Substrate choice matters less to firefish than to many marine species since they do not interact with the bottom much. A sand bed between one and two inches deep works well for most reef systems. Avoid extremely fine sand that clouds easily, as suspended particles can irritate firefish and reduce water clarity. If keeping a bonded pair, provide sandy areas near cave entrances where they may spawn.

Lighting can be moderate to bright depending on other tank inhabitants. Firefish themselves adapt to various light levels and do not have specific lighting requirements beyond a natural day-night cycle. They may appear slightly more vibrant under actinic blue lighting, but standard reef lighting works perfectly well. They spend most of their time hovering near their chosen cave, occasionally venturing out to feed or explore when they feel confident. Quick movements outside the tank, aggressive tankmates, or changes in the aquarium will send them darting back to safety instantly. This nervous behavior is normal and instinctive. Over time, as they become confident in their environment, firefish venture out more frequently.

Social behavior in firefish is interesting and somewhat variable. In nature, they typically live in pairs or small groups. In aquariums, keeping a bonded pair works beautifully if you can acquire them already paired or introduce two juveniles that bond naturally. Single firefish do perfectly well alone. The challenge is that adding two unrelated adult firefish often results in aggression, with the dominant fish harassing the subordinate constantly. If you want multiple firefish, buy them together as young fish or purchase a proven pair.

Aggression within the species is typically limited to territorial disputes between firefish competing for the same cave. Once hierarchy establishes and each fish has claimed a space, they largely ignore each other. Toward other species, firefish show essentially zero aggression. They do not nip fins, chase other fish, or defend territory. Their only defensive behavior is fleeing, which means aggressive tankmates will dominate them mercilessly.

Ideal tankmates include other peaceful reef fish that will not harass or outcompete the firefish. Clownfish work well, though some particularly territorial clowns may stress firefish near their anemone. Royal grammas, gobies, blennies, and small wrasses all make excellent companions. Peaceful tangs in larger systems generally ignore firefish completely. Avoid any species known for aggression or that might view a small, slow-moving fish as food. Dottybacks, larger hawkfish, most triggerfish, and groupers will either harass or eat firefish without hesitation.

Shrimp and crabs can coexist with firefish without issues. Some firefish will develop relationships with cleaner shrimp, visiting them for parasite removal, which provides interesting behavior to observe. Hermit crabs and snails are completely ignored. The only invertebrate concern is large aggressive crabs or mantis shrimp that might catch and eat a firefish.

Jumping behavior is the single biggest behavioral challenge with firefish. They are accomplished jumpers that will launch themselves through remarkably small openings when startled. Every firefish keeper has a story about finding their fish dried up on the floor. This is preventable with a tight-fitting lid that covers the entire top of the aquarium. Even a half-inch opening is enough for a determined firefish to escape through. Open-top reef tanks and firefish do not mix successfully unless you enjoy constant vigilance.

Firefish typically live three to five years in well-maintained aquariums, with some specimens reaching six or seven years under optimal conditions. Lifespan correlates directly with water quality, diet quality, and stress levels. Firefish kept in stable, peaceful environments with excellent water conditions regularly live longer than those in poorly maintained tanks or systems with aggressive tankmates.

Common health issues affecting firefish include marine ich, also called saltwater ich or Cryptocaryon, which appears as white spots on the body and fins. This parasite stresses firefish severely and can kill them if left untreated. The challenge is that firefish stress easily, and stress suppresses immune function, making them more susceptible to parasites. Quarantining new additions before introducing them to your display tank prevents most ich outbreaks. If ich does appear, catching it early and treating with copper-based medication in a hospital tank offers the best chance of successful treatment.

Nutritional deficiencies occasionally develop in firefish fed exclusively on low-quality dry foods. Symptoms include faded coloration, lethargy, and increased susceptibility to disease. This is entirely preventable with a varied diet including quality prepared foods supplemented with frozen options. A firefish showing vibrant color and active behavior is getting adequate nutrition, while one that gradually fades over weeks likely needs dietary improvement.

Signs of good health in firefish are straightforward to observe once you know what normal behavior looks like. Healthy firefish hover near their cave with fins fully extended, swimming smoothly without jerky movements. Coloration should be vibrant from head to tail, with the transition from pale anterior to deep red posterior being distinct and saturated. Healthy firefish respond to movement outside the tank, even if that response is to retreat briefly. They emerge readily at feeding time and compete for food actively.
