They're not just pretty decoration—they actively improve water quality by consuming excess food and organic matter on the substrate. They stir the substrate with their constant digging, improving water circulation through the gravel and preventing anaerobic dead spots. This functional benefit combines with their peaceful personality and distinctive appearance to make them popular.
Panda corys are peaceful with everything—they don't chase fish, they don't nip, they don't compete aggressively. They simply go about their business on the substrate, mostly ignoring other inhabitants unless it's feeding time. Even fish that might chase other peaceful fish usually leave corys alone because they spend most of their time on the bottom.

Some color variation exists between individual fish, but the basic black and white pattern is consistent. Section 3 Tank Requirements And Setup
Panda corys need at least a 20-gallon tank for a small group, with larger tanks preferred. A single cory in 10 gallons might survive, but three to six corys in 20 gallons represents comfortable stocking that allows them to school and forage without crowding. Larger tanks provide more substrate surface area for foraging and more stable water conditions, both beneficial for long-term health.
Water temperature should stay between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit, with most keepers maintaining around 75 to 76 degrees. This is warm tropical water that requires heating in most climates. A standard aquarium heater rated for tank size maintains appropriate temperature. Panda corys are fairly adaptable to temperature variation within that range, though consistent warmth is better than constant swings.
Water chemistry should be neutral to slightly acidic, around 6.5 to 7.0 pH. General hardness around 6 to 8 degrees supports their needs. Unlike some more specialized fish, panda corys are adaptable to various water chemistry if stable. They come from regions with different water conditions depending on the exact location, making them fairly flexible. The key is avoiding drastic pH swings or constant fluctuation.
Filtration should be gentle but adequate. Panda corys don't need strong current and they're not strong swimmers. A gentle sponge filter or standard hang-on-back filter set to moderate flow provides appropriate circulation without creating uncomfortable conditions. Three to four times per hour tank volume turnover is reasonable. The filtration should handle their moderate bioload without requiring constant maintenance.
Substrate must be soft—sand is ideal for panda corys because it allows them to dig and root while protecting their delicate barbels. Fine gravel works in a pinch, but it's not ideal. Avoid sharp gravel or coarse substrates that could damage their mouths and barbels during constant digging. Many keepers use nutrient-rich aquasoil in planted tanks with panda corys, which works well since the soil is soft and safe for rooting.
Plants are compatible with panda corys in the sense that the corys won't destroy them. However, they will uproot delicate plants while digging. Hardy plants with strong root systems like sword plants, anubias attached to driftwood, and well-established stem plants usually survive. Floating plants are safe because they're not in the substrate where digging occurs. Expect the landscape to shift as corys dig, and design accordingly.
Lighting should support plant growth if you're using plants—eight to ten hours daily provides appropriate photoperiod. Standard tropical aquarium lighting works fine. Panda corys don't have specific lighting needs beyond what benefits plants and provides visibility for observation.
Section 4 Diet And Feeding
Panda corys are omnivorous bottom-feeders that eat prepared sinking foods and constantly forage on the substrate for organic matter and small invertebrates. A quality sinking pellet food or tablet designed for catfish provides nutritional foundation. These should be high-quality products because cheap foods result in poor growth and health problems. Corys in community tanks also consume excess food that falls to the bottom from other fish eating above them.
The constant foraging that panda corys do in the substrate actually provides a significant portion of their nutrition. In an established tank with adequate organic matter and microorganisms, corys sustain themselves through foraging without requiring heavy supplemental feeding. In newly established tanks with minimal substrate fauna, they need more prepared food supplementation. Over time as tanks mature and substrate fauna develops, their self-sufficient foraging increases.
Live and frozen foods enhance their diet. Bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia should be part of their regular diet if possible. Frozen versions are convenient and work well. Some keepers culture their own live foods for feeding, which provides superior nutrition and natural prey stimulus. The variety keeps corys engaged and seems to support better health than single-food diets.
Vegetable matter is appreciated by panda corys. They'll nibble soft plant growth in tanks, and they'll consume blanched vegetables offered as supplements. Zucchini, spinach, and other soft vegetables a couple times weekly provide supplemental nutrition and seem to be genuinely enjoyed by the fish. Some corys show clear preferences for specific vegetables.
Feeding frequency depends on tank maturity and size. In mature tanks with adequate substrate fauna, once daily feeding of prepared food supplemented with occasional live or frozen foods is adequate. In newer tanks with less substrate development, twice daily feeding ensures adequate nutrition. A good rule is to offer food and observe consumption—if food sits uneaten, you're overfeeding. Corys will consume food eagerly if they're hungry.
