Your best strategy is preventing fires through careful facility management, having appropriate extinguishers readily available for small fires that develop, and knowing when to evacuate rather than fight the fire. Understanding fire extinguishers is part of that preparation.
Fire classes are standardized: Class A fires burn ordinary materials like wood and hay. Class B fires burn flammable liquids like gasoline, oil, or paint. Class C fires are electrical fires. Class D fires burn metals. Most equine facilities primarily deal with Class A (hay, wood, straw) and Class B (gasoline, propane) fires, though electrical fires in barns also occur. Multipurpose extinguishers labeled ABC work on the first three classes and are appropriate for most barns.
Even with appropriate extinguishers readily available, your first priority during an active barn fire should be evacuating horses and people immediately. You cannot fight a fire while simultaneously protecting horses that are panicking. The moments you spend attempting to fight a fire are moments not spent evacuating animals to safety. Small fires caught early—like a small grain fire that started in a feeder—might be suppressed with an extinguisher. Section 2 Recognizing The Situation
Understanding fire types helps you recognize what kind of fire you're dealing with and whether it's small enough to extinguish or large enough to require immediate evacuation. Class A fires burn ordinary materials—wood, hay, straw, cardboard, feed. These are the most common fires at equine facilities. The classic hay barn fire is a Class A fire. Class A fires burn relatively slowly if they haven't yet reached flashover—the point where rapidly accelerating heat ignites all materials in the space simultaneously. If you catch a Class A fire early with small flames and minimal smoke, an ABC extinguisher might suppress it. If flames are large or smoke is thick, evacuate immediately.
Class B fires burn flammable liquids—gasoline, diesel, oil, paint, propane. Fires involving fuels stored for equipment use are Class B fires. These burn very rapidly and spread quickly. A small gasoline spill that catches fire looks small but spreads incredibly fast and is extremely hot. Even a small Class B fire should be treated as a serious situation. Class C fires are electrical fires—fires involving energized electrical equipment. These include fires in electrical panels, light fixtures, extension cords, or other electrical equipment. Never use water on an electrical fire because water conducts electricity and you'll be electrocuted. Class C fires require special extinguishers designed for electrical fires. The ABC extinguishers work on Class C fires, but you need to ensure the electrical equipment is de-energized before using a water-based extinguisher, which is impossible in an active electrical fire. This is why electrical fires often require evacuation and calling the fire department rather than fighting them yourself.
Recognize also when a fire is too large or too advanced to fight safely. Fires with flames extending more than a couple of feet, fires with thick smoke, fires actively spreading, or fires in confined spaces demand immediate evacuation. Smoke from fires is dangerous—it contains toxins and depletes oxygen, and even small amounts of smoke can disorient you or make you unable to evacuate safely. If a fire has spread to multiple areas or is affecting the roof or structure, this is beyond extinguisher range. Your evacuation decision should be made very quickly and should err on the side of caution.
Understand your facility layout and exit routes. Where are fires most likely to start—the hay storage area, the equipment/fuel storage area, the electrical room? Where are the exits from each area? Can horses evacuate safely from the barn? Do you have a clear evacuation route that doesn't involve running through smoke or flame? Knowing your facility and exit routes helps you make rapid evacuation decisions and get horses out quickly if needed.
Recognize also personal safety limits. Even if you have an extinguisher and the fire seems small, if you can't breathe the air because of smoke, if the heat is too intense to be near, or if you're unsure you can safely operate, evacuate instead. Protecting horses is important, but your own life is more important. You can't help horses if you're injured or overcome by smoke.
Section 3 Immediate Response
When you discover a fire at your facility, your response depends on the size, type, and location of the fire. If it's a very small fire that you've just discovered—flames less than a foot high, no spreading, no thick smoke—and you're confident about the fire type and appropriate extinguisher, you can attempt to use an extinguisher. Have someone call 911 immediately while you attempt suppression. Give the 911 dispatcher your facility location and fire description so they can dispatch appropriate resources.
Before using an extinguisher, ensure your evacuation route is clear and you can reach safety if the extinguisher fails to suppress the fire. Position yourself between the fire and your exit route so you can escape quickly if needed. Never get trapped between the fire and a wall or closed door. Have an escape plan in place before you start attempting suppression.
