Most aquarium species reach one and a half to three inches, featuring a rounded body covered in bony plates rather than scales, a flat belly for resting on the substrate, and an endearing whiskered face with barbels used for foraging along the bottom.
What makes Corydoras so popular is their behavior as much as their appearance. These are active, social bottom dwellers that spend the day scooting across the substrate in groups, poking through sand for food with their barbels, and occasionally darting to the surface for a gulp of atmospheric air. That surface dash startles new keepers until they learn it is completely normal respiratory behavior. They have a cheerful, busy quality that adds movement and personality to the bottom layer of a tank that might otherwise sit relatively quiet.
Care difficulty is genuinely beginner-friendly, which is why Corydoras are among the first fish many new keepers add to a community setup. They are hardy, peaceful, and tolerant of a reasonable range of conditions. The care points beginners most often overlook are the need for soft substrate that protects their delicate barbels, the importance of keeping them in groups rather than alone, and the fact that they need their own dedicated feeding rather than surviving on leftovers from other fish.
Most species do well in 20 gallons or larger, with temperatures generally between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit depending on species. They accept pH of 6.0 to 7.8 and prefer soft to moderately hard water. As social fish, they need groups of six or more of the same species for proper behavior and stress reduction.
Before buying, understand that the common advice about Corydoras being cleanup crew that eat leftover food is misleading. They forage along the substrate, but they need their own sinking foods to stay properly nourished. Relying on scraps from other fish leads to underfed catfish that slowly decline while their owner assumes they are fine because they appear to be eating constantly.
Section 2 Natural Habitat And Origins
Corydoras are native to South America, with species distributed across a vast range from Trinidad and Venezuela down through the Amazon and Orinoco basins to the rivers of Argentina and Uruguay. This enormous geographic spread encompasses wildly different habitats, from soft acidic blackwater streams in the Amazon to cooler, faster-flowing subtropical rivers in southern Brazil. The habitat diversity explains why different species have somewhat different temperature and water chemistry preferences in captivity.
In the wild, most Corydoras inhabit shallow, slow-moving waters with sandy or fine-gravel bottoms. They are found in streams, tributaries, floodplain pools, and marginal areas of larger rivers where the substrate is soft enough for comfortable foraging. Many species live in leaf litter zones where decomposing organic matter supports the small invertebrates and larvae that form the basis of their diet. Water conditions range from clear to heavily tannin-stained depending on the specific location.
Ecologically, Corydoras fill the bottom-feeding scavenger niche, constantly working through substrate to find insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and organic debris. They play a meaningful role in nutrient cycling within their stream ecosystems. Their armored body plates and sharp pectoral fin spines provide defense against predators. Many species produce a mild venom from glands at the base of these spines, which is mostly harmless to humans but causes a painful sting if you handle them carelessly. Netting Corydoras requires caution because their spines tangle easily in mesh.
Corydoras have been aquarium staples for over a century. Species like Corydoras aeneus and Corydoras paleatus were among the first tropical fish widely kept in home aquariums. Today both wild-caught and captive-bred specimens are available, with many popular species bred commercially in large numbers at affordable prices. Rarer species command higher prices and may only be available through specialty importers or hobbyist networks.
For keepers, the natural context reinforces two critical points. First, substrate must be soft because these fish evolved foraging through sand and fine sediments, and sharp gravel damages their sensitive barbels over time. Second, they are social animals living in wild groups sometimes numbering in the hundreds. Keeping a solitary Corydoras denies the fish a fundamental biological need and results in stressed, inactive animals that never show their natural engaging behavior.
Section 3 Tank Requirements And Setup
A 20-gallon tank is the starting point for a school of smaller Corydoras species like pygmy or habrosus corys, while the more common medium-sized species including bronze, peppered, and sterbai do better in 30 gallons or more. Footprint matters more than depth because these are ground-level fish that use horizontal space for foraging. A standard rectangular tank always serves them better than a tall narrow design that wastes vertical space these bottom dwellers rarely occupy.
