The most important thing to know before buying clown killifish is that they are not annual killifish. Flow is minimal to nonexistent - these are fish of still water and gentle currents, not rushing streams. In their ecosystem, clown killifish are surface-dwelling micro-predators. A 5-gallon tank can house a trio of clown killifish, but 10 gallons provides noticeably better results in terms of water stability, breeding success, and the ability to keep a larger group that displays more natural social behavior. These fish do not need swimming distance - they hover in one spot for extended periods and rarely cross more than a few inches at a time. What they need is surface area rather than depth or length, making wider shallow tanks slightly better than tall narrow ones.
Water chemistry should lean soft and slightly acidic. Temperature between 68 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit gives you a wide working range, with 74 to 76 being a comfortable middle ground. pH between 6.0 and 7.5 covers their tolerance, with the lower end closer to natural conditions. General hardness between 4 and 8 dGH and carbonate hardness between 2 and 6 dKH suit them well. They can adapt to moderately harder water, but soft water brings out the best coloration and encourages breeding behavior. If your tap water is very hard, consider mixing it with reverse osmosis water.
Filtration needs to be gentle above all else. Clown killifish live at the surface, and a filter that creates strong surface agitation pushes them away from their preferred zone and disrupts their feeding. Sponge filters are ideal because they provide biological filtration with minimal current. If using a hang-on-back filter, baffle the output to reduce surface disturbance. Internal filters with adjustable flow work if turned to their lowest setting. The goal is clean, stable water without churning the surface.
Floating plants are not optional for this species - they are a core habitat requirement. Water lettuce, Amazon frogbit, salvinia, and red root floaters all work well. These plants provide the overhead cover that clown killifish instinctively need to feel secure, and they also serve as spawning sites where the fish deposit eggs among fine roots. Stem plants that reach the surface like water sprite add additional mid-level cover. A tank without floating plants will have clown killifish that hide constantly and never show their best behavior.
Dark substrate dramatically improves both the fish's coloration and their comfort level. Black sand, dark gravel, or fine dark substrate against which their bands and fin colors contrast sharply makes a visible difference in how these fish present themselves. Light-colored substrate washes them out and seems to make them more skittish. Driftwood and leaf litter add tannins that tint the water slightly and further replicate natural conditions.
A tight lid is essential. Clown killifish are excellent jumpers and will find any gap in your tank cover. Their surface-dwelling habit means they are always close to the escape route, and startled fish launch themselves out of the water with no warning. Cover every opening, however small. If you use floating plants that need air circulation, fine mesh or window screen material over open sections prevents escapes while allowing gas exchange.

The biggest feeding challenge with clown killifish is food size. Their mouths are tiny, and they will ignore pellets, flakes, or frozen foods that are too large to swallow. Crushed flake food works for some individuals, but the most reliable staple foods are micro pellets designed for nano fish, vinegar eels, microworms, baby brine shrimp, and daphnia. Frozen cyclops are an excellent prepared option that most clown killifish accept readily. Whatever you offer, it needs to stay at or near the surface long enough for the fish to find and eat it.
Live foods produce the strongest feeding response and are the best option for conditioning breeders or getting newly purchased fish eating. Baby brine shrimp are the gold standard - easy to hatch at home and irresistible to clown killifish. Vinegar eels and microworms provide smaller live options that even newly hatched fry can consume. Fruit flies, both wingless and flightless varieties, are excellent surface foods that trigger intense hunting behavior. Maintaining one or two live food cultures alongside your tank ensures a reliable supply.
Feed small amounts two to three times daily rather than one larger feeding. Their tiny stomachs fill quickly, and uneaten food sinking below the surface zone is wasted since these fish rarely pursue food below the top inch of the water column. If you have bottom-dwelling tankmates, they will clean up what the killifish miss, but in a species-only setup excess sinking food simply fouls the water.
The most common dietary mistake is feeding too infrequently or with food too large for them to eat. Clown killifish that appear thin with pinched bellies are almost always being underfed or offered food they physically cannot consume. Watch closely during feeding to confirm your fish are actually eating. If they show interest but turn away from food repeatedly, the pieces are too large. Adjust accordingly until you find the size and type that works for your particular group.
