Some are bold and outgoing, others more cautious. Watching a six line wrasse work through a reef environment, picking at coral surfaces and exploring nooks and crannies, is genuinely entertaining. They're intermediate-level fish, meaning they're not beginner-suitable but they're not impossibly difficult either. They require a reef-appropriate setup, stable saltwater parameters, and an established tank with sufficient food sources naturally available. They're not forgiving of poor water quality or swings in salinity the way some hardier fish are. But for someone with reef aquarium experience and realistic expectations, six line wrasses are absolutely worthwhile.
They're somewhat aggressive toward other wrasses and similar-sized fish, especially males establishing territory. They hunt small crustaceans and copepods, which is perfect for reef control but means they'll eat ornamental shrimp if given the chance. They need 75+ gallons minimum, prefer reef environments with adequate hiding places, and require live food sources in addition to prepared foods.
Six line wrasses live 4-6 years in captivity typically, sometimes longer. They're not a casual addition to an existing reef—they need some planning about compatibility and tank setup. But the reward is one of the most visually stunning and behaviorally engaging fish in the saltwater hobby.

Six line wrasses come from the Indo-Pacific region, specifically Indo-Pacific coral reef environments, with most of the population coming from areas around the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Fiji region. They inhabit coral reef structures where they hunt small crustaceans and pick at coral surfaces—behavior called feeding on the polyps of corals, though they primarily eat the parasites and small organisms on and around the coral rather than eating the coral itself.
They live in reef environments with complex structure, plenty of shelter, and abundant small food sources. The water is clear, warm, and well-circulated. Temperature stays around 74-78°F year-round. They're found in reef areas ranging from shallow lagoons to deeper reef slopes, at various depth zones depending on the specific population. The important environmental variable is the abundance of small food sources—copepods, small crustaceans, small nudibranchs—that make up their natural diet.
In their reef ecosystem, wrasses are important for parasite control. They pick at corals and other organisms, consuming parasites and dead skin. This behavior benefits the ecosystem, and it's one reason they're so efficient at eating copepods and amphipods in captive reef tanks. They're predators of small invertebrates, and this ecological role shapes their behavior and feeding habits. A wrasse without abundant small prey available becomes frustrated and may damage corals or harass other fish out of boredom and hunger.
Six line wrasses are collected from wild reefs for the aquarium trade, though captive breeding has been happening experimentally for years. Most fish available are wild-caught, which means they come from established populations in the Indo-Pacific. They're highly prized in the hobby and command relatively high prices because of their appearance and the challenges of collecting them from remote reef areas.
Their ecology explains why they need specific conditions in captivity. The abundance of small food sources in a reef is essential to their wellbeing. A bare-bottom tank with just fish and prepared foods will frustrate a six line wrasse. An established reef with healthy populations of copepods, amphipods, and other small organisms mimics their natural feeding environment and allows them to express their natural hunting behavior. This is one reason they're intermediate rather than beginner fish—the setup required is more complex than basic aquariums.
Section 3 Tank Requirements And Setup
Tank size minimum is 75 gallons for a single six line wrasse. The 75-gallon breeder tank dimension is ideal—long rather than tall, which gives the fish room to move and hunt. They're active swimmers and explorers that need space to patrol and forage. Larger tanks are always better. A 125-gallon or larger gives the fish more room to establish territory and reduces stress-related aggression.
Water parameters for saltwater reef tanks are standard: 78°F temperature, specific gravity 1.025, pH 8.1-8.3, alkalinity 8-10 dKH, calcium 400-450 ppm, and magnesium around 1200-1300 ppm. Six line wrasses are tolerant of modest parameter variation within these ranges but not tolerant of dramatic swings. If you're managing a reef tank, you already understand parameter stability. If you're not sure about these numbers, hold on adding a six line wrasse until you're comfortable monitoring and maintaining saltwater parameters.
Filtration needs to be robust. Reef tanks have high oxygen demand and produce waste that needs effective removal. A combination of mechanical and biological filtration through canister filters, sumps, and live rock works well. Flow should be moderate to strong—reefs are naturally in current. Six line wrasses don't mind strong flow, and the circulation helps oxygenation and waste removal. Many reef tanks use powerheads to create movement in addition to the return flow from the main system.
