Other popular species include the blue-green chromis, the black bar chromis, and the blue chromis, each bringing slightly different coloration and size to the tank. As a group, chromis are among the most recommended beginner marine fish for good reason.
What draws fishkeepers to chromis is the schooling behavior they display in reef tanks. Most marine fish are territorial or solitary, making a coordinated school of shimmering chromis moving together through live rock and coral an unusual and appealing sight in saltwater setups. They add constant motion to a reef tank without the aggression problems that plague many of their damselfish cousins. Their coloration is subtle compared to clownfish or tangs, but a school of chromis catching the light as they move creates a dynamic backdrop that makes the entire tank feel alive.
Care difficulty for chromis is genuinely beginner-friendly, provided you have a properly cycled and stable marine aquarium. They tolerate a reasonable range of water parameters, accept prepared foods readily, and adapt to new environments faster than many marine species. The caveat is that this is beginner-friendly by saltwater standards, which still means maintaining salinity, temperature, pH, and water quality at levels that require more equipment and attention than freshwater fishkeeping demands.
A school of chromis needs at least a 30-gallon tank, though larger is always better for maintaining stable marine water chemistry and providing adequate swimming space. They thrive in standard reef parameters with temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 8.1 to 8.4, and specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. As schooling fish, they should be kept in groups of at least five, with larger odd-numbered groups tending to distribute aggression more evenly.
The one thing that catches new chromis keepers off guard is attrition within the school. Chromis establish hierarchies, and in smaller groups, the dominant fish can slowly stress subordinate members to the point of decline. Starting with a larger group and providing plenty of swimming room and line-of-sight breaks helps manage this reality, but losing one or two chromis from a school over the first several months is common enough that experienced keepers consider it part of the process rather than a failure.

Chromis species are found throughout tropical and subtropical reef systems across the Indo-Pacific, with the green chromis having one of the broadest distributions of any reef fish. Their range extends from the Red Sea and East African coast across the Indian Ocean through Southeast Asia, Australia, and into the Western Pacific islands. This enormous natural range means the species has adapted to a wide variety of reef conditions, which partly explains its hardiness in captivity.
In the wild, chromis inhabit the upper portions of reef structures, typically found in large aggregations above branching coral heads where they feed on passing zooplankton in the water column. They prefer areas with moderate to strong current that delivers food and oxygenated water, and they stay close enough to the reef structure to dart into the coral branches when predators approach. Shallow reef flats, lagoons, and the protected sides of outer reef walls are all typical habitat. Water in these environments is warm, clear, and well-oxygenated with stable salinity and alkaline pH.
Ecologically, chromis serve as an important link in the reef food chain. They feed primarily on zooplankton drifting in the current, converting this tiny food source into biomass that feeds larger reef predators. Schools of chromis are a primary food source for groupers, lionfish, moray eels, and many other predatory reef species. Their constant presence above coral heads also contributes to nutrient cycling on the reef, with their waste providing nitrogen compounds that feed coral and algae growth below.
Chromis have been staples of the marine aquarium trade for decades, with the green chromis consistently ranking among the top five most purchased saltwater fish worldwide. The vast majority of specimens sold are wild-caught from Indo-Pacific collection sites, though captive breeding has become viable for several species. Wild-caught chromis are generally hardy shippers compared to many marine species, which contributes to their availability and relatively low retail price.
Understanding their reef habitat explains several key aspects of keeping chromis successfully. Their preference for open water above reef structure means they need swimming space in the upper portions of the tank rather than just caves and rock work. Their dependence on current-delivered food in the wild translates to active feeding in the water column in captivity. Their reliance on coral branches as predator refuges means they appreciate rockwork with overhangs and gaps they can retreat into when startled, even in a tank without actual predators.
Section 3 Tank Requirements And Setup
A minimum of 30 gallons is needed for a small school of five chromis, with 55 gallons or larger being substantially better for long-term success. The extra volume provides more stable water chemistry, more swimming space to reduce intraspecies tension, and room for the school to display natural behavior rather than being cramped in a small reef. Standard rectangular tanks work well since chromis primarily use horizontal swimming space in the mid to upper water column.
