Copper-based ich medications cannot be used in a tank containing these shrimp, and even trace copper contamination from plumbing or improperly sourced water can cause mortality. Coral Banded Shrimp are fully capable of catching and eating small sleeping fish at night, particularly species that rest motionless on the substrate or wedged into rockwork. Small gobies, blennies, and other nano-sized fish are most at risk. Snails, small hermit crabs, and other slow-moving invertebrates can also become prey. This does not mean they will definitely eat every small creature in the tank, but the risk is real and should factor into stocking decisions.
Compatible tankmates include most fish too large for the shrimp to catch or overpower. Clownfish, tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and other common reef fish of moderate to large size coexist well and many will actively use the shrimp's cleaning services. The shrimp generally ignores corals, making it reef-compatible, though it may occasionally walk across coral colonies in ways that cause temporary retraction. Large hermit crabs and urchins are typically left alone as well.
Mated pairs of Coral Banded Shrimp can be kept together successfully and will share a cave, often positioning themselves side by side at the entrance. True pairs are typically sold together by retailers who have observed them cohabiting peacefully. Do not assume that buying two random individuals and placing them together will result in pair bonding - it is far more likely to result in combat and a dead shrimp.
During molting periods, Coral Banded Shrimp become extremely vulnerable and will retreat deep into their cave for one to two days until the new exoskeleton hardens. Other tank inhabitants generally leave them alone during this time if the shrimp has adequate shelter, but tankmates that might harass a soft-bodied shrimp should be considered a risk factor. Coral Banded Shrimp typically live two to five years in captivity, with well-maintained specimens in stable marine systems occasionally reaching the upper end of that range. Longevity depends primarily on water quality stability, successful molting cycles, and freedom from copper exposure. These are not exceptionally delicate animals by marine invertebrate standards, but they are less forgiving of environmental instability than many fish species sharing the same tank.
The most common health concerns revolve around the molting process. Failed molts, where the shrimp cannot fully shed its old exoskeleton, represent the leading cause of death in captive Coral Banded Shrimp. Failed molts typically trace back to inadequate calcium, magnesium, or iodine levels in the water, or to rapid parameter shifts that disrupt the molting cycle. A shrimp that has not molted in an unusually long period or that appears to be struggling during a molt is showing signs of a water chemistry problem that needs investigation.
Copper toxicity is an ever-present risk for any tank housing invertebrates. Even trace amounts of copper from medications used on fish, contaminated water sources, or copper plumbing can be fatal to Coral Banded Shrimp. If you need to treat fish diseases with copper-based medication, the fish must be moved to a separate hospital tank for treatment. There is no safe copper level for these shrimp.
Signs of a healthy Coral Banded Shrimp include strong coloration with crisp red and white banding, intact and fully extended antennae, active and alert posture at the cave entrance during daylight, and regular molting on a predictable schedule. Loss of color intensity, missing or shortened antennae, reluctance to emerge from hiding, and refusal of offered food all warrant investigation of water parameters and potential stressors.
