Snails and hermit crabs are generally hardier than shrimp regarding parameter fluctuations, but all invertebrates benefit from stability. Drip acclimate all new additions slowly over at least 45 minutes to an hour rather than floating the bag and dumping.
Stocking density matters and more is not always better. A common mistake is massively overstocking the cleanup crew based on arbitrary per-gallon formulas you find online. Those formulas often recommend far more animals than a tank can sustainably support. Start with a modest crew and add members if you see specific waste accumulation they could address. A small piece of blanched vegetable, a shrimp pellet, or a bit of frozen food dropped near their territory ensures they get adequate protein and minerals. Cherry shrimp colonies especially benefit from regular supplementation because their rapid reproduction means more mouths competing for the same natural food sources.
The biggest dietary mistake is assuming the crew needs nothing from you. The second biggest is overfeeding the tank to compensate, which defeats the purpose by creating more waste than the crew can handle. Strike a balance - maintain your normal fish feeding routine, supplement crew members that show signs of hunger, and monitor body condition across all your cleanup species to catch nutritional shortfalls before they become losses. A well-fed crew works harder and lives longer than one scraping by on whatever scraps happen to drift their way.

Cleanup crew members are generally among the most peaceful inhabitants in any aquarium, which is what makes them effective - they go about their work without causing trouble for other tank residents. Cichlids, loaches, pufferfish, large wrasses, and most predatory species view shrimp as food. Understanding these lifespans helps you plan for natural replacement rather than assuming losses always indicate a problem.
The most common health issue across all cleanup crew members is environmental stress from poor or fluctuating water quality. Invertebrates in particular lack the physiological flexibility that fish have for coping with parameter swings. Ammonia and nitrite at levels fish tolerate without obvious distress can kill shrimp and sensitive snails. Copper at concentrations used to treat fish diseases is acutely lethal to virtually all invertebrate crew members. Sudden temperature shifts, pH crashes, and salinity changes in marine systems all hit cleanup crew members harder than fish.
Healthy crew members are active and visible during their preferred hours. Snails move steadily across surfaces leaving clean trails behind them. When crew members die, resist the urge to immediately replace them in bulk. A single death may be natural aging.