Water parameters should follow standard reef keeping guidelines. Temperature between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit with 76 to 78 as the sweet spot. Specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025, with 1.025 being the most stable target for a reef system. pH of 8.1 to 8.4, alkalinity of 8 to 12 dKH, calcium at 380 to 450 ppm, and magnesium at 1250 to 1350 ppm. Ammonia and nitrite must be undetectable, and nitrate should stay below 20 ppm, ideally under 10 for a reef with corals. These parameters are not specific to chromis - they are the standard for any healthy reef tank.
Filtration for a chromis tank means proper reef filtration, period. A quality protein skimmer sized appropriately for your tank volume is the foundation. Live rock at roughly one pound per gallon provides biological filtration surface area. Mechanical filtration through filter socks or media reactors handles particulate matter. Chromis do well with moderate flow from powerheads or wavemakers, which mimics the current-swept reef environments they come from and keeps food suspended in the water column where they prefer to feed.
Live rock is both filtration and habitat for chromis. Arrange it to create open swimming lanes in the upper half of the tank while providing caves and overhangs the fish can retreat into when stressed. Avoid stacking rock all the way to the waterline, which eliminates the open water swimming space chromis need. A substrate of live sand or aragonite at one to two inches supports biological filtration and maintains alkalinity through slow dissolution.
Lighting depends on what else is in the tank rather than the chromis themselves. They have no specific lighting requirements and adapt to everything from basic LED fixtures to high-output reef lighting designed for demanding corals. If anything, very intense lighting can make chromis less visible since they tend to retreat from the brightest areas. Moderate lighting or a tank with some shaded zones gives you the best combination of coral growth and fish visibility.
A tight-fitting lid or mesh screen top is worth considering since chromis occasionally jump, particularly when startled or during aggressive chasing within the school. This is more common in smaller tanks where stressed subordinate fish have limited escape routes. Adequate circulation, stable temperature through a quality heater and potentially a chiller in warm climates, and consistent salinity through an auto top-off system to replace evaporated water round out the essential equipment.
Section 4 Diet And Feeding
Chromis are planktivores in the wild, feeding on zooplankton carried past the reef by currents. This translates to an easy-to-feed fish in captivity that readily accepts a wide range of prepared, frozen, and live foods. Their willingness to eat practically anything offered is one of the traits that makes them beginner-friendly, but a varied diet produces noticeably healthier, more colorful fish than feeding the same flake food every day.
A good staple is a quality marine pellet or flake food formulated for omnivorous reef fish. Look for foods where whole marine proteins appear as the first several ingredients rather than fillers and grain-based binders. Pellets that stay suspended in the water column or sink slowly work better than rapidly sinking foods since chromis feed most naturally in mid-water. Multiple small feedings throughout the day match their natural grazing behavior better than one large daily feeding.
Frozen foods should be a regular part of the diet. Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp enriched with vitamins, finely chopped krill, and cyclops all provide excellent nutrition and variety. Thaw frozen foods in a small cup of tank water before adding them to prevent temperature shock and to rinse away any packing liquid. Many reef keepers target feed their corals with similar foods, so the chromis often get supplemental feeding during coral feeding sessions as well.
Feed two to three times daily in amounts the school consumes within a couple of minutes. Chromis are active feeders that will chase food through the water column, making them fun to watch at feeding time. In a reef tank with corals and other invertebrates, some leftover food gets consumed by cleanup crew members, but consistent overfeeding leads to elevated nitrate and phosphate levels that cause algae problems. Watch the fish during feeding to gauge appropriate portions.
New chromis typically begin eating within a day or two of introduction, which is faster than many marine species. If a chromis is not eating after three days, something else is likely wrong - either water quality issues, harassment from tankmates, or illness from the stress of collection and shipping. A fish that is hiding and refusing food needs the underlying problem addressed, not more food thrown at it.
Section 5 Behavior And Compatibility
Chromis are among the most peaceful marine fish available, which is notable because their damselfish relatives are among the most aggressive. In a reef tank, chromis spend their day schooling in the mid to upper water column, hovering above rockwork, and picking zooplankton from the current. Their movement is constant and adds a dynamic quality to the tank that static territorial fish do not provide. They are active during the day and settle into sheltered spots within the rockwork at night.