One aspect of panda cory feeding is that they're not the aggressive, competitive eaters that some fish are. They move slowly and patiently forage, which means they can be outcompeted by more aggressive feeders. In aggressive community tanks, you need to ensure they get adequate food by feeding sinking foods that reach them before being consumed by middle-water and upper-water feeders. Some keepers feed corys after lights-out when they're more active and competing fish are less interested in food.
Water quality impacts feeding behavior and health significantly. Corys in poor water conditions lose appetite and become lethargic. If your corys suddenly stop feeding or stop foraging, check water parameters. Usually, water changes and parameter correction restore normal feeding behavior quickly.
Section 5 Behavior And Compatibility
Panda corys are social fish that do better in groups than singly. A minimum group of three is appropriate, with six or more being ideal. In groups, they develop natural schooling behavior where they move together, rest in proximity, and seem more confident than solitary individuals. Activity level is moderate and steady. Panda corys are not hyperactive fish but they're constantly in motion in their own slow way. They're most active during feeding times and sometimes rest together in groups at night or during periods of inactivity. Watching them move along the substrate and interact with each other is genuinely soothing.
Compatibility is excellent with essentially every peaceful community fish. Their small size, peaceful nature, and substrate-focused activity means they don't compete or conflict with other inhabitants. They're safe with tetras, rasboras, peaceful dwarf cichlids, other peaceful catfish, and virtually any non-predatory fish. Fish that might chase or eat small fish occasionally still tend to leave corys alone because corys spend most of their time on the bottom.
Compatibility with other bottom-dwellers is good. Multiple cory species can coexist, and corys work well with plecos, otocinclus, and other bottom-feeders. While they might compete for the same food sources, they don't fight over it aggressively. Peaceful coexistence is the norm rather than exception.
Personality is subtle but present. Individual corys develop preferences for hiding spots and feeding areas. Some seem bolder than others. Over time in established tanks, you learn to recognize individual fish and their behavior patterns. They're not as obviously interactive as some fish, but they're not personalities either.
Breeding in community tanks is rare but happens occasionally. Panda corys can breed, and successful breeding indicates excellent conditions since reproduction requires optimal water quality. Most casual keepers don't intentionally breed them—eggs that appear in established tanks are often eaten by other inhabitants or left to fail. Breeding corys deliberately requires specialized setup and knowledge beyond casual care.
Section 6 Health And Lifespan
Panda corys live three to five years in well-maintained aquariums, sometimes longer. Their lifespan depends on genetics, care quality, and water stability. Well-cared-for corys often reach the longer end of that range or beyond. Stressed fish might only live a couple years. The difference is significant, underscoring how much proper care extends lifespan.
The biggest health issue panda corys face is stress from improper water conditions or inadequate tank setup. Poor water quality, temperature swings, and lack of soft substrate all create stress that makes them prone to disease. The cure is usually improved setup and conditions rather than medications. Once conditions improve, health usually follows quickly.
Barbel erosion is specific to corys and something to watch. Their delicate sensory barbels can become eroded or damaged from sharp substrate or poor water conditions. Visible shortening or damage to barbels indicates problems. Prevention through soft substrate and excellent water quality is far better than trying to treat barbel damage after it occurs. Once barbels are damaged, they sometimes regrow but not always completely.
Fin rot is occasional in stressed or injured corys. Dark, tattered fins indicate infection. Water changes and improved conditions usually resolve early fin rot. If infection progresses, antibacterial treatment might be needed. As always, the root cause is usually water quality, so fixing that addresses the problem fundamentally.
ICH is possible in stressed corys. White spots on body and fins indicate infection. Treatment with heat and ich-specific medication resolves it. Corys tolerate treatment fairly well if dosing is appropriate. Always follow medication instructions carefully.
Stress-related disease is the most common health problem in panda corys. Disease in corys is almost always secondary to stress from poor conditions rather than primary infection. Correct the stressful condition and health usually improves rapidly without requiring medication.
A healthy panda cory maintains good appetite, actively forages on substrate, shows good coloration, and swims actively. The barbels should be intact and fully extended while foraging. Dorsal fin should be raised normally. If corys become inactive, hide constantly, stop foraging, or show color loss, something requires correction—usually water parameters or substrate conditions.
One positive aspect of panda cory health is their resilience once established in proper conditions. A stressed, inactive cory in poor conditions often transforms into an active, engaged fish within a week of moving to proper setup with soft substrate, good water quality, and appropriate grouping. This responsiveness underscores how much setup matters for these fish.
One thing to monitor is growth rate in juveniles. Young corys should grow steadily with good nutrition and conditions. Stunted growth indicates problems with diet or water quality that need correction. Normal growth produces healthy adults with good coloration and vigor.
