All three are typically triggered by environmental stress or declining water quality rather than appearing spontaneously in a well-maintained system. Ich presents as small white spots on the body and fins and frequently emerges after temperature fluctuations, transport stress, or introduction to an unfamiliar environment. Fin rot targets the flowing extensions that males are specifically prized for and almost always traces back to water quality deterioration as the underlying cause. Bacterial infections manifest as cloudy eyes, reddish streaks along the body, or general lethargy paired with noticeable appetite loss.

Recognizing a healthy Congo Tetra is straightforward once you know the markers. The body should display strong iridescent color that visibly shifts as the fish moves through different light angles. Fins should be fully extended and flowing naturally rather than clamped against the body. The fish should swim actively with its school during daylight hours and respond with genuine eagerness at feeding time. Eyes should be clear and bright, and the body should be free of spots, patches, or film.
