This happens partly through improved skin health and partly through better nutrient absorption. Some horses also show improved hoof quality and faster hoof growth when omega-3 supplemented. Additionally, horses on omega-3 supplements often show improved inflammation markers and sometimes less joint stiffness, though this varies by individual. Performance horses sometimes feel more supple and recover better from work.
The most straightforward form of omega-3 supplementation is flaxseed, which is high in omega-3 fatty acids. Other options include fish oil or algae-based supplements, though these are less common in horse feeding. Flaxseed ground or milled is the easiest form for horses to digest and assimilate. Whole flaxseed passes through mostly undigested, so ground or milled is important. Most flaxseed supplements are convenient, shelf-stable, and affordable compared to other supplements. Understanding how to use omega-3 supplements effectively helps you get the best value and results.
Section 2 Nutritional Details
Let's talk about what these fatty acids actually are and why they matter. Fatty acids are long-chain molecules made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. The names omega-3 and omega-6 refer to the position of a particular double bond in the carbon chain. Omega-3 and omega-6 are unsaturated fatty acids, meaning they have at least one double bond. This structural difference is what makes them functionally different in the body, even though they're both "essential" fatty acids that horses need.
Omega-3 fatty acids in equine nutrition primarily come from plants, particularly flaxseed, but also from fresh forage. Alpha-linolenic acid is the main plant-based omega-3. When a horse consumes alpha-linolenic acid, their body can convert some of it into longer-chain omega-3 fatty acids like EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Flaxseed also contains lignans, compounds with potential antioxidant properties. The other components of flaxseed contribute to nutrition too, not just the omega-3, which is why flaxseed is valuable beyond just the fatty acid content.
Fish oil and algae oils are more concentrated sources of the longer-chain omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. These don't require conversion the way plant-based omega-3 does, which is why some people prefer them. However, they're less stable, more expensive, and smell pretty strongly, which some horses dislike. For most horse owners, flaxseed is practical and effective. If using fish oil, keep it sealed, stored cool, and don't buy more than you'll use in a couple months because oxidation degrades the fatty acids.
Horses naturally produce some of their own protective compounds, including those derived from fatty acid metabolism. Adequate omega-3 supplementation improves these natural protective mechanisms. Additionally, omega-3 fatty acids improve cell membrane flexibility and function throughout the body, which has cascading positive effects on everything from nutrient absorption to nerve function.
Section 3 Feeding Guidelines
A basic starting dosage for ground flaxseed supplementation is about one cup daily for a thousand-pound horse. This works out to around half a pound. Some horses need a bit less, some benefit from more, but one cup is a reasonable baseline. You mix it into grain or pellets so it's easy to feed. Horses readily eat ground flaxseed because it has a pleasant, nutty flavor and mixes well with most feeds. Some horses even prefer it, actually seeking it out in the grain tub.
You can feed flaxseed daily indefinitely. Unlike some supplements that are intended as short-term treatments, omega-3 supplementation is ongoing. The benefits build over time and decline if you stop supplementing. For this reason, omega-3 is best thought of as part of regular feeding, not a treatment. You feed it consistently, the same way you feed grain or hay.
Ground flaxseed storage matters more than you might think. The fats are vulnerable to oxidation, especially if exposed to heat or light. Store ground flaxseed in a cool, dry place in a sealed container. Some people refrigerate or freeze it, which is excellent for long-term storage. Easy keeper horses don't need additional calories from fat supplementation necessarily, but they can still benefit from the omega-3 balance that flaxseed provides. An easy keeper can be supplemented with flaxseed without weight gain concerns, as the amount fed is small relative to total diet. The benefits to coat quality and general health are worthwhile regardless of how easily the horse maintains weight.
Hard keeper horses benefit from flaxseed supplementation particularly because of the fat content. Flaxseed provides additional calories, which hard keepers need, while simultaneously improving nutritional balance. This makes flaxseed an excellent choice for hard keepers because it's a useful calorie source that also provides anti-inflammatory benefits. A hard keeper might actually need the extra calories from flaxseed.
Performance horses benefit from omega-3 supplementation because of the anti-inflammatory effects. Horses in training experience muscle soreness and training stress. Adequate omega-3 helps manage that inflammation and supports recovery. Some trainers notice that horses supplemented with omega-3 recover better from hard work and feel more supple in training. Additionally, omega-3 supports joint health, which is important for performance horses carrying athletes and doing athletic work.
Senior horses can benefit significantly from omega-3 supplementation, particularly those with age-related stiffness or arthritis. The anti-inflammatory effects can improve mobility and comfort. Additionally, omega-3 supports cognitive function and immune health, both of which tend to decline with age. A senior horse supplemented with omega-3 often looks and moves better than one without supplementation.
Special needs horses with inflammatory conditions, joint problems, or immune challenges benefit from omega-3 supplementation. Horses recovering from illness sometimes recover better with anti-inflammatory support. A horse with chronic cough sometimes improves with omega-3 supplementation. A horse with arthritis or joint problems often moves better with omega-3 support. These aren't guaranteed fixes, but the anti-inflammatory effects can be genuinely helpful.
Section 5 Potential Issues
Rancid flaxseed is the main issue with supplementation. Oxidized flaxseed loses its nutritional value and might have an off-flavor that horses dislike. If your flaxseed smells musty or off, or if your horse suddenly refuses supplement they previously ate, the flaxseed might be oxidized. Don't feed rancid flaxseed. Buy fresh, store properly, and replace regularly.
Too much fat from multiple fat supplements can cause problems. If you're feeding flaxseed plus oil supplements plus other high-fat sources, you might be overdoing fat intake. Omega-3 supplementation doesn't fix poor diet or other nutritional problems. If a horse is overall nutritionally deficient, omega-3 supplementation helps but doesn't solve the root problem. You need quality forage, adequate minerals, and appropriate grain or supplements for your horse's needs, plus omega-3 supplementation. The supplement works best as part of a complete feeding program.
Results from omega-3 supplementation take time. You're not going to see coat improvement in a week. Typical timeline for noticeable coat improvement is four to eight weeks. Joint-related improvements might take longer. Some people give up on supplementation too quickly expecting immediate results. Commit to at least a couple months of supplementation before deciding whether it's worth continuing.

Start with ground flaxseed from a reputable supplier. Make sure it's explicitly labeled as ground or milled, not whole. Whole flaxseed passes through horses largely undigested. Common mistakes include buying in bulk without considering storage, resulting in old, oxidized flaxseed that's lost its potency. Another mistake is switching brands and forgetting that different suppliers might have different particle sizes or products. Sometimes a horse rejects a new brand even though it's flaxseed, just because it smells or feels different. Consistency helps. Another mistake is assuming omega-3 supplementation is optional. It's not required, but the benefits are real and the cost is minimal, making it worth doing.
If you want to maximize the anti-inflammatory benefits, combine omega-3 supplementation with reduced omega-6 if possible. This means choosing oats and hay over corn when you have options. You don't have to eliminate corn or grains, just be aware that reducing omega-6 sources and increasing omega-3 supplementation creates the best balance. However, omega-3 supplementation alone still makes a difference even if you don't change the rest of the diet.
Track your horse's coat quality, hoof condition, and how they feel under saddle as you supplement with omega-3. These subjective measures are your best indicators of whether supplementation is working. If you don't notice improvements after a couple months, the dosage might be too low or your horse might just not respond significantly to supplementation. Not every horse shows dramatic improvement, but most show at least some benefit.