Temperature preferences vary by species more than with many other genera. Tropical species like Corydoras sterbai prefer 76 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, while subtropical species like Corydoras paleatus are comfortable at 68 to 76 degrees. Research the specific species you are keeping rather than applying a single temperature range across the board. pH of 6.0 to 7.8 covers most species, with soft to moderately hard water being the general preference.
Substrate choice is the single most important setup decision for Corydoras and the one most frequently gotten wrong. Fine sand is the ideal substrate because it allows natural foraging behavior where the fish sift sand through their gills while extracting food particles. Smooth fine gravel is acceptable as a second choice. Coarse, sharp, or jagged gravel damages their barbels over time, leading to erosion, infection, and loss of the sensory organs they depend on for feeding. If your current substrate is unsuitable, switching to sand in at least the area where the Corydoras spend most of their time is worth the effort.
Filtration should be adequate for the bioload without creating excessively strong bottom currents that make foraging difficult. Corydoras prefer gentle to moderate flow at the substrate level. Sponge filters work well for Corydoras-focused setups and have the added benefit of not posing a risk to small catfish. Canister and hang-on-back filters both work provided the intake is protected with a sponge prefilter to prevent curious catfish from getting trapped.
Live plants complement Corydoras nicely and the catfish generally leave them alone. Broad-leaved plants like swords and cryptocorynes provide resting spots that Corydoras appreciate, and dense plantings along the back and sides create a sense of security that encourages more confident foraging behavior in the open areas. Driftwood and smooth rocks add visual interest and additional resting surfaces.
A secure lid is recommended because Corydoras occasionally launch themselves out of the water during their surface breathing dashes, and an open-top tank creates a real drowning-on-your-carpet risk. Lighting is not a major concern for the catfish themselves, though they tend to be more active and visible under moderate rather than intense lighting conditions.
Section 4 Diet And Feeding
Wild Corydoras are omnivorous bottom feeders eating insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, plant matter, and organic debris sifted from the substrate. In captivity they need a dedicated feeding program rather than the leftover-based diet that too many keepers provide. The persistent myth that Corydoras will thrive on whatever food other fish miss and allow to sink is responsible for more underfed, malnourished catfish than any other single piece of bad advice in the hobby.
High-quality sinking pellets or wafers designed for bottom-feeding fish should form the dietary staple. These foods are formulated to sink quickly and hold together on the substrate long enough for the slow, methodical feeding style that Corydoras employ. Look for products with whole fish, shrimp, or insect meal as primary ingredients. Feed enough that the school has food available for at least ten to fifteen minutes of active foraging, as Corydoras eat more slowly than most mid-water fish.
Frozen and live foods provide valuable supplemental nutrition and stimulate natural foraging excitement that keeps the school active and engaged. Bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and tubifex worms are all eagerly consumed and provide the animal protein that supports healthy growth and body condition. Watching a group of Corydoras discover a pile of frozen bloodworms on the substrate and crowd in to feed is one of the more entertaining feeding displays in a community tank. Offer these supplemental foods two to three times weekly.
Feed Corydoras once or twice daily, ideally including at least one feeding after the tank lights go out when they tend to be more actively foraging without competition from daytime mid-water feeders. Evening or nighttime feeding ensures the catfish get their share without being outcompeted by faster fish that intercept food before it reaches the bottom.
Watch for signs of underfeeding, which is far more common than overfeeding with this species. A well-fed Corydoras has a gently rounded belly when viewed from the front. Pinched or concave bellies indicate the fish is not getting enough nutrition. Barbel erosion combined with thin body condition is a clear signal that both diet and substrate need immediate attention.
Section 5 Behavior And Compatibility
Corydoras are among the most peaceful fish in the freshwater hobby, making them compatible with virtually any non-aggressive community species. Their bottom-dwelling lifestyle means they largely stay out of the way of mid-water and surface fish, occupying a tank zone that many other community species ignore entirely. They mind their own business, never start fights, and contribute active movement and personality to a part of the tank that would otherwise have little going on.