Use the PASS method for fire extinguishers: Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher, Aim at the base of the fire where fuel is burning, Squeeze the handle to release the agent, and Sweep side to side at the base of the fire. The key is aiming at the base—you want to suppress the fuel, not aim at the flames. Continue sweeping until the fire is out, then watch for any reignition. If the fire reignites or if you can't suppress it, stop immediately and evacuate.
If the fire is anything larger than a very small fire, or if it's in an area where horses can't evacuate, evacuate immediately. Don't attempt to fight large fires. Start evacuating horses immediately, moving them to a safe location away from the building. If multiple people are present, one person can call 911 while others evacuate horses. Every second counts when horses are involved—panicked horses are difficult to load in trailers, so focus on moving them away from the building even if it means just moving them to the pasture.
As you evacuate horses, move calmly to avoid increasing panic. Speak in calm tones, use halters if available but don't waste time if horses are panicked—it's better to move a loose horse to safety than spend time haltering while the fire spreads. If a horse is trapped in a stall and won't exit despite your attempts, call the fire department and let professionals handle the rescue. Your own safety is paramount, and horses can sometimes find their own way out if you create an escape route.

If the extinguisher used was a foam or powder type, you'll need to clean the affected area to prevent residue damage.
After any fire incident, even a very small one, call your fire department to document the incident and ensure there's no hidden fire spreading in walls or concealed spaces. Small fires can reignite hours later if they're not fully suppressed. Professional inspection ensures no hidden danger remains.
If horses have been evacuated due to fire, assess them for injury or smoke inhalation. Signs of smoke inhalation include coughing, nasal discharge, difficulty breathing, or behavioral changes suggesting disorientation. Horses exposed to smoke should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as fire department activities allow. Some effects of smoke inhalation don't show immediately but develop over hours or days.
If your barn has been damaged by fire, have an electrician inspect electrical systems before returning to use the facility. Fire can damage insulation and create electrical hazards even if the fire was extinguished. Have structural elements inspected before resuming normal use.
If hay or feed has been exposed to fire or smoke, discard it. Even if the fire was small and hay near the fire seems okay, smoke exposure can affect quality and potentially harm horses. Buying new hay is far cheaper than treating horses who develop respiratory problems from contaminated hay.
Implement preventive measures to reduce fire risk going forward. Review your facility's fire safety practices, storage locations for flammable materials, electrical maintenance, and hay storage conditions. Work with your fire department to identify and address specific risk factors at your facility.
Section 5 Prevention Strategies
The best approach to fire safety is prevention—eliminating risks so fires don't start in the first place. The most significant fire risk at equine facilities is hay storage. Hay that's stored with high moisture content can self-ignite through spontaneous combustion, particularly if bales are tightly stacked. Prevent this by only storing well-dried hay and maintaining good air circulation through stored hay. Stack hay in ways that allow air to circulate—don't densely pack bales against walls. If you notice hay that's hot to the touch, smells unusual, or feels damp even though it was stored dry, remove it from the barn immediately and monitor it for potential ignition.
Store all flammable materials—gasoline, diesel, propane, paint, cleaning supplies—in designated areas away from hay and bedding. Use metal storage containers or outdoor storage areas specifically designed for fuel storage. Never store fuel in the barn where a spark or heat source could ignite it. Keep fuel containers secured and labeled clearly so anyone at the facility knows what's stored where.
Maintain electrical systems regularly. Have an electrician inspect the barn's electrical systems annually. Look for damaged wires, overloaded circuits, or deteriorated insulation. Have fire extinguishers readily accessible throughout your facility. Place ABC extinguishers in the hay storage area, the equipment room, and near electrical panels. Ensure all household members know where extinguishers are located and how to use them. Train household members on proper extinguisher use and, equally important, on knowing when to evacuate rather than attempt suppression. Inspect extinguishers monthly to ensure they're in good condition. Check the pressure gauge—the needle should be in the green zone. Develop and practice an evacuation plan. Know where you'll move horses if you need to evacuate the barn. Know your exit routes from each area. Your vet can examine horses and advise on any necessary treatment or monitoring. If any horses are injured during evacuation or fire, get veterinary evaluation immediately.
Contact your insurance company after any fire incident to document what happened and begin the process of claims if property damage occurred. Provide photos and descriptions of any damage and keep records of fire department responses.
If you discover electrical problems that create fire risk—damaged wiring, overloaded circuits, or deteriorated insulation—contact a licensed electrician immediately.
