Canister filters work well for larger setups, and running two filters provides redundancy and extra biological capacity. Sand or large smooth gravel makes the best substrate for Commons. Avoid medium-sized gravel in the range that can be picked up and swallowed but not passed safely - this is a real impaction risk with goldfish that actively mouth the substrate while foraging. Fine sand lets them sift naturally, and bare bottom tanks are an option for easy maintenance though they remove the foraging enrichment that goldfish clearly enjoy.

Live plants are a challenge with Common Goldfish because they will eat, uproot, and generally destroy most aquatic vegetation. Hardy species like anubias and java fern attached to rocks or driftwood have the best survival rate since they are tough-leaved and not rooted in substrate. They use the full footprint of whatever space you give them, which is another reason why adequate tank or pond size matters so much.

Commons are peaceful fish with virtually no territorial aggression. They coexist comfortably in groups of any size, provided the space and filtration support the bioload. The one behavioral exception is spawning season, when males chase females persistently and aggressively. In a pond with ample room and vegetation for the female to escape, this is natural and manageable. In a tank, spawning chases can exhaust and injure females if they cannot get away from persistent males. Having hiding spots and visual barriers helps.

The best tankmates for Common Goldfish are other single-tailed goldfish varieties - Comets and Shubunkins are ideal companions that share the same water requirements, activity level, and feeding behavior. Do not mix Commons with fancy goldfish. The fancies are slower, less competitive for food, and more vulnerable to harassment during spawning. Weather loaches and Dojo loaches are excellent non-goldfish companions that tolerate the same cool water temperatures and have a peaceful disposition.

Avoid housing Commons with tropical fish that need warm water, small species that will become food as the goldfish grow, and aggressive fish that would harass them. Plecos are commonly suggested but most species prefer warmer water and some develop a habit of latching onto the goldfish's body to feed on their slime coat, which causes stress and injury. The simplest and safest community is a group of single-tailed goldfish in an appropriately sized setup.

Breeding happens readily in ponds with natural seasonal temperature changes. As water warms in spring, males develop white breeding tubercles on their gill plates and pectoral fins and begin chasing females. Eggs are scattered over plants and hard surfaces. Adults eat their own eggs without hesitation, so fry survival requires either separating eggs or providing extremely dense vegetation where some can escape predation.

A healthy Common Goldfish has clear bright eyes, fully extended fins with no clamping or ragged edges, strong consistent coloration, and active responsive behavior. They should eat eagerly and swim with purpose. Early warning signs include clamped fins, loss of color intensity, reduced appetite, sitting on the bottom, gasping at the surface, and any visible spots, sores, or film on the body.