Schooling behavior is the main reason people keep chromis, and group size matters. A school of five is the minimum, but groups of seven or more display more natural behavior and tend to distribute aggression more evenly. Odd numbers are often recommended because even-numbered groups sometimes split into pairs that then compete, though this is more guideline than hard rule. The school will have a dominant individual, and some sparring and chasing is normal as the hierarchy sorts itself out.
The aggression issue with chromis is real but often overstated by fishkeepers who expect zero conflict. Chromis establish pecking orders, and the lowest-ranking fish in a small group can be persistently harassed to the point of stress, disease, and death. This is the main reason schools sometimes shrink over time. Starting with more fish, providing adequate tank space, and ensuring plenty of sight line breaks in the rockwork all help reduce this problem. It is not a reason to avoid chromis, but it is a reality to prepare for.
Chromis are compatible with the vast majority of reef tank inhabitants. They mix well with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, blennies, gobies, cardinalfish, and most other common reef species. They leave corals and invertebrates alone, making them fully reef-safe. Their peaceful nature means they are often targeted by aggressive species, so avoid housing them with territorial damselfish, large dottybacks, or aggressive triggers and wrasses that will bully them.
The fish to be cautious about are predators large enough to eat them. Lionfish, groupers, large hawkfish, and similar predatory species view chromis as food, which is exactly their ecological role on natural reefs. In a community reef tank with appropriately sized peaceful to semi-aggressive species, chromis fit perfectly and rarely cause problems with tankmates.
Breeding chromis in home aquariums is uncommon but does occur occasionally. Males prepare nest sites on flat rock surfaces and court females with color changes and swimming displays. Eggs are guarded by the male until hatching, and the male becomes noticeably territorial during this period, which can disrupt the otherwise peaceful school dynamic. Raising the larvae requires specialized equipment and live food cultures, putting successful captive breeding beyond most hobby setups.
Section 6 Health And Lifespan
Chromis typically live six to eight years in well-maintained marine aquariums, with some individuals reaching beyond ten years under excellent conditions. This is a solid lifespan for a small reef fish and represents a meaningful commitment. The biggest factor in reaching that potential is stable water quality - chromis that survive the initial acclimation and hierarchy sorting tend to be quite hardy long-term residents once settled.
The most common health issues are marine ich, also called cryptocaryon, and bacterial infections that appear after shipping stress or poor water quality. Marine ich presents as white spots on the body and fins, and it spreads rapidly in reef tanks where copper-based treatments cannot be used without killing invertebrates. This makes quarantining new chromis in a separate tank for four to six weeks before adding them to the display reef critically important, even though many keepers skip this step. Brooklynella and velvet are less common but more dangerous diseases that also reinforce the quarantine argument.
Healthy chromis display bright, consistent coloration with clear eyes and intact fins. They swim actively with the school during the day, feed eagerly, and show no signs of rapid breathing, spots, cloudiness, or frayed fins. A chromis that separates from the school, hides constantly, breathes rapidly, or develops any visible spots or discoloration needs attention. In a school, the first fish to show signs of stress is often the lowest-ranking individual being harassed by the group.
Preventive care centers on stable water quality and proper quarantine procedures. Weekly water changes of ten to fifteen percent maintain trace elements and dilute accumulated waste. Test water parameters regularly, especially in newer tanks where chemistry is still stabilizing. Maintain stable salinity through an auto top-off system, since evaporation concentrates salt in marine tanks and fluctuating salinity stresses all inhabitants. Feed a varied diet to support immune function, and avoid overstocking, which degrades water quality and increases disease transmission.
When illness appears, act quickly. Marine diseases progress faster than freshwater diseases in many cases, and a fish that shows symptoms today may be in serious trouble by tomorrow. If you have a quarantine tank, move affected fish there for treatment. If the disease appears across multiple fish simultaneously, the problem is almost certainly environmental - test water parameters and correct any issues. Prevention through quarantine, stable parameters, and appropriate stocking is always easier than treating disease in an established reef tank.
