Beyond ich, Blue Tangs are vulnerable to head and lateral line erosion, a condition that produces pitting and tissue loss along the sensory lines of the head and body. This condition is strongly linked to nutritional deficiency, poor water quality, and the use of activated carbon filtration, though the exact mechanism is still debated among marine hobbyists. Maintaining a varied, algae-heavy diet and pristine water conditions significantly reduces the risk.
A healthy Blue Tang is a vivid, deeply saturated blue with clean yellow on the tail and clear, alert eyes. The fish should be constantly active during the day, eating eagerly and interacting with its environment.
