As you walk through a barn, you're mentally noting whether you see exposed nails, pieces of wood with splinters, concrete with jagged edges, mud or wet surfaces where horses could slip, or obstacles in walkways. Safe barns are maintained to remove hazards before horses encounter them. Unsafe barns accumulate debris, don't address maintenance problems, and leave hazards sitting in place.
Fencing represents one of the highest safety priorities because broken or inadequate fencing means escaped horses, and escaped horses on roads or around other properties create dangerous situations quickly. A good facility has a communication board where owner notes are posted, or regular check-in systems where management communicates with owners about their horses' condition and any concerns. If staff don't know about a horse's chronic lameness, medication requirement, or behavioral issue, they can't accommodate it or recognize if something has changed. Poor communication leads to horses not getting necessary care or people not knowing a horse is injured until significant damage has occurred.

When a facility operates on habit rather than systems, variations happen, and horses often lose out.
Stall cleaning is the most visible daily task and indicates broader management quality. Stalls should be mucked daily at minimum, preferably twice daily for heavily used barns. Proper mucking removes all wet bedding and manure, not just surface spots, and adds fresh bedding to maintain comfort and reduce disease. When you visit a barn, stall cleanliness is immediately visible. Are stalls deeply bedded with clean material, or are they sparse with visible urine and manure? Does the entire stall get cleaned, or just the obvious top layer? Clean stalls indicate someone cares about horse comfort and disease prevention. Dirty stalls indicate corners are being cut.
Feeding routines need consistency and attention to detail. Horses should be fed on a schedule they can anticipate, and feed should be measured appropriately for each horse's needs. A good barn tracks individual feed consumption and notices if a horse isn't eating normally—often the first sign of illness. Staff should know if a horse requires specific supplements or medications mixed with feed and should accurately administer them daily. If a barn owner can't tell you specifically what each horse eats or seems unaware of individual dietary needs, management is loose and things fall through cracks.
Hay quality matters enormously for respiratory health, and a facility that purchases quality hay, stores it properly to prevent mold, and rotates stock so horses eat fresh hay demonstrates good management. Poor quality hay with dust, mold, or weather damage contributes to respiratory disease and colic. A facility with multiple pastures that rotates them allows grass to recover and reduces parasite exposure. A facility using the same pasture continuously eventually has bare, muddy ground where horses stand in mud and manure constantly.
