Topical treatments can help for accessible wounds on larger fish that can be briefly handled. Povidone-iodine or methylene blue applied directly to ulcers with a cotton swab provides concentrated antibacterial action at the wound site. This requires netting and handling fish, which causes stress, so it is not appropriate for all situations. Some keepers find it helpful as an addition to water-based treatment for stubborn ulcers that need direct attention.

Treatment duration for ulcers typically spans two to four weeks depending on severity. The wound itself may show improvement within days, but underlying infection takes longer to resolve.
