The appeal goes well beyond the cleaning service. Cleaner shrimp are personable creatures that learn to associate their keeper with food, often climbing right onto your hand during tank maintenance once they feel comfortable. Watching one wave its antennae to advertise its station, then delicately work over a fish three times its size, is one of those moments that reminds you why you got into this hobby in the first place. Their bold coloration stands out against live rock, and they tend to position themselves front and center rather than hiding like many invertebrates.

Care difficulty sits at intermediate, and the reason is water chemistry sensitivity rather than behavioral complexity. These are hardy creatures in stable conditions, but as invertebrates they are far more sensitive to parameter swings than most fish. Copper-based medications kill them outright, sudden salinity changes can be lethal, and they need consistent calcium and alkalinity levels to molt successfully. If your tank chemistry holds steady and you remember to never dose copper in the display, cleaner shrimp are quite manageable to keep long-term.

A 20-gallon tank is the practical minimum, though they genuinely prefer the added stability that comes with larger water volumes. They need specific gravity between 1.023 and 1.025, temperatures from 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4. They can be kept singly, in pairs, or in small groups and are genuinely reef-safe, posing no threat to corals or other invertebrates under normal feeding conditions.

Before purchasing, understand that acclimation is the single most dangerous period. These shrimp cannot tolerate rapid salinity or temperature changes, and a rushed transfer from the store bag kills more cleaner shrimp than any disease ever will. Plan on a slow drip acclimation over at least an hour and avoid exposing them to air during the move. They molt regularly as they grow, and the first time you see a perfect shrimp-shaped shell sitting on your substrate you will think yours died. It did not. Look around and you will find the slightly larger, slightly softer version hiding nearby until its new shell hardens.

Lysmata amboinensis ranges across tropical and subtropical waters from the Red Sea and East Africa through Southeast Asia to the central Pacific islands. They also occur in parts of the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic, making them one of the most widely distributed marine shrimp species in the aquarium trade. This broad range means they inhabit varied reef environments, though they consistently gravitate toward areas with abundant rocky structure and steady fish traffic for their cleaning services.

In the wild they establish themselves on coral reefs at depths between 15 and 130 feet, claiming stations in crevices, under ledges, and along prominent coral formations. The water in these habitats is warm, clear, and well-oxygenated with moderate to strong current flow. Salinity remains remarkably stable in open ocean reef environments at around 35 parts per thousand, which is precisely why these shrimp react so poorly to the salinity fluctuations that sometimes occur in home aquariums. The surrounding substrate is typically coral rubble, sand, and live rock with plenty of nooks providing quick retreat when needed.

Ecologically, cleaner shrimp fill a mutualistic niche that benefits the entire reef community around them. They remove ectoparasites, dead tissue, and fungal infections from client fish, providing a genuine health service that fish actively seek out. In return the shrimp receive a steady food supply without needing to hunt or compete. This relationship is so well established that even large predatory fish hold perfectly still and open their gill covers to allow thorough cleaning. The shrimp advertise their stations by waving their long antennae in a rhythmic motion that fish throughout the reef learn to recognize as a safe invitation to approach.

Cleaner shrimp entered the marine hobby decades ago and remain widely available at most saltwater shops today. The majority of specimens in the trade are wild-caught, though captive breeding programs have grown increasingly successful in recent years. Wild collection is generally considered sustainable given their wide distribution and prolific reproductive rate. No significant color morphs or selectively bred varieties exist since the natural red and white banding is already vivid and consistent across their entire geographic range.

Understanding their natural habitat directly informs how to keep them successfully in captivity. The remarkable stability of open ocean water explains their acute sensitivity to parameter swings - they simply never experience rapid changes in the wild. The shrimp itself does not need extra swimming space since they stake out a small territory and stay near it, but larger water volumes buffer against the parameter swings that cause invertebrates the most trouble. A 20-gallon tank can shift noticeably in temperature or salinity from a single top-off or a warm afternoon, while a 40-gallon system absorbs those same changes with far less impact on its inhabitants.

