What makes corydoras so appealing is the combination of practical utility and genuine personality. They spend their days combing the substrate for uneaten food, but calling them cleanup crew sells them short. These are social, active fish with fascinating group dynamics. They rest together in clusters, forage in coordinated groups, and occasionally dart to the surface for a gulp of atmospheric air in a behavior that startles new keepers but is completely normal. Their body language is surprisingly readable once you learn it. Relaxed corydoras fan out across the substrate with barbels working. Stressed corydoras huddle motionless in a corner. That readability makes them one of the best indicator species in a community tank because when something is off with the water, the corydoras usually tell you first.
For beginners, corydoras are one of the safest first purchases you can make. Hardy, tolerant of a reasonable range of conditions, and universally peaceful. The common species like bronze, peppered, and albino corys are inexpensive and widely captive-bred. More exotic species like panda, sterbai, and pygmy corys offer variety without a significant jump in difficulty.
A group of six needs a minimum of 20 gallons, with soft to moderately hard water, pH between 6.0 and 7.8, and temperatures between 72 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit depending on species. The most important thing to understand is that corydoras are obligate social fish. A single cory or even a pair will be stressed. They need at least six of the same species to feel secure.
Before buying, know that their reputation as fish that survive on scraps is one of the most damaging myths in the hobby. They need targeted feeding with sinking foods and a substrate that will not damage their sensitive barbels. Sharp gravel causes barbel erosion leading to infections and misery. Sand or smooth fine gravel is a fundamental requirement, not a preference.

Corydoras are native to South America, inhabiting freshwater environments from Trinidad down through Argentina. The greatest species diversity is in the Amazon and Orinoco basins, but corydoras have colonized virtually every freshwater habitat the continent offers. Their adaptability in the wild is part of what makes them successful in aquariums, but understanding their natural conditions helps you provide better care than simply relying on their tolerance.
Most species are found in slow-moving tributaries, shallow streams, and flooded forest margins where water is soft and slightly acidic. The substrate is typically fine sand or decomposing leaf litter, which corydoras sift through constantly searching for insect larvae, worms, and organic debris. Fallen branches, root tangles, and submerged vegetation provide shelter and shade. The water is often tannin-stained from decomposing plant matter, giving it the tea-colored look that fishkeepers replicate with Indian almond leaves and driftwood.
Ecologically, corydoras are benthic scavengers and micro-predators. They actively hunt small invertebrates in the substrate and consume biofilm, algae, and whatever organisms they encounter while foraging. They are preyed upon by larger fish and birds, which is why they evolved bony armor plates and defensive fin spines. Some species produce a mild toxin from glands near their spines that discourages predators.
Corydoras entered the aquarium trade early, with bronze and peppered corys among the first tropical fish widely available in the mid-twentieth century. Most common species today are commercially bred in Asia and Florida, well adapted to aquarium conditions and reasonably priced. Wild-caught specimens appear for rarer species and tend to be more demanding about water quality. Captive breeding has produced color variations like albino and longfin forms popular with hobbyists.
Understanding their habitat directly improves your care. The connection between sand substrate and healthy barbels reflects how these fish evolved to feed. Their barbels are sensory organs designed to probe soft substrate, and forcing them over sharp gravel is like digging through broken glass with your fingertips. Their preferences for dimmer lighting, planted areas, and group living all trace back to wild conditions. You do not need to replicate a South American stream perfectly, but aligning your setup with their natural needs produces healthier, more active fish.
Section 3 Tank Requirements And Setup
The minimum tank size for a group of corydoras is 20 gallons, assuming one of the smaller common species in a group of six. For larger groups, mixed species, or community setups, think 30 gallons or more. Corydoras are active foragers that cover a lot of ground, and a larger footprint gives them more substrate to work. A long, shallow tank is actually better than a tall narrow one because they spend the vast majority of their time on or near the bottom.
