Fill the media baskets according to the manufacturer's design. Usually the bottom basket gets your mechanical media—fine sponge that catches visible particles. The middle basket gets your biological media, which is where beneficial bacteria colonize. The top basket can be additional sponge or carbon if you want to remove odors or medications. Don't overstuff the baskets because water needs to flow through them, not around them. Media should be snug but not compressed.

Connect the intake and output tubes. The intake tube has a strainer that prevents large debris from entering the canister. Most people put the intake tube in the tank away from the output tube to create circulation. The output tube returns filtered water. Make sure both tubes are secure and don't have kinks in them. Kinked hoses reduce flow and put stress on the motor. If your tubes aren't quite long enough, you can buy extension tubing at any aquarium store.

Fill the canister with tank water before you turn it on. Most canisters need to be primed—basically filled with water so the siphon action works. Do this slowly and carefully. Open the vent valve on top of the canister if it has one to let air escape as you fill. Once it's full, close the vent valve and plug in the motor. Water should start flowing immediately. Let it run for a few minutes and check for leaks around the seals and hose connections. A small weep is normal when you first start, but if water is actively dripping, something isn't seated properly.

Section 5 Maintenance Requirements

Canister filters need maintenance every two to four weeks depending on your stocking level. Heavy bioload tanks need more frequent maintenance. The first sign you need to clean is reduced flow—water comes out more slowly than it used to. You might also notice slightly dirtier water despite the filter running. That's your media getting clogged with debris. Don't wait until flow drops to almost nothing because that's working the motor hard and reducing efficiency.

When you clean the canister, turn it off and let the pressure release. Most canisters have a relief valve you open before you disconnect anything. This prevents water from draining out of the hoses. Disconnect the intake and output tubes. You can do this over a bucket or in the bathtub depending on how much water is in the lines. Some people like to drain the canister first by opening the drain valve, which is smart if your canister has one.

Carry the canister to a sink or bucket. Open the media chamber and remove the baskets one by one. Rinse the mechanical media in the tank water you brought with you, not in tap water. This removes the trapped debris without killing the beneficial bacteria. Squeeze it gently until the water runs mostly clear. The biological media needs very gentle handling—rinse it lightly in tank water, barely squeezing it. You're not trying to get it pristine. You're just removing gross debris. Killing the bacteria in this media defeats the whole point of the canister.

While the media is out, inspect the canister walls and hose connections for algae or buildup. A soft brush or old toothbrush works fine for cleaning these. Check the seals and gaskets for cracks or hardening. If they're deteriorating, order replacements before you reassemble. Reassemble the baskets in order, fill the canister with tank water, and reconnect it to the tank. Prime it the same way you did during initial setup.

Replace the fine mechanical sponge every three to six months depending on your water clarity. This media gets the dirtiest and doesn't need to maintain a bacterial colony the way biological media does. The biological media lasts a year or more before you need to think about replacing it. Carbon only needs replacing if you're using it to remove medications or odors. Otherwise, it accumulates debris and becomes less effective over six months or so. Don't replace everything at once—replace media types one at a time so your bacterial colony stays established.

Section 6 Common Mistakes

The biggest mistake people make is undersizing the canister. They figure a smaller, cheaper model will work fine and upgrade later if needed. What actually happens is they get frustrated with reduced water clarity, more frequent maintenance, and reduced flow. They end up buying a bigger canister anyway after wasting money on the small one. Start with something appropriately sized for your actual tank volume and bioload. You'll save money and grief.

Another common error is not maintaining the canister regularly. People install them, notice they work great, and assume they'll just keep working great forever. Then six months later the flow is terrible and the water is cloudy. Maintenance every three to four weeks prevents this entirely. It's maybe thirty minutes of work. Not maintaining is like changing your car's oil every two years instead of on schedule—eventually everything fails at once.

Not priming the canister correctly when you first set it up is frustrating. If you don't get all the air out of the chamber, it can cause the filter to lose its siphon and stop working. Using tap water to rinse media is surprisingly common and a genuine mistake. Tap water chemicals kill beneficial bacteria. You want to rinse media in tank water because that preserves the bacterial colony. This is the difference between maintenance that takes five minutes and maintenance that requires re-establishing your entire bacterial colony over two weeks. Always rinse in tank water.
