Mentally prepare for the fact that breeding might take longer than you hoped. Some mares get pregnant on the first insemination with frozen semen. Some don't. If your mare's a good breeder and the semen's decent quality, you'll eventually get a pregnancy. But "eventually" might be three, four, or five cycles. That's longer than live breeding or cooled semen, and it tests patience.

Poor post-thaw viability is the biggest issue with frozen semen. You receive your shipment, your vet thaws it, evaluates it, and finds that motility is terrible. Dead or dying semen has very low fertility. Some of this is just luck—some stallions freeze better than others. Some of it reflects the facility's competence. If they're vague or admit it's often low, you're taking a risk.
Storage failures are uncommon but catastrophic when they happen. A liquid nitrogen tank runs dry, and suddenly your semen is useless. Or the facility stops maintaining proper storage and semen deteriorates. This is why reputation and relationships matter. Use facilities known for reliability and responsible storage. If you're storing semen yourself, make absolutely sure you're maintaining the tank properly and have backup systems in place.
Some mares simply don't breed well with frozen semen even though they breed fine with fresh. Nobody fully understands why, but it happens. A mare who conceives immediately with live breeding might take many cycles or never conceive with frozen semen. If your mare's one of those, switching to live breeding or cooled semen makes sense rather than continuing to throw money at frozen semen that isn't working for her.
Timing insemination with frozen semen is still important, though less critical than with cooled semen. Inseminating too early or too late still reduces fertility. The difference is you have flexibility to breed the next cycle if you miss it. That flexibility is nice, but don't get complacent about timing. Ovulation prediction still matters.

That information helps you make decisions about whether to use it.
If you're buying frozen semen that's been stored for years, understand that viability might have degraded somewhat even with perfect storage. Semen that was excellent when frozen ten years ago might be less excellent now. This is usually still workable, but it affects fertility expectations.
Your vet and the facility storing the semen need to communicate about what's in your shipment, what the quality is, and what you can expect.