Water parameters for most common species are forgiving but not unlimited. Temperature should sit between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit for the majority, though sterbai corys tolerate warmer water up to 82 degrees, making them one of the few corydoras suitable for discus tanks. pH between 6.0 and 7.8, soft to moderately hard water in the 2 to 15 dGH range. Stability matters more than hitting a perfect number. A steady pH of 7.4 is far better than one swinging between 6.5 and 7.0 because you are chasing an ideal.
Filtration needs adequate biological capacity without creating excessive current along the bottom. Corydoras are not strong swimmers and avoid areas with heavy flow, so a powerful filter with unrestricted output can reduce their usable habitat. Size your filtration for capacity but diffuse the output or direct it along the back glass. Sponge filters work beautifully for corydoras-focused tanks, providing excellent biological filtration with gentle movement.
Substrate is the single most important setup decision. Sand is ideal. Fine, smooth aquarium sand lets corydoras engage in natural foraging, plunging their faces into the substrate and sifting it through their gills. Watching this behavior is one of the genuine pleasures of keeping these fish, and it only happens on appropriate substrate. Sharp gravel damages barbels over time, leading to erosion and infection. If you have gravel and want corydoras, consider switching. They will show you the difference within days.
Hardscape should include driftwood, smooth stones, and dense planting that creates sheltered resting spots. Corydoras appreciate tuck-away spots, and they will pick a favorite location where the whole group congregates. Java fern, anubias, and amazon swords work well, tolerating the same conditions while providing cover without overwhelming the tank floor.
Lighting should be moderate. Corydoras come from habitats with canopy cover and tend to be more active under subdued light or with floating plants diffusing it. They do not need special equipment beyond a reliable heater, appropriate filtration, and a standard lid. Their occasional surface dashes for air are normal supplemental breathing, not escape attempts.
Maintenance for a corydoras tank is straightforward but consistent. Weekly water changes of 25 to 30 percent keep parameters stable, and you should vacuum the substrate gently during changes to remove debris that accumulates in the feeding zone. Pay attention to the areas where your corydoras congregate most, as uneaten food and waste tend to collect in the same spots they prefer to rest. A clean substrate is not just an aesthetic choice for these fish. It is directly connected to their health because they are in constant physical contact with it.
Section 4 Diet And Feeding
In the wild, corydoras are opportunistic omnivores that hunt through substrate for insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, biofilm, and organic debris. This varied diet should inform how you feed them in captivity. The biggest mistake people make is assuming corydoras will thrive on whatever scraps fall to the bottom from feeding the other fish. That approach produces malnourished, listless corydoras that never display the active foraging behavior that makes them so entertaining.
The staple diet should be high-quality sinking pellets or wafers formulated for bottom-feeding catfish. These sink quickly and hold together on the substrate long enough for corydoras to find and consume them. Look for pellets with whole fish or shrimp meal as the first ingredient rather than wheat or corn fillers. Protein content in the 35 to 45 percent range works well for growing fish. Feed enough that the group finishes within a few hours. Corydoras are grazers, not gulpers, so they take their time.
Supplemental feeding makes a noticeable difference in health, color, and activity. Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and tubifex are eagerly accepted and provide variety that dry foods cannot match. Live foods trigger natural hunting instincts and get the whole group actively foraging. Blanched zucchini or cucumber slices are also accepted and provide plant-based nutrients. Remove uneaten vegetables after 12 hours.
Feed once or twice daily for adults, with total amounts calibrated so food is consumed within two to three hours. Overfeeding is common because people assume bottom dwellers need extra to compensate for what other fish eat first. In reality, overfeeding causes the same problems it does in any fish: poor water quality, obesity, and reduced lifespan.
In community tanks, faster mid-level fish will intercept sinking pellets before they reach bottom if given the chance. Feeding after lights out or dropping food in a corner where corydoras congregate first helps ensure they get their share. Some keepers use feeding dishes or target-feed with a turkey baster, which works well in competitive setups. You will know your feeding routine is working when your corydoras maintain rounded bellies without food accumulating on the substrate between meals.
Section 5 Behavior And Compatibility
Corydoras are among the most peaceful fish you will ever keep, and their social behavior is one of their greatest appeals. These are genuine schooling fish that form tight groups and derive visible comfort from their own kind. A group resting in a cluster, swimming in formation across the tank floor, or simultaneously surfacing for air is a daily reminder of why these fish have been popular for decades.