Social behavior is the defining characteristic of Corydoras in the aquarium. These fish need to be kept in groups, and the difference between a solitary Corydoras and a school of six or more is dramatic. Single fish hide, remain inactive, and often refuse to eat properly. A group of the same species immediately activates natural behaviors including synchronized foraging, group resting, and the playful chasing and interaction that make Corydoras so enjoyable to watch. Keep six minimum, and more is always better.
While Corydoras school with their own kind most readily, different species will loosely associate with each other in the absence of conspecifics. However, the strongest social bonds and most natural behavior come from keeping groups of the same species together. If your tank is large enough, having two different species in groups of six each creates a wonderful dynamic with two distinct schools working the substrate simultaneously.
Ideal tankmates include other peaceful community fish of any size that will not view the catfish as food or harass them. Tetras of all sizes, rasboras, livebearers, gouramis, small peaceful cichlids like rams and apistos, and other peaceful catfish all work well. Corydoras are particularly good companions for shy or nervous fish because their constant confident activity along the bottom seems to reassure more timid species that the environment is safe.
Avoid keeping Corydoras with aggressive bottom-dwelling fish that compete for substrate territory, large aggressive cichlids that may injure or eat them, or any species known to nip at slower-moving tankmates. Their armor plates provide some protection, but the stress of living with aggressive tankmates still takes a toll on their health and behavior over time.
Breeding behavior in Corydoras is distinctive and entertaining. When conditions are right, females become visibly plump with eggs and males begin actively chasing them. The classic Corydoras breeding position involves the female holding eggs between her ventral fins while the male fertilizes them, after which the female deposits the sticky eggs on tank glass, plant leaves, or smooth surfaces throughout the tank. In a community setting, eggs are usually eaten by other fish, but dedicated breeders can collect and hatch them separately.
Section 6 Health And Lifespan
Corydoras typically live five to ten years in captivity depending on species, with some of the larger species like Corydoras sterbai occasionally exceeding ten years under excellent care. This is a long-lived group of fish by community aquarium standards, and their longevity reflects both inherent hardiness and the fact that when their basic needs are met, they are remarkably durable animals. The most common reasons Corydoras fall short of their lifespan potential are barbel damage from unsuitable substrate, chronic underfeeding, and the stress of being kept alone or in too-small groups.
Barbel erosion is the health issue most specific to Corydoras and the one most directly preventable through proper setup. Sharp or coarse substrate gradually wears down the barbels, which are sensory organs the fish depend on for finding food. Eroded barbels often become infected, leading to further deterioration and eventually a fish that cannot feed effectively. Switching to sand substrate resolves the root cause, and barbels can partially regenerate in clean water once the damaging substrate is removed.
Common diseases affecting Corydoras include ich, bacterial infections, and fungal issues, all generally triggered by stress or poor water quality. Corydoras are notably sensitive to salt and many medications, which is important to know before treating a tank that houses them. Copper-based treatments should be used with extreme caution and at reduced doses. Salt baths that might be harmless to other community fish can stress or harm scaleless and armored catfish. Always research medication compatibility before treating a tank containing Corydoras.
A healthy Corydoras is active and constantly foraging during its waking hours, with full intact barbels, clear eyes, and a well-rounded body shape. The bony plates should show consistent coloring and pattern for the species without patches of discoloration, fungus, or redness. Fish that sit motionless on the substrate for extended periods during normally active times, clamp their fins, or show eroded barbels and thin bodies are communicating problems that need investigation.
Cooperative stress removal is the foundation of Corydoras health. Soft substrate protects their barbels. Groups of six or more provide the social structure they need. Dedicated sinking foods ensure proper nutrition. Gentle tankmates prevent chronic harassment. Consistent water quality through regular maintenance prevents the parameter swings that trigger disease. When these fundamentals are in place, Corydoras are among the most trouble-free and rewarding fish you can keep, delivering years of busy, cheerful personality at the bottom of your community tank.
