Distinguishing males from females becomes easier once shrimp are mature. Females are typically larger with curved underbellies designed to carry eggs. Males are slimmer and smaller with straighter body profiles. Looking at a group of adult crystals, the size difference is usually obvious once you know what to look for. For a breeding colony, having more females than males works well - a ratio of two or three females per male ensures breeding opportunities without excessive male competition.

The breeding cycle begins when a female molts and releases pheromones into the water. Growth rate depends on food availability, water temperature, and individual genetics. Under good conditions, shrimplets grow noticeably each week and begin showing color and pattern within the first month. By two to three months of age, juveniles are large enough to sex and evaluate for pattern quality. Full adult size and breeding readiness typically occurs around four to six months after hatching, though this varies with conditions.
