Section 3 How To Do It
Putting a fly sheet on your horse is similar to putting on any light blanket, though fly sheets are much easier and quicker than heavier blankets. Start with your horse standing calmly in a halter and ideally cross-tied. Have your sheet ready and settled so you're not fumbling with it. Approach from your horse's left side, which is the standard mounting side and where they're most comfortable with equipment being approached.
Gather the sheet so it's organized and not tangled. You'll throw it over your horse's back from left to right, similar to putting on a regular blanket. The front of the sheet should rest across your horse's shoulders and withers while you secure the back components. Work quickly but gently. Once the sheet is in the general position, stand back and check alignment. The sheet should sit level across the withers and back, not tilted or bunched to one side.

Your primary supply is the fly sheet itself, and like fly masks, fit is absolutely critical. Fly sheets come in sizes typically ranging from forty-eight inches to seventy-two inches or more, measured along the horse's back from the center of the withers to the tail head. Measure your horse properly using the manufacturer's guidelines rather than guessing. A sheet that's too small will be uncomfortable and restrict movement. One that's too large will shift and won't provide proper coverage. Many people go down to a local tack shop and have someone measure their horse to ensure correct size.
Material quality matters for durability and your horse's comfort. Higher-quality mesh is more durable, resists UV degradation, and typically stays cleaner and lasts longer. Timing during the day depends on your turnout schedule and how bad fly pressure is. During peak fly hours—usually mid-morning through late afternoon—fly pressure is most intense, so sheets provide maximum benefit during these times. Some people put sheets on only during peak hours and remove them during early morning and evening when fly pressure is lower. Others leave sheets on during most of the day. If your horse is grazing peacefully in early morning with minimal fly pressure, you don't need the sheet on. If they're being tormented at noon, the sheet definitely should be in place.
Consider removing sheets during nighttime hours unless you're in an area with significant night-flying insect problems. Most fly pressure comes from daytime-active insects, so evening and night removal allows skin to breathe and dry completely. A sheet left on overnight can trap moisture and sweat, creating conditions for skin irritation. Remove it, let your horse's skin dry, and put it back on in the morning.
For horses turned out in a group, you need to consider whether the sheet will hold up to pasture play. Horses playing or running together can catch and tear sheets, or the equipment can shift during activity. A durable sheet can handle moderate play, but rough horses or a group playing aggressively might need sheets removed during their most active time. This requires judgment based on your specific horses and situation.
Seasonal adjustments happen naturally as fly season progresses. Peak protection is needed during the height of summer when flies are most aggressive. As you move into late summer and fall, fly pressure typically declines, and you may need sheets less frequently. By November in most climates, flies are minimal, and you can phase out sheet use. Be prepared to adjust your schedule based on actual fly activity in your area rather than following a rigid calendar.
Cleaning frequency should increase during heavy use. A sheet that accumulates sweat and dust becomes uncomfortable and doesn't provide air circulation as well. During peak fly season when your horse is wearing the sheet most of the day, wash it weekly or as needed. A clean sheet is more comfortable and lasts longer. Plan for this maintenance in your routine rather than letting sheets get crusted with sweat and debris.
Section 6 Tips And Troubleshooting
A horse that constantly shakes off or resists a fly sheet usually has a fit issue. Check alignment carefully—the sheet should sit level across the back and not be bunched on one side. Make sure straps are secure but not so tight they create pressure. Pressure points at the withers, chest, or flanks cause horses to resist. Identify the problem area by looking for rubs or marks on the skin, then adjust the sheet fit or add padding as needed. Remember that sheets require regular inspection and maintenance. Check before each use for tears, strap damage, or other problems.