Live rock is essential. Not just for the biological filtration it provides, but because it creates the reef structure that six line wrasses need. The rock provides hiding spaces, hunting grounds, and visual interest. A reef tank with minimal rock and mostly open sand is not appropriate for a six line wrasse. You need substantial rock structure—easily 1-1.5 pounds per gallon—arranged to create caves, crevices, and the complexity that makes a reef habitat.
Lighting for reef tanks typically includes both white and blue spectrum lights to support photosynthesis in corals and maintain the reef environment. Full-spectrum lighting also shows the coloring of fish and corals. LEDs are standard for modern reef tanks. Standard 12-hour day/night cycles work, though some people use longer periods or gradual sunrise/sunset simulation. Lighting doesn't directly affect wrasses, but it does affect the overall reef ecosystem they depend on.
Substrate is typically coral sand or aragonite, important for calcium buffering in saltwater systems. Depth can be shallow—2-3 inches—or deeper for sand-sifting species. Six line wrasses don't dig, so depth doesn't matter for their needs. Many reef tanks use shallow sand beds to discourage unwanted organisms and make maintenance easier.
Corals and invertebrates are compatible with six line wrasses with caveats. They hunt small crustaceans and may consume small ornamental shrimp, nudibranchs, or other small invertebrates. Most stony corals and soft corals are not consumed by wrasses. Some wrasses develop a taste for eating coral polyps, though six line wrasses are generally less prone to this than some other wrasse species. If you notice your wrasse damaging corals, that usually indicates insufficient natural food sources available.
Fishes compatible with six line wrasses are typically medium-sized reef-appropriate species. Avoid other aggressive wrasses or similar-sized aggressive fish. Small fish like gobies and blennies may be harassed or eaten depending on the wrasse's mood. Large fish that can defend themselves coexist fine. The tank ecosystem determines compatibility more than any single species combination.

Six line wrasses are natural predators of small organisms. In their reef habitat, they feed almost constantly on copepods, small amphipods, tiny crustaceans, parasites, and small organisms. In a mature reef tank with established populations of these organisms, much of the wrasse's caloric intake comes from hunting natural prey.
In addition to natural food sources, prepared foods should be offered. High-quality saltwater flakes, small pellets, and frozen foods like mysis shrimp or small foods designed for small reef fish work well. Feed once or twice daily with portions equal to what the fish can finish in a few minutes. The prepared food supplements the natural hunting, not the other way around.
Frozen mysis shrimp are particularly good for six line wrasses. They're small enough for the fish to consume easily, they're nutritious, and they trigger the hunting response. Thaw frozen foods in system water before feeding so they don't shock the tank temperature. Live copepod cultures or amphipod cultures, if you have them, are excellent supplements that encourage natural hunting behavior.
Variety matters with six line wrasses. Rotating between prepared flakes, pellets, frozen mysis, and other small frozen foods provides nutritional balance and behavioral enrichment. If a wrasse is hunting in a healthy reef with abundant copepods, the prepared food becomes supplemental nutrition rather than the entire diet. This is the ideal situation.
Watch your wrasse's belly. It should have a slight roundness after eating, not distended. A thin, hollow-bellied wrasse indicates it's either not finding enough food or there's a problem with digestion or health. A wrasse that's constantly hunting and appears hungry despite regular feeding may be indicating that the reef doesn't have sufficient natural food populations. In that case, increasing frequency of frozen food offerings helps, but it's also a sign the tank needs time to develop more natural prey populations.
Feeding frequency adjusts based on natural food availability. In a mature, lightly stocked reef with abundant copepods, the wrasse might only need supplemental prepared food a few times weekly. In a newer tank with developing populations, daily feeding ensures adequate nutrition. Watch the fish and adjust based on its condition and activity level. A well-fed wrasse is active, displays bright coloring, and hunts eagerly.