Water parameters need to stay within a fairly tight range for long-term success. Temperature should hold between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with consistency mattering more than hitting a precise number within that window. Specific gravity should sit between 1.023 and 1.025, measured with a reliable refractometer rather than a swing-arm hydrometer that can be off by enough to matter. pH between 8.1 and 8.4, alkalinity between 8 and 12 dKH, calcium between 380 and 450 ppm, and magnesium between 1250 and 1350 ppm. That calcium number matters because cleaner shrimp build their exoskeletons from calcium carbonate and need adequate dissolved calcium to molt successfully every few weeks.

Filtration should follow standard marine practice with emphasis on biological capacity and effective nutrient export. A quality protein skimmer rated for your tank handles dissolved organics and helps maintain the water clarity these shrimp experience on natural reefs. Powerheads should provide moderate flow throughout without creating dead zones where detritus collects. Cleaner shrimp avoid high-flow zones but need enough water movement for proper oxygenation and to keep waste suspended for mechanical filtration to capture.

Live rock forms the backbone of the setup, serving as both biological filtration and habitat structure. Arrange it to create caves, overhangs, and crevices the shrimp can use as cleaning stations and retreats during vulnerable post-molt periods. They will choose one prominent location as their primary station, so give them several good options and let them decide. Substrate can be crushed coral, aragonite sand, or fine reef sand, with finer grain giving better foraging opportunity.

They are genuinely reef-safe and will not pick at coral polyps or clam mantles under normal feeding conditions. Shaded retreat areas help after molting when their shell is still soft. Keep open areas near the front so you can actually watch the cleaning interactions.

Lighting is dictated by your corals, not the shrimp. A secure lid helps during the first weeks since startled shrimp can launch out of open-top tanks. An auto top-off system prevents the gradual salinity creep from evaporation that stresses invertebrates more than most keepers realize.

Section 4 Diet And Feeding

In the wild, cleaner shrimp derive most of their nutrition from parasites, dead skin, mucus, and debris removed from client fish, supplemented by food particles drifting through the water column and organic detritus scavenged from reef surfaces. They are true omnivores with a protein bias, and understanding this helps you feed them properly in captivity rather than assuming the cleaning behavior alone provides adequate nutrition.

In a home aquarium they readily accept virtually any prepared food offered to the tank. High-quality marine pellets, flake food, and frozen foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood all work well as dietary staples. They intercept sinking food with impressive speed and precision using those long front appendages. If your fish are fast eaters and the shrimp is not getting its share during regular feedings, try target feeding by placing food directly near the shrimp's station with a pipette or turkey baster.

Frozen foods represent the best supplemental nutrition you can offer. Mysis, enriched brine shrimp, diced raw table shrimp, and small pieces of squid or clam provide the protein and variety that keeps these invertebrates in peak condition. Occasional offerings of nori or blanched spinach add plant-based nutrition, though cleaner shrimp show far less enthusiasm for vegetable matter than meaty foods. Dietary variety helps ensure the full spectrum of amino acids and minerals needed for healthy molting and vibrant coloration.

Feed once or twice daily, offering only what the tank inhabitants consume within a few minutes. Overfeeding is more common than underfeeding in marine systems because excess food breaks down rapidly in warm saltwater and spikes nutrient levels. A well-fed shrimp has a visibly full stomach area and moves actively around its territory. An underfed one becomes increasingly aggressive about intercepting food and may start picking at coral polyps, which is almost always a hunger response rather than any natural predatory tendency.

The most important dietary consideration is ensuring adequate iodine and calcium to support the regular molting process. These minerals come from both food and the water column, so maintaining proper water chemistry works alongside a varied diet. Some keepers supplement iodine directly, but this should only be done if testing confirms levels are genuinely low since excess iodine can be harmful. Avoid freshwater fish foods as a primary diet since they lack the marine-specific nutrition saltwater invertebrates require for sustained health.

Section 5 Behavior And Compatibility

Cleaner shrimp are among the most engaging invertebrates you can keep, and their behavior is what sells most people on the species far more than appearance alone. They spend much of the day perched at their chosen cleaning station with antennae waving in the current, advertising their services to any fish that passes nearby. When a fish approaches and holds still, the shrimp climbs aboard and methodically works over the body, gills, and sometimes even inside the mouth if the fish cooperates. In a well-stocked reef tank this happens multiple times throughout the day and genuinely never gets old to watch unfold.

