The closer the new feed is nutritionally to the old feed, the faster the transition can be.
Fat content is another consideration. Adding fat to feed as a calorie source is fine during transition, but a dramatic increase in fat content might cause digestive upset initially. Most feed companies recommend gradual transition even when switching to their own feeds with different fat levels. Section 3 Feeding Guidelines
The classic transition protocol is simple: over 10-14 days, gradually increase the proportion of new feed while decreasing the old feed. Start at 25 percent new, 75 percent old. After a few days, move to 50/50 mix. After another few days, move to 75 percent new, 25 percent old. By day 10-14, feed the new feed fully. This gives bacterial populations time to shift gradually and prevents digestive upset.
Days one through three: Mix 25 percent new feed with 75 percent old feed. Give your horse this mix for three days, then check how they're handling it. Are they eating it well? Is their digestion normal? No diarrhea or signs of discomfort? If everything looks fine, move to the next step. If your horse is refusing the mix or showing signs of digestive upset, stay at this level longer before increasing.
Days four through six: Move to 50 percent new feed, 50 percent old feed. Again, watch your horse's digestion and attitude. A horse showing diarrhea or other digestive upset needs more time at this level. Don't push forward if the horse is clearly uncomfortable. The extra day or two of slower transition prevents problems later.
Days seven through nine: Move to 75 percent new feed, 25 percent old feed. You're mostly on the new feed now, but the old feed is still present in small amounts. This final cushion of familiar food sometimes helps horses whose digestive systems are particularly sensitive. Continue monitoring.
Day 10-14: Switch to 100 percent new feed. By now, your horse's bacterial population should have shifted enough to handle the new feed efficiently. If you're seeing any digestive problems at the 75/25 mix, wait another few days before going to 100 percent new.
However, some transitions require more time. A horse with previous colic history or known digestive sensitivity might need three to four weeks. A horse switching from pasture grazing to significant grain needs longer. A horse changing between very different feeds needs more time than switching between similar feeds. Adjust based on your individual horse.
For particularly delicate transitions, you can move even more slowly. Instead of three-day intervals, use four or five day intervals. Instead of going from 25 to 50 to 75, go 25 to 35 to 50 to 65 to 75 to 90 to 100. This ultra-slow transition takes three to four weeks but ensures absolutely minimal digestive stress. Hard keepers sometimes need to change feeds trying to find something that works better for weight maintenance. With a hard keeper, transition carefully even though you're eager to see if the new feed helps. The last thing you want is digestive upset from a too-quick transition, which would worsen weight loss. Use a slow, careful transition and give the new feed at least two to three weeks at full feeding before deciding whether it's helping. Sometimes feed benefits take time to become apparent.
Breeding mares and young horses being grown benefit from stable, consistent feeding. Transitions should be done during non-critical periods. Don't transition a pregnant mare close to foaling. Don't transition a growing horse during peak growth periods when you're trying to manage bone and tissue development. Plan transitions when the horse doesn't need extreme nutrition optimization.
Easy keepers have more digestive flexibility and can often tolerate slightly faster transitions than horses that are sensitive. However, you still shouldn't rush. Even an easy keeper benefits from gradual transition. Just because they're forgiving doesn't mean you should test their tolerance. Use a standard 10-14 day transition and don't feel you need to push it faster even though your easy keeper could probably handle it.

The biggest mistake is transitioning too quickly. A horse owner switches feeds entirely overnight thinking the issue is just getting used to a new taste, then the horse colics or develops diarrhea 24-48 hours later. By the time they realize what happened, the horse is already suffering. Abrupt transitions cause colic in enough horses that you should absolutely never do it. If someone tells you to just switch feeds immediately, they're giving you bad advice.
Another mistake is not monitoring your horse during transition. You start the transition mix, assume everything is fine, and don't look at your horse's digestion for a week. If your horse develops diarrhea or other problems, you don't know it until the problem is severe. Watch your horse during transition. Check manure consistency daily. Watch attitude and appetite. Comfort level and willingness to eat tells you how well transition is going. If something looks wrong, slow the transition or contact your vet.
Some owners interpret any diarrhea during transition as the transition going wrong, when really some loose manure is normal during dietary change as the bacterial population is shifting. A little softer manure that quickly resolves is different from severe diarrhea or signs of discomfort. Monitor for duration and severity.
