This is when you might add grain to her routine if she wasn't getting any, or increase the amount if she was getting some.

Month nine is when everything shifts. The foal is now growing at a rate where it's actually consuming significant nutrients from the mare's bloodstream. The foal's skeleton is developing and needs calcium and phosphorus in the right ratio. Its organs are finalizing. Its nervous system is developing. The mare's nutritional demands increase substantially. This is when most mares need supplemental feeding beyond just pasture or hay.

In those final months, you're watching the mare's body condition carefully. She should look pregnant - definitely rounder - but she shouldn't look fat. A mare that gets too fat during pregnancy is at higher risk for metabolic problems and foaling complications. A mare that's too thin going into foaling is going to have a harder time producing milk and recovering from the effort of birth. You're aiming for that middle ground where she's got good energy reserves but isn't carrying excess weight.

During this time, the quality of what she's eating matters more than just the quantity. A mare eating poor-quality hay might be eating a lot but not actually getting the nutrients she needs. A mare on good pasture during growing season might get most of what she needs from grass alone. A mare being fed quality hay plus supplemental grain is probably getting what the foal needs, assuming the grain is formulated for pregnant mares. Each situation is different, which is why observation matters so much.

Section 3 Care And Management

The foundation of feeding a pregnant mare is good quality forage. Whether that's pasture or hay, it needs to be clean, not moldy, and ideally not so coarse that the mare has trouble eating it. A mare that's struggling to chew because her hay is stemmy isn't going to eat enough of it to meet her needs. If you're feeding hay, aim for grass hay that's been stored properly. Legume hay like alfalfa is higher in calcium and protein, which is useful, but some mares get too much calcium from pure alfalfa and their overall mineral balance gets thrown off. Many breeders feed a mix - mostly grass hay with some alfalfa for the extra nutrition without overdoing the calcium.

The point is that the grain is actually providing nutrition, not just filling the mare's belly.

Water is often overlooked but it's absolutely crucial. A pregnant mare needs access to clean water at all times. In winter, water needs to be unfrozen and warm enough that the mare is willing to drink it. A mare that's not drinking enough is more prone to colic, and colic in a pregnant mare is a serious emergency. You might need to leave buckets out in addition to troughs, or heat water, or do whatever it takes to encourage drinking.

Mineral supplementation is the part where people either overdo it or not do it at all. If you're feeding a good quality pregnant mare grain and good hay, you're probably getting most minerals covered. But some situations call for additional minerals. A mare on poor-quality hay might need a mineral supplement. A mare on alfalfa might need additional phosphorus to balance the calcium. The best approach is getting your hay tested if you're uncertain, or talking to a veterinarian about what your specific mare needs in your specific situation.

Vitamins matter less if the mare is getting good forage, but once you're feeding grain, the vitamin levels in that grain matter. Most quality pregnant mare grains include adequate vitamin E and other essential vitamins. If you're making your own grain mix or feeding basic oats and barley, you might need to add a vitamin supplement.

Body condition scoring is your most important management tool. Learn to feel the mare's ribs, see how her hip bones look, check how the fat sits along her crest. Throughout pregnancy, aim for a body condition score of 5-6 out of 9, with 9 being obese. This gives the mare energy reserves without the metabolic stress of being too fat. As you approach foaling, you're adjusting feed based on how the mare looks and feels, not on some arbitrary schedule. A mare that's looking thin as you get close to foaling might need more grain. One that's getting fat might need less. You're the one making decisions based on what you see and feel.

Management around foaling is part of the nutritional picture too. A mare that's stressed is less likely to eat well. A mare that doesn't have easy access to her feed is going to miss meals. Having the mare in a place where she feels secure and where her feed is easy to access actually impacts how much nutrition she takes in.

Section 4 Potential Complications

Metabolic problems in pregnant mares are serious. A mare that's underfed going into the final months can develop issues where her body breaks down its own tissue for energy. This weakens the mare and can lead to foaling complications. A mare that's overfed becomes obese and is at risk for things like equine metabolic syndrome, which can trigger premature foaling or foaling complications.

Dystocia - difficult foaling - is more likely in mares that are either very fat or very thin. A mare that's carrying excess weight has a harder time moving through labor. A mare that's thin has less energy reserves to push the foal out. The nutritional state of the mare going into foaling actually affects how smoothly the foaling goes.

An underfed mare going into lactation is going to produce thin milk without adequate nutrition for the foal. If the foal isn't getting rich enough milk, it doesn't grow properly, doesn't have the energy it needs, and might not get the antibodies and other protective elements from the mare's colostrum. This becomes a cascade where one nutritional problem leads to another.

Copper and other mineral deficiencies during pregnancy can lead to foals born with developmental orthopedic disease - basically, bones and joints that don't develop correctly. The foal might be born with angular limb deformities or have other skeletal problems that could have been prevented with proper mare nutrition. This is why mineral balance matters, not just total mineral intake.

Some mares develop placentitis - infection of the placenta - during pregnancy, which can lead to foal loss or a foal born in poor condition. Nutrition doesn't directly prevent this, but a mare in good nutritional status has better immune function and is more able to fight off infections than a mare that's undernourished.

Gestational diabetes can occur in mares, especially older ones or those with metabolic issues. This is more likely in mares that are overfed and overweight. A mare with gestational diabetes might produce a foal that's oversized and weak, or might have foaling complications.

Retained placenta is more common in mares that have had nutritional stress during pregnancy. The mechanisms aren't entirely clear, but the correlation is consistent - better-nourished mares are less likely to retain the placenta after foaling.

Section 5 Professional Involvement

A veterinarian can evaluate your mare's body condition and give you specific recommendations for what and how much to feed. If your mare has any health issues - metabolic problems, previous foaling difficulties, current medications - a vet's input on nutrition is valuable. They might recommend specific supplements or grain brands based on what they know about your situation.

Hay testing is something a veterinarian can arrange or interpret. Knowing the nutrient content of the hay you're actually feeding takes guesswork out of the equation. If your hay is low in certain minerals, you know exactly what to supplement. If your hay is surprisingly rich, you can adjust grain accordingly. As you approach foaling, a vet visit to assess the mare's readiness is standard care. Part of that assessment includes evaluating whether the mare is in good enough nutritional condition to foal and nurse. If there are concerns, the vet might recommend adjustments in the final weeks of pregnancy.

Section 6 Key Considerations

The biggest consideration is that feeding a pregnant mare is an investment in the foal you're going to get. A poorly nourished foal born to an underfed mare is going to start life behind - weaker, more susceptible to disease, possibly with developmental issues that could have been prevented. The cost of good nutrition during those nine months is tiny compared to dealing with problems in the foal that result from poor nutrition.

Understand that you don't need to overfeed. Many breeders think pregnant mares need huge amounts of grain. They don't. They need the right kinds of nutrition in appropriate amounts, not excess. A mare that gets too fat during pregnancy faces its own set of problems. Your goal is a healthy, well-nourished mare in good body condition, not a bloated one.

Recognize that nutrition for a pregnant mare isn't just about grain. Forage quality, water, minerals, and vitamins all matter. The mare eating poor hay and no grain isn't going to thrive, but neither is the one getting tons of grain and poor-quality hay. It's the combination that creates good nutrition.

Understand that your mare's individual needs might differ from general recommendations. A young mare might need more than an older one. A mare that's naturally thin might need more than one that holds weight easily. A mare in a cold climate burns more calories than one in a mild one.