Socially they are remarkably tolerant of their own kind and can be kept singly, in pairs, or in groups depending on tank size. Lysmata amboinensis are protandric simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning all mature individuals function as both male and female. Any two adults housed together will eventually pair up and breed, with both individuals carrying eggs at the same time. In larger tanks, groups of three to five create multiple cleaning stations and provide broader coverage for the fish community. They establish loose hierarchies but rarely display anything resembling real aggression toward each other beyond minor food squabbles.

Aggression toward other species is essentially nonexistent under normal circumstances. They do not harass fish, other invertebrates, or corals when adequately fed. The only pushy behavior shows up at feeding time, and that is enthusiasm rather than territorial aggression. They pose no threat to any fish too large for their relatively small claws, which covers virtually every species in a typical community reef setup.

Ideal tankmates include most community reef fish such as clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, blennies, anthias, and cardinalfish. Peppermint shrimp, emerald crabs, snails, and most coral species also coexist without issues.

The avoid list is shorter but critical. Large predatory fish like lionfish, groupers, triggerfish, and pufferfish will eat cleaner shrimp without hesitation. Hawkfish are deceptively dangerous - they perch quietly but snatch shrimp in an instant. Large dottybacks and bigger damselfish can harass them to the point of chronic stress. The cleaning relationship that protects these shrimp on wild reefs does not always hold in a confined aquarium where a hungry predator has limited options.

Breeding is common in captivity and adds genuine interest without causing community problems. Paired shrimp carry bright green eggs under their tails, and larvae are released into the water column on a regular cycle. In most reef tanks the larvae are consumed by fish within hours, so population is never a concern. Adults show no territorial changes during breeding and continue their station behavior throughout the entire reproductive process.

Section 6 Health And Lifespan

Cleaner shrimp typically live three to five years in captivity when kept in stable, well-maintained conditions. Some specimens reach six years, though that is exceptional rather than typical. The primary factors determining lifespan are water quality consistency, successful molting cycles, and freedom from chemical exposure. A cleaner shrimp in a mature reef tank with steady parameters and a varied diet has every chance of reaching the upper end of that range.

The most common health issue is failed molting, almost always caused by inadequate calcium, magnesium, or iodine levels in the water. During a normal molt the shrimp splits its old exoskeleton along the back, climbs out, and the new soft shell hardens over a day or two. When water chemistry is off, the old shell may not split cleanly or the new shell may fail to harden properly. You can spot a failed molt by finding a shrimp stuck partway out of its old exoskeleton, or one that remains unusually soft and lethargic for more than 48 hours after shedding. Bacterial infections sometimes appear as white or fuzzy patches and are usually secondary to stress or injury.

A healthy cleaner shrimp is active, alert, and responsive to its surroundings. The antennae are long, intact, and in constant motion. Body coloration is vivid with clean red and white banding and no dark spots or discoloration. The shrimp moves confidently around its territory, adopts its cleaning posture for approaching fish, and comes to the front at feeding time. Healthy specimens molt on a regular cycle every three to eight weeks and resume normal activity within a day or two of shedding.

Preventive care centers on water stability above all else. Perform regular water changes of ten to twenty percent weekly using properly mixed saltwater matched to your tank's temperature and salinity. Test calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium regularly and supplement as needed. Never add copper-based medications to a tank containing any invertebrates - copper is acutely toxic to shrimp at the same concentrations that are therapeutic for fish diseases. If fish need copper treatment, move them to a hospital tank.

Watch for loss of color vibrancy, food refusal, hiding during active hours, damaged antennae, and general lethargy as warning signs that something is wrong. Check your water parameters immediately when you notice these changes because the cause is almost always environmental. Cleaner shrimp can decline from apparently healthy to critically ill within 24 to 48 hours during a significant parameter shift. Prompt correction gives the best chance at recovery, but consistent maintenance that prevents the problem in the first place is always the smarter approach.