Section 5 Behavior And Compatibility
Clown killifish are peaceful, quiet fish that spend nearly all their time in the top inch of the water column, hovering just beneath the surface among floating plant roots and occasionally making short darting movements to grab food or interact with each other. They are not active swimmers in the traditional sense - they hang in place with subtle fin movements, almost motionless for long periods before making quick precise movements. This calm surface presence gives them a distinctly different energy than mid-water schooling fish.
Socially they do best in groups of six or more, with a ratio favoring females over males. Males are mildly territorial and will display to each other with spread fins and intensified coloration, but these interactions rarely escalate beyond posturing. In a group with adequate floating plant cover, subordinate males simply move to a different section of the surface. Keeping only two males often concentrates aggression, while a group of four or more males diffuses it. Females are entirely peaceful toward each other and toward males.
The compatibility question is primarily about finding tankmates that will not bother the killifish rather than the other way around. Clown killifish are easily intimidated by larger, faster, or more boisterous fish. Active schooling species like danios or barbs that create constant mid-water movement stress surface dwellers. Any fish large enough to eat them obviously should be avoided. Good companions include ember tetras, pygmy corydoras, small rasboras like the chili rasbora, and small freshwater shrimp like cherry shrimp or amano shrimp.
Species-only tanks honestly produce the best results with clown killifish. Without competition for surface food and without the stress of larger tankmates moving beneath them, clown killifish color up more vividly, breed more readily, and display more of their natural behavioral range. A dedicated 10-gallon tank with dark substrate, floating plants, dim lighting, and a group of eight to ten clown killifish is one of the most rewarding nano setups you can build.
Breeding happens almost continuously when conditions are right. Males court females with fin displays near the surface, and eggs are deposited individually among floating plant roots over the course of several days. The eggs are tiny and adhesive, sticking to plant roots where they develop over about two weeks before hatching. Parents do eat eggs and fry they encounter, so survival rates improve with dense floating plant coverage that hides developing eggs from adult fish. In a heavily planted tank, you will eventually notice tiny fry appearing at the surface without any intervention.
One behavioral note worth mentioning - clown killifish are significantly more active and visible when the lights are dimmed or when floating plants shade the water. Under bright, open lighting they tend to hide or hover nervously. Adjusting your lighting or adding floating plant coverage solves it immediately.
Section 6 Health And Lifespan
Clown killifish live two to four years in captivity, which is considerably longer than the annual killifish species that give the family its unfortunate reputation for short lifespans. With stable water conditions, appropriate feeding, and minimal stress from tankmates, most individuals reach the two to three year range comfortably. Their small size means they mature quickly and can begin breeding at around four to six months of age.
The most common health issues are related to feeding and water quality rather than specific diseases. Starvation from inadequate feeding frequency or food that is too large for their mouths is the number one killer of clown killifish in home aquariums. They have fast metabolisms relative to body size and need multiple small feedings daily. The second most common issue is stress-related decline caused by inappropriate tankmates, excessive current, or lack of surface cover. A stressed clown killifish loses color, hides constantly, and becomes progressively weaker.
Common freshwater diseases like ich and velvet can affect clown killifish, though they are not particularly prone to them in well-maintained setups. Their small size makes medicating tricky because standard dosing can be harsh on tiny fish. If treatment becomes necessary, half-strength doses are often recommended for nano species, and salt treatments should be approached cautiously since killifish from soft water habitats have lower salt tolerance than many other freshwater fish. Prevention through quarantine of new additions and consistent water quality is far preferable to treatment.
A healthy clown killifish hovers at the surface with fins held naturally, shows vivid banding and bright tail coloration, responds actively to food being offered, and maintains a gently rounded body profile rather than looking pinched or sunken. Males in good condition display intensified fin coloration and actively court females. Eyes should be clear and bright. Any clamping of fins, loss of color intensity, or withdrawal from the surface zone warrants checking water parameters and feeding practices.
Preventive care focuses on the basics done consistently. Maintain stable soft water through regular small water changes rather than infrequent large ones. Feed appropriately sized food multiple times daily. Keep floating plants healthy and abundant. Protect from aggressive tankmates. Cover the tank completely to prevent jumping losses, which are one of the most common causes of death in this species. These are not demanding fish, but they do need their specific requirements met consistently rather than approximately.
