But cycling is what grows the bacterial colonies your filter needs to process fish waste. You can cycle fishlessly by adding pure ammonia or dropping fish food in to decompose and produce ammonia. Test the water regularly with a liquid test kit, not strips, which are less accurate. When ammonia and nitrite both read zero while nitrate is present, the cycle is complete.
Adding fish after the cycle should be a gradual process, not a shopping spree. Start with a small group of hardy species and let the tank adjust to their bioload for a couple of weeks before adding more. This gives the bacterial population time to scale up to match the increasing waste production. Adding too many fish at once after a fishless cycle can still cause an ammonia spike because the bacteria matured to process the ammonia dose you were adding, not the ammonia from twenty fish.
Establish your maintenance routine from day one. Pick a day for weekly water changes and stick to it. Test your water parameters at least weekly for the first couple of months and monthly once things stabilize. Feed your fish once or twice daily in amounts they can consume within a couple of minutes. Observe your fish every day, not just for enjoyment but to notice changes in behavior, appetite, or appearance that might indicate illness or stress. These habits become second nature quickly and they form the foundation of successful long-term fishkeeping.

Water changes are the backbone of aquarium maintenance and nothing replaces them. Even with perfect filtration, dissolved waste products accumulate over time that only physical removal of old water and addition of fresh water can address. Rinse mechanical media in old tank water, check flow rates, clean the impeller periodically, and replace chemical media when its useful life expires. The key principle is preserving your biological filtration while removing the accumulated debris that restricts flow and reduces efficiency.
Water testing gives you the objective information that observation alone cannot provide. A quality liquid test kit that measures ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH covers the essentials for freshwater. Saltwater keepers add alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium to the testing routine. Skipping water changes because the water looks clear is the silent killer of long-term tank health. Clear water is not the same as clean water. Dissolved waste products like nitrate are invisible and accumulate steadily. A tank that has gone months without a water change might look perfectly clear while harboring nitrate levels that chronically stress every fish in it. By the time the effects become visible through algae blooms or sick fish, the accumulated chemistry problems take significant effort to correct.
