The aquarium hobby features both marine and brackish water blennies, with the marine species being far more commonly kept. Popular species include the Bicolor Blenny, Tailspot Blenny, Midas Blenny, Lawnmower Blenny, and various species of Ecsenius blennies that have become staples in reef and marine community tanks. Each species has its own character, but they share a common appeal - they are bottom-dwelling perching fish with big personalities packed into relatively small bodies.

Care difficulty varies by species but generally sits at the intermediate level. Most blennies are hardy once established in a suitable aquarium, but they have specific needs regarding territory, diet, and tankmate compatibility that require some understanding beyond basic fish care. Many species are algae grazers that need either natural algae growth or supplemental vegetable-based foods. Their territorial nature, while entertaining, means you need to plan around it rather than assume they will coexist peacefully with everything.

Tank requirements vary by species, but most common aquarium blennies need at least 30 gallons with plenty of live rock providing perching spots, hiding holes, and grazing surfaces. They are predominantly marine fish requiring full saltwater parameters, though a few species live in brackish environments. Most stay under six inches, making them suitable for moderately sized reef and fish-only marine setups.

Before buying any blenny, research the specific species thoroughly. The group is so diverse that generalizations can be misleading. Ecologically, blennies fill a range of niches depending on the species. Many combtooth blennies are herbivores or detritivores that graze algae and organic film from rock surfaces, playing an important role in controlling algae growth on reefs. Others are omnivores or specialized feeders - fang blennies, for instance, have enlarged canine teeth and some species are known for mimicking other fish to get close enough to bite scales or mucus from unsuspecting targets. The grazing species are the ones most commonly kept in aquariums, where their algae-eating habits make them both functionally useful and entertaining to watch as they methodically work their way across rock surfaces throughout the day.

Many popular aquarium blennies are still primarily wild-caught, though captive-bred specimens are becoming increasingly available for common species like the Bicolor Blenny and some Ecsenius species. Wild-caught blennies generally adapt well to aquarium life because the conditions they need are straightforward to provide - warm saltwater, live rock, and a territory to call home. The transition from reef to aquarium is usually smoother for blennies than for many other marine species, provided adequate rockwork is available from day one.

For aquarium keepers, the habitat information translates into one clear principle - blennies need structure. A tank with live rock full of holes, ledges, and crevices is essential. Open sandy bottom with no rockwork is essentially a barren wasteland from a blenny's perspective. Their entire lifestyle revolves around having surfaces to perch on, graze from, and retreat into, and providing this in your aquarium is the non-negotiable foundation of successful blenny keeping.

Section 3 Tank Requirements And Setup

Tank size requirements depend on the species, but 30 gallons is a reasonable minimum for most commonly kept blennies. Smaller species like Tailspot Blennies can work in tanks as small as 20 gallons, while larger species like Lawnmower Blennies or Starry Blennies do better in 55 gallons or more due to their size and the grazing territory they need to maintain body condition. The tank shape matters less than the amount of available rockwork and bottom area, since blennies are not open-water swimmers and rarely use the upper water column.

Water parameters should match standard marine aquarium conditions. Temperature between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, specific gravity between 1.020 and 1.025, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, and ammonia and nitrite at zero. Most blennies are reef-compatible and thrive in the stable conditions that a well-maintained reef tank provides. Nitrates should be kept below 20 parts per million, and while blennies are reasonably tolerant of minor fluctuations, consistent conditions produce better long-term results.

Filtration and flow should match the overall tank setup. In a reef system with a protein skimmer and live rock filtration, blennies do well with the moderate to strong flow that corals prefer. Species from rubble zones and protected reef areas may prefer slightly calmer spots, while those from exposed reef faces are comfortable in stronger current. Providing some variation in flow throughout the tank lets the blenny choose where it is most comfortable.

Live rock is the single most important element in a blenny tank. It provides territory, hiding spots, perching surfaces, and grazing area all in one. Arrange rock with plenty of small caves, crevices, and ledges at various heights. Blennies will choose a specific hole or crevice as their home base and return to it consistently, so having multiple options prevents territorial disputes with other bottom-dwelling species. A blenny without a suitable home base will remain stressed and may become targets for other fish.

Substrate can be sand, crushed coral, or bare bottom depending on the rest of the tank design. Most blennies spend their time on rock rather than substrate, so the bottom material matters less to them than it does to sand-sifting species. Moderate lighting is typical in reef setups and suits blennies well - they are not light-sensitive but appreciate the areas of shadow created by rock overhangs where they can sit and survey their territory.

A tight-fitting lid or screen top is essential. Blennies are notorious jumpers, and experienced marine keepers will tell you they have lost blennies to carpet surfing, especially in the first few days after introduction when the fish is stressed and exploring tank boundaries. Cover every opening, including small gaps around equipment, overflow boxes, and cord pass-throughs. This is not a risk you can afford to ignore with this group.

Section 4 Diet And Feeding

Diet is one area where blenny species diverge significantly, so knowing what you are keeping is essential. The most commonly kept blennies fall into two broad dietary categories - the herbivores and grazers like Lawnmower Blennies, and the omnivores like Bicolor Blennies and Midas Blennies. Getting the diet right for your specific species is one of the most important aspects of blenny care and the area where keepers are most likely to make mistakes.