Minimum group size is six of the same species, and more is always better. Corydoras kept in smaller numbers show stress behaviors including constant hiding, reduced appetite, and lack of the active foraging that characterizes healthy groups. Different species can share a tank, but each should have at least six because they prefer to school with their own kind. A tank with three bronze and three peppered corys is less ideal than six of either species, though mixed groups do interact and rest near each other.
Aggression is essentially nonexistent. They do not establish territories, chase other fish, or compete aggressively for food. The closest thing to conflict is minor jostling when multiple fish converge on the same pellet, and that is brief and harmless. Males may pursue females during breeding condition, but this is reproductive behavior rather than aggression.
Ideal tankmates include virtually any peaceful community fish that will not try to eat them. Small tetras like neons, cardinals, embers, and rummy-nose are classic companions occupying mid-level space while corydoras work the bottom. Rasboras, cherry barbs, honey and pearl gouramis, and otocinclus all work well. The general rule: if a fish is peaceful and will not compete aggressively for bottom space, it is probably a good companion.
Avoid anything large or aggressive enough to harass or eat corydoras. Most cichlids apart from rams and apistos in appropriate tanks are poor choices because territorial behavior creates chronic stress. Large catfish, aggressive barbs like tiger barbs in small groups, and fin-nippers should be avoided. The corydoras fin spines offer some protection, but living with threatening fish shortens lifespan and suppresses natural behavior.
Breeding can occur spontaneously in well-maintained community tanks. After a large water change with slightly cooler water simulating the rainy season, females swell with eggs and males become attentive. The classic T-position mating embrace is unique to corydoras. Females place fertilized eggs on smooth surfaces around the tank. In community setups most eggs get eaten, but they can be moved to a separate container if breeding is your goal.
Section 6 Health And Lifespan
Healthy corydoras in well-maintained aquariums typically live between 5 and 10 years, with some exceeding that under optimal conditions. Common species like bronze and peppered corys tend toward the longer end, while smaller species like pygmy corys average 3 to 5 years. The single biggest factor in longevity is water quality. These fish are more sensitive to dissolved waste than their hardy reputation suggests, and chronic exposure to elevated ammonia, nitrite, or high nitrates causes slow damage that shows up as reduced lifespan, dulled color, and susceptibility to infection.
The most common health issues relate directly to their bottom-dwelling lifestyle. Barbel erosion is widespread among corydoras on inappropriate substrate, and once those sensory organs are damaged, the fish loses its primary feeding mechanism. Bacterial infections of the barbels and underbelly follow substrate injuries. Red blotch disease, presenting as reddened areas on the belly and around pectoral fins, is typically associated with poor water quality or bacterial infection. Ich affects corydoras as readily as any fish, but note that they are sensitive to many common medications, particularly those containing copper or malachite green, so treatment requires careful dosing.
A healthy corydoras is an active corydoras. They should forage regularly, rest in groups during quieter periods, and display smooth unbroken fins with intact barbels. Coloring should be clear and distinct, eyes bright and responsive. A rounded belly indicates good nutrition without being distended. Any deviation including clamped fins, faded color, solitary hiding, or refusal to eat warrants attention.
Preventive care centers on clean water and clean substrate. Weekly water changes of 25 to 30 percent keep dissolved waste in check, and vacuuming during changes removes debris that harbors bacteria right where corydoras spend all their time. Quarantine new fish for at least two weeks before adding them to an established group. Maintain stable temperatures with a reliable heater to prevent thermal stress that suppresses immune function.
Act quickly when something goes wrong. Corydoras can decline faster than many community species because their bottom-dwelling lifestyle puts them in constant contact with whatever is contaminating the substrate. If you notice a cory sitting motionless and separate from the group, breathing rapidly, showing reddened belly areas, or displaying white cottony patches, start with a large water change and check your parameters immediately. Catching problems early makes the difference between a quick recovery and a cascading loss through the entire group.
