What nobody mentions is that the algae-eating behavior diminishes significantly as the fish grows, that an adult Common Pleco produces more waste than most other fish in a community tank combined, and that you are going to need a tank of 125 gallons or larger to house this fish properly as an adult. Care difficulty for the Common Pleco is intermediate rather than beginner, primarily because of the space and filtration demands of an adult specimen. The fish itself is hardy, tolerant of a range of water conditions, and not susceptible to most common diseases when kept in clean water. The challenge is entirely logistical - providing adequate tank size as the fish grows, maintaining water quality with a heavy waste producer, and accepting that this is a long-lived animal with a twenty-year potential lifespan.

Tankmates to avoid include other large pleco species unless the tank is enormous with multiple territorial zones, small slow-moving bottom dwellers that might be harassed or displaced, and any fish small enough to be accidentally trapped against the glass by a pleco wedging into a corner. The other well-documented compatibility issue is the tendency of Common Plecos to latch onto flat-bodied fish like discus and angelfish to feed on their slime coat, particularly in tanks where the pleco is not being fed adequately. A well-fed pleco in a large tank rarely exhibits this behavior, but it is worth noting.
Aggressive cichlids can coexist with Common Plecos better than you might expect because the pleco's armored body and spine-bearing fins make it a poor target for bullying. Most cichlids learn quickly that harassing a pleco is unproductive.
