They should not be aggressive or nippy since Elephant Nose stress easily and their elongated snout makes an obvious target. They should not outcompete the Elephant Nose for food since these slow, nocturnal feeders cannot compete with aggressive daytime eaters. Good choices include larger tetras like Congos, peaceful catfish like Corydoras, and calm cichlids like discus or angelfish if water parameters match.
Species to avoid include anything known for fin nipping, fast aggressive feeders, and fish that might view the Elephant Nose as prey. Tiger barbs, serpae tetras, and similar nippy species will harass them constantly. Larger cichlids may attack them. Very active fish that dominate feeding time will leave your Elephant Nose hungry. This means prevention through excellent water quality and quarantine of new tankmates becomes absolutely critical. Signs of good health in an Elephant Nose include active nocturnal foraging, a plump body with no visible wasting, intact fins without fraying, and responsive behavior when food is offered. Their skin should appear smooth without visible spots, patches, or excessive slime coat. A healthy specimen reacts to movement outside the tank and displays curiosity about its environment. Lethargy, hiding constantly even at night, refusing food, and weight loss all indicate problems that need immediate attention.
Water quality issues cause most health problems in this species. Ammonia or nitrite spikes, even brief ones, damage their sensitive skin and gills. High nitrates suppress their immune system over time. Temperature swings stress them significantly more than most tropical fish. Maintaining stable, pristine conditions prevents the vast majority of health issues. Test parameters weekly and perform water changes of 25 to 30 percent at least once per week.