Herbivorous blennies like the Lawnmower Blenny (Salarias fasciatus) need substantial algae in their diet. In tanks with abundant natural algae growth on live rock, they may graze contentedly all day and stay well-fed without supplemental feeding. In cleaner tanks with less natural growth, you will need to provide nori sheets, spirulina-based prepared foods, or other vegetable-rich options. A Lawnmower Blenny in a pristine tank with no algae and only meaty foods offered will slowly decline - this is a common failure point that keepers need to anticipate before bringing one home.

Omnivorous blennies accept a wider range of foods and are generally easier to feed. Quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood all work well. These species still benefit from some plant-based food in the rotation, but they are not dependent on it the way obligate grazers are. Midas Blennies in particular are enthusiastic eaters that learn feeding routines quickly and will come to the surface for food with almost aggressive enthusiasm.

Feed small amounts once or twice daily for omnivorous species. Herbivorous grazers should ideally have access to algae-covered surfaces throughout the day, supplemented with nori or prepared algae foods if natural growth is insufficient. Watch body condition carefully - a blenny with a sunken belly is not getting enough food, and this happens more often with grazers in algae-poor tanks than keepers realize.

One practical note - blennies new to a tank sometimes refuse prepared foods initially, especially wild-caught specimens accustomed to natural grazing. Patience and offering a variety of food types usually resolves this within a week or two. Having some natural algae growth available during the transition gives the fish something familiar to eat while it learns to accept what you are offering.

Section 5 Behavior And Compatibility

Blennies are territorial fish, and understanding this is key to keeping them successfully. Most species claim a small area of rock as their personal territory and will defend it vigorously against other blennies and sometimes against other bottom-dwelling species that venture too close. This territorial behavior is not constant aggression - it is more like a homeowner who is friendly with the neighbors but does not want anyone walking into the living room uninvited. Outside their immediate territory, most blennies ignore other fish entirely.

The general rule with blennies in community tanks is one blenny per tank unless the setup is large enough to provide clearly separated territories with distinct rock formations. Two blennies of the same species in a 30-gallon tank is almost always a recipe for harassment, with the dominant individual driving the subordinate into hiding, stress, and eventual decline. In tanks of 75 gallons or larger with abundant rockwork creating distinct zones, keeping two different blenny species can work, but keeping two of the same species remains risky unless you are attempting a breeding pair in a dedicated setup.

Day-to-day behavior is entertaining and one of the main reasons people keep blennies. They perch on rocks with their heads poking out of crevices, watching the tank with alert curiosity that gives them an almost dog-like appeal. They hop between perching spots with quick darting movements, graze methodically along rock surfaces, and react to activity outside the tank in ways that many fish simply do not. Their expressive faces and high-set eyes contribute to an impression of awareness and personality that makes them feel more interactive than a typical fish.

Good tankmates for blennies include most reef-safe community fish that occupy different areas of the water column. Clownfish, wrasses, firefish, anthias, tangs, and most small to medium marine fish coexist well with blennies as long as they do not compete for the same bottom territory. Peaceful gobies can work in larger tanks where both species have enough rock to establish separate territories, but in smaller setups the overlap in habitat preference can create conflict.

Avoid housing blennies with aggressive bottom-dwelling species like large dottybacks, hawkfish, or territorial damselfish that will compete for rock territory and may bully the blenny into permanent hiding. Other blennies of the same species should be avoided unless breeding is the specific goal.

Breeding in community tanks occasionally occurs with established pairs but is uncommon. Males typically prepare a nest site inside a crevice and court females with color changes and displays. Eggs are deposited in the nest and guarded by the male until hatching. In a reef community, fry survival is essentially zero due to predation, but the courtship and nesting behavior is fascinating to observe when it happens.

Section 6 Health And Lifespan

Most commonly kept blennies live between four and eight years in captivity, with species and care quality being the primary variables. Smaller species tend toward the shorter end while larger, well-cared-for specimens can reach the upper range or occasionally beyond. Blennies are generally hardy fish once established in a suitable environment, and many of the health problems keepers encounter trace back to inadequate diet or territorial stress rather than inherent fragility.

The most common health concern specific to blennies is nutritional decline in herbivorous species kept in tanks without sufficient algae. A Lawnmower Blenny that slowly loses body condition over months is almost certainly not getting enough of the right food. This is a gradual process that sneaks up on keepers who do not regularly assess body condition. Beyond dietary issues, blennies are susceptible to the standard marine fish diseases including ich (cryptocaryon), marine velvet, and bacterial infections, though they are not particularly prone to any of these compared to other marine species.

A healthy blenny is active, alert, and perched prominently on its favorite rock or peering out from its home crevice. It should respond to movement outside the tank, graze or feed readily, and maintain good body condition with a filled-out belly and smooth, intact skin. Coloring should be vibrant and consistent for the species. Watch for signs of stress including constant hiding, food refusal, rapid breathing, faded color, or visible lesions on the skin.

Preventive care follows standard marine aquarium best practices. Maintain stable water parameters, perform regular water changes, and avoid sudden environmental changes. Quarantine new fish for at least two weeks before adding them to an established tank. For herbivorous species, ensure adequate algae availability by supplementing with nori or algae-based prepared foods whenever natural growth cannot keep up with the fish's grazing.

Blennies can decline quickly when subjected to chronic territorial stress from aggressive tankmates. A blenny that is being bullied will stop eating, lose color, hide constantly, and become vulnerable to disease. If you see these signs and can identify another fish as the cause, separating them is far more effective than hoping the situation resolves on its own. The territorial instinct that makes blennies so entertaining also means they take boundary violations seriously, and a fish that cannot establish and maintain a secure home territory will not thrive no matter how good the water quality is.
