Horses that get chilled during cooldown can develop muscle soreness and stiffness that makes them sore the next day.

Proper cooling also supports recovery. When a horse is slowly cooled under a cooler, their heart rate comes down gradually, respiration normalizes, and their sympathetic nervous system relaxes. The blood vessel dilation that happened during exercise continues in a controlled way, moving metabolic waste products away from muscles. The horse recovers from the work physically and mentally. This proper recovery means the horse is ready to work again sooner, with less muscle soreness, and with less risk of becoming chronically sore.

Wet, cold horses get sick more easily. A sweaty horse exposed to cold wind is setting up for respiratory infections, immune suppression, and general health challenges. A properly cooled horse under a cooler stays healthy and bounces back from work better.

For performance horses, proper cooling between workouts or competitions affects how the horse performs the next day or session. Horses that are cooled well overnight and allowed to recover properly perform better in subsequent workouts. Horses that aren't cooled properly might be sore, stiff, or feeling generally bad the next day, which affects performance and training quality.

There's also the practical matter of water management. A horse that's not dried off before standing in a stall or turned out can develop moisture-related skin issues—rain rot, or simply discomfort from standing wet. Start by understanding what a cooler should do and when to use it. A cooler goes on immediately or very shortly after work ends, while the horse is still warm but starting to show sweat. You don't wait until the horse is cold and has stopped sweating—you put it on while they're actively cooling.

Walk the horse before putting the cooler on if they're extremely sweaty and overheated. A few minutes of walking in shade or cool air brings them down from extreme heat. Then put the cooler on and continue walking. The cooler needs air circulation to wick moisture effectively—don't just put a cooler on a standing, stationary horse. If the horse is still sweating heavily after thirty minutes, continue walking. If they've stopped sweating and their coat feels dry to the touch, you can likely remove the cooler soon.

Don't remove the cooler too quickly. If the horse still feels warm or damp, keep it on. As you keep walking, the horse will continue cooling under the cooler. Remove it when the horse's body temperature has dropped significantly and they're mostly dry or just slightly damp. A horse removed from a cooler while still warm will often sweat again as they stand or get worked up.

After you remove the cooler, the horse should be dry enough to either be turned out or put in a stall without risk. If they're still slightly damp, hang out a bit longer or walk a bit more before removing the cooler. You want that transition to be gradual, not sudden.

For horses that are stabled indoors after cooling, you might use a dry sheet after the cooler is removed—something light that keeps dust off and prevents the horse from getting chilled if the barn is cool. Some people use two coolers—a cooler specifically for the immediate cooling period, then a dry sheet afterward for final drying and comfort.

Section 4 Tools And Supplies

Cooler types range from heavy to light, designed for different climates and seasons. A heavyweight cooler, made of dense fabric, is suited for cool or cold weather. These hold warmth while wicking moisture, perfect for fall, winter, or cool spring work. A midweight cooler works for temperate conditions—not cold but not blazing hot. A lightweight cooler or mesh cooler is for summer or hot climates, providing moisture-wicking with minimal insulation so the horse cools more quickly.

The cooler goes on immediately or very shortly after work stops. The sooner you get it on, the sooner you can start the cooling process. Don't wait an hour—start cooling immediately.

Walking time under the cooler typically lasts fifteen to forty-five minutes depending on intensity of work, horse's fitness level, and environmental conditions. A lightly worked horse might cool in fifteen minutes. A horse that's been worked intensely might need thirty to forty-five minutes. In hot weather, cooling takes longer. In cool weather, it goes faster.

During hot summer months when you're working intensely, using coolers becomes daily routine if you're riding daily. During winter when work is lighter or absent, cooler use might be occasional or unnecessary. Year-round competitive horses use coolers regularly throughout their season, less frequently or not at all during off-season.

Seasonal transitions—spring and fall when temperatures vary unpredictably—require judgment. On a cool day, a heavyweight cooler might be appropriate. On a warm day, a lightweight. Have options available so you can choose what's appropriate for the actual conditions rather than a standard seasonal routine.

Section 6 Tips And Troubleshooting

If a horse seems anxious or resistant to wearing a cooler, start by putting it on for short periods while stationary, so they get used to the feel without the pressure of walking. Let them stand with it on for a few minutes, remove it, repeat. Most horses adjust within a few uses and stop noticing.

If a cooler keeps slipping or shifting during walking, it might be the wrong size, wrong style for your horse's shape, or the fasteners aren't secure. A properly fitted cooler should stay in place while the horse walks. If it's constantly slipping, you're fighting it rather than using it effectively. Try different styles or sizes if available.

Some horses sweat so heavily that moisture is visible running down the cooler. This is okay—it's the cooler wicking moisture away. Don't worry that the cooler looks wet. It's working correctly. The key is that you'll see sweat decreasing over time, and the horse's body temperature drops, indicating that cooling is happening even though the cooler looks wet.

If you're in extremely hot weather and a cooler seems to be keeping the horse too warm, switch to a lightweight or mesh cooler that provides less insulation. Or use very short walking periods under the cooler. Even in hot weather, some cooling assistance is better than none, but you can adjust the intensity based on conditions.

For horses that are hard to cool or stay hot for extended periods, it might not be a cooler issue—it might be fitness level, hydration status, or environmental conditions. Make sure the horse is drinking after work, ensure they have shade, and consider whether overall work intensity needs adjustment. A horse that's struggling to cool might be overworked or dehydrated.
