaluate semen, time insemination precisely based on ovulation monitoring, and manage the entire process. The timing and technique matter enormously for AI success, and vets do this regularly.
For problem mares - ones that don't seem to be breeding successfully despite apparently being healthy - a veterinary evaluation is important. Sometimes there's an underlying issue affecting ovulation or fertilization that needs to be identified and managed. Sometimes it's just management, but you need professional input to figure out which.
Cost considerations for veterinary involvement range from one or two ultrasound exams during a breeding season to more intensive monitoring. Even limited vet involvement gives you information that improves your results.
Section 6 Key Considerations
The biggest consideration is that ovulation timing is the difference between successful breeding and repeated misses. Understanding the concept is useful, but understanding your individual mare's pattern is essential. Every mare is different, and learning your mare's cycle gives you power in managing her breeding.
Recognize that behavioral observation alone has limits. You can be pretty good at predicting when your mare is close to ovulating just by watching her, but you'll be more accurate if you also use palpation or ultrasound. For valuable mares, the information is worth getting.
Understand that successful breeding is a numbers game. If you time breeding to the general part of her cycle but not precisely, you might miss occasionally. Get more precise with timing, and your conception rate goes up significantly. This matters more if you only get one or two breeding opportunities per cycle.
Recognize individual variation. Your mare's cycle might not match the typical 21-day pattern. She might cycle shorter or longer. She might ovulate earlier or later in her heat period than the average mare. Once you know her pattern, you can work with it instead of assuming she'll follow a textbook cycle.
Finally, remember that while timing is important, it's not the only factor in successful breeding. Mare health, stallion fertility, and overall management matter too. But getting the timing right removes one major source of breeding failure, which is worth the effort and investment.
