The absolute rule for black moor compatibility is that they should only be housed with other similarly handicapped fancy goldfish varieties. This means other telescope-eyed fish, bubble eyes, celestial eyes, and slow-bodied fancies like ranchus and lionheads. These fish share the same physical limitations and compete for food on roughly equal footing. Housing a black moor with common goldfish, comets, or shubunkins is asking for problems because those single-tailed varieties are dramatically faster, more agile, and will dominate at feeding time while the moor slowly tries to locate food it cannot see clearly.
Tropical fish are entirely inappropriate tankmates regardless of temperament. The temperature requirements do not overlap comfortably, and mixing cold-water goldfish with tropical species compromises both. Fin nippers of any kind are especially dangerous because the black moor's flowing fins and slow speed make it an easy target that cannot escape harassment.
Other compatible companions include mystery snails and nerite snails, which coexist peacefully and help with algae management. Some keepers successfully house white cloud mountain minnows or weather loaches with goldfish since they share the cooler temperature preference, but the size difference and feeding competition should be considered carefully.
Black moors can exhibit breeding behavior in home aquariums when conditions trigger it, typically in spring or when a water change simulates seasonal change.
