Care difficulty falls solidly in the intermediate range, primarily because maintaining stable salinity adds a management layer that freshwater does not require. You need a hydrometer or refractometer to monitor specific gravity, marine salt mix to adjust salinity, and enough understanding of your species to know where in the brackish spectrum they belong. Some individual puffers coexist peacefully in community tanks while others terrorize everything in sight, and there is no reliable way to predict which you will get. Many experienced brackish keepers house green spotted puffers in species-only setups to avoid the gamble entirely. Figure eight puffers are somewhat more manageable but still nippy enough to cause problems with slow-moving or long-finned tankmates.

Compatible brackish communities typically combine monos, scats, and archerfish in large tanks where all species have room to swim and establish comfort zones. Mollies work well as dither fish in brackish setups and are hardy enough to handle the salinity range. Target fish and Colombian shark catfish are sometimes kept in brackish communities but grow large and need tanks sized accordingly. Avoid mixing drastically different salinity preferences - a species that needs 1.005 and one that thrives at 1.015 cannot share optimal conditions.

Tankmates to avoid include anything small enough for puffers to eat, slow-moving fish with flowing fins that invite nipping, and freshwater species that cannot tolerate salt. Keeping freshwater community fish like tetras or rasboras in brackish conditions is not a compatibility option - it is cruelty that slowly kills them through osmotic stress.

Breeding behavior in brackish tanks is uncommon for most species in captivity, with mollies being the notable exception since they breed prolifically in almost any conditions. Monos and scats rarely breed in home aquariums due to their size requirements and complex reproductive biology. Puffers have been bred in captivity but it requires dedicated setups and specific salinity manipulation. Beyond salinity issues, brackish fish are susceptible to the same diseases as other tropical fish - ich, bacterial infections, fungal problems, and parasitic infestations. Puffers are particularly prone to internal parasites, especially wild-caught specimens that should be treated prophylactically during quarantine. Ich treatment in brackish tanks requires attention to the existing salt content, as many ich medications interact with salinity and dosing needs adjustment.

A healthy brackish fish shows bright, consistent coloring, active behavior appropriate to its species, a good appetite, and clear eyes and fins without lesions or discoloration. Puffers should have rounded bellies and bright patterns. Monos and scats should be actively swimming in their group. Any fish that becomes listless, loses color, stops eating, or develops visible spots, patches, or fin damage needs immediate attention.

Preventive care means maintaining stable salinity and temperature, performing regular water changes with properly mixed brackish water, and quarantining all new additions for two to three weeks before introducing them to an established tank. Keep a refractometer handy and check specific gravity weekly, because evaporation concentrates salt and raises salinity gradually between water changes.
