Fromia species, including many pink and red varieties, are specialized sponge feeders that consume sponges almost exclusively in their natural reef habitat. This diet is nearly impossible to replicate in captivity without actively maintaining specific sponge populations on live rock and live corals. These species are genuinely problematic in most home aquariums and should only be attempted by advanced keepers with large, established reef systems where sponges naturally colonize surfaces. Many Fromia starfish die slowly over months despite excellent water quality because their dietary requirements simply cannot be met with available foods.

Establish a feeding schedule and track whether your starfish is actually consuming the food you're offering. Many keepers overfeed, thinking their starfish isn't eating, when the reality is that the starfish has no appetite due to shipping stress, poor acclimation, or incompatibility with the current environment. This is entirely normal behavior and indicates a starfish that feels secure in its environment rather than stressed or sick.

Starfish are generally peaceful animals and compatible with most fish that don't attempt to consume them or harass them relentlessly. The threat vector is typically reversed from what new keepers expect—larger predatory fish or aggressive reef fish may harass starfish if space is limited. Avoid housing starfish with aggressive triggerfish, groupers, wrasses known for predatory behavior, or any species with a reputation for harassing and consuming invertebrates. Peaceful fish like small wrasses, gobies, blennies, and damselfish coexist well with starfish without conflict.

Invertebrate compatibility depends significantly on tank size and the specific starfish species. Small shrimp and crabs will likely be consumed by carnivorous starfish species, so don't expect a Red Starfish to coexist peacefully with cleaner shrimp or ornamental crabs. Blue Starfish are typically less aggressive toward other invertebrates but may still consume small crustaceans given the opportunity. Soft corals and hard corals face variable risk—some starfish species consume coral tissue, while others ignore corals completely.