Section 5 Behavior And Compatibility
Six line wrasses are constant hunters and explorers. They move deliberately through the reef, investigating surfaces, picking at coral, and searching for small prey. This behavior is endlessly fascinating to watch. They're not fish that hide or rest during the day—they're visible and active. Some individuals are bold and outgoing, approaching the feeding spot eagerly and showing no fear. Others are more cautious initially but warm up with time. Personality varies between individuals.
They have a distinct daily pattern. At night, they find a sheltered spot or crevice and become essentially dormant, tucked away safely. The coloring becomes duller at night. At dawn or when the lights come on, they emerge and become active again. This daily rhythm is normal and expected. Make sure your reef has adequate hiding spots for nighttime rest.
Males and females have different coloring and behavior patterns. Males display more vibrant coloring and are more aggressive in establishing and defending territory. Females are duller and less aggressive. If you keep only one wrasse, it doesn't matter whether it's male or female. If you keep multiple wrasses of any species, they need sufficient space and hiding opportunities to avoid chronic fighting.
Compatibility with other wrasses is tricky. Six line wrasses are somewhat aggressive toward other wrasse species, especially males. Two males will fight, sometimes to fatal injury. A male and female of the same species might work in a very large tank, but it's risky. Different wrasse species may coexist if the tank is large enough and there's adequate hiding space, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Most people keep six line wrasses alone rather than attempting multiple wrasses.
Compatibility with other reef fish depends on size and temperament matching. Medium to large fish that can defend themselves coexist fine. Small, passive fish may be harassed or eaten—it depends on the individual wrasse's prey drive and the specific fish species. Peaceful reef fish like many gobies and blennies often coexist without issue, but small fish that look like prey (small dottybacks, for instance) may trigger hunting behavior.
Companionship with invertebrates requires caution. Small ornamental shrimp get eaten. Small crabs and nudibranchs are prey. Larger invertebrates like sea stars or urchins usually coexist fine. The natural diet of copepods and amphipods means the wrasse feeds on organisms at that size constantly, which is actually beneficial for reef health and parasite control.
Breeding behavior isn't relevant for most aquarists since breeding in captivity is difficult and rare. Captive-bred juveniles are becoming more available, but wild-caught remains the norm. If you observe spawning behavior—a male and female rising together in the water column in a specific pattern—that's interesting but doesn't require intervention unless you're specifically trying to breed them.
Section 6 Health And Lifespan
Six line wrasses live 4-6 years in captivity typically, sometimes longer under excellent conditions. Lifespan is affected by water quality, diet quality, stress from tank conditions or incompatible fish, and overall health. A wrasse in a well-established reef with adequate food sources and compatible tank mates can easily reach 6+ years. The same fish in a marginal setup with poor conditions might die in 2-3 years.
A healthy six line wrasse displays vibrant coloring—the reds and blues are brilliant and deep. The fish is active and constantly moving. Eyes are clear and bright. The body is firm, not thin or bloated. The fish eats eagerly at feeding time and hunts opportunistically throughout the day. There's a lightness to the fish's movements and a curiosity about its environment.
Common health issues in six line wrasses are usually environmental rather than infectious. Deteriorating water quality stresses the fish and reduces immune function. Insufficient food availability—either prepared foods or natural prey populations—causes slow starvation and weight loss. Aggression from incompatible tank mates creates chronic stress. Temperature instability or salinity swings cause acute stress. These environmental issues are preventable through proper setup and maintenance.
Parasitic infections like ich or velvet can occur, especially if the wrasse is stressed or introduced to a tank with existing parasite loads. Signs include rapid breathing, lethargy, loss of appetite, or visible white spots. If you suspect parasitic infection, check water parameters first to rule out environmental issues. If water quality is good and symptoms persist, contact an aquatic veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment options.
Physical injuries from aggressive tank mates or rough handling appear as torn fins, scales, or visible wounds. Most minor injuries heal quickly if water quality is maintained. Significant injuries benefit from treatment in a separate hospital tank with good water quality and minimal stress.
Preventive care includes maintaining stable water parameters, providing adequate prepared food supplemented by natural prey populations, ensuring tank mates are compatible, and performing regular maintenance. Quarantine new additions to prevent introducing parasites into an established reef. Avoid direct handling or netting the fish aggressively—that stresses them unnecessarily.
