Stabilize conditions if fluctuations are causing stress. Make sure heaters are working properly and sized appropriately for the tank. Establish consistent lighting schedules. Perform regular partial water changes on a predictable schedule rather than sporadic large changes that shock the system. Boring consistency lets fish settle into comfortable routines.
After removing stressors, give fish time to recover. Immune systems suppressed by chronic stress do not bounce back immediately. It may take weeks for fish to regain normal coloration, appetite, and behavior. Maintain excellent conditions during this recovery period and avoid introducing new fish or making changes that might stress recovering individuals.

Feeding practices can reduce or increase stress depending on how you approach them. Feed amounts that fish can consume without intense competition. Multiple small feedings often work better than one large feeding if aggression during feeding is a problem. For shy species, feeding in ways that allow them to eat without being pushed aside by dominant tankmates prevents feeding time from becoming a stressor.
Tank maintenance should avoid unnecessary disruption. Rescaping, moving decorations, or performing maintenance that requires reaching into the tank repeatedly all stress fish temporarily. While these activities are sometimes necessary, clustering them rather than spreading them out gives fish periods of calm between disturbances. Beyond disease prevention, quarantine lets new arrivals recover from shipping stress before facing the challenge of establishing themselves in a community. Fish added directly to an established tank must immediately cope with existing social hierarchies while still stressed from transport.
Provide appropriate space from the start rather than planning to upgrade later. Many fishkeepers start with tanks too small, intending to move fish to larger quarters as they grow.
