The appeal of banjo catfish is not about flashy color or active swimming. These are fish for keepers who appreciate the weird, the subtle, and the genuinely unusual. Watching a banjo catfish bury itself in sand until only its eyes are visible, then ambush a passing worm with a sudden lunge, is the kind of behavior that no amount of neon tetras can replicate. They attract fishkeepers who have already kept the common species and want something that offers a completely different experience. The fact that they look like something out of a science fiction movie does not hurt either.

Care difficulty sits in the intermediate range, not because the fish is demanding about water chemistry, but because its lifestyle requires specific conditions that beginners might not anticipate. Banjo catfish are almost entirely nocturnal, they eat food off the bottom that other fish often miss, and they can go unnoticed for so long that keepers sometimes assume they have died. Successfully keeping them means providing the right substrate for burrowing, understanding their feeding needs, and accepting that you may not see your fish for days at a time. If you need a pet that performs on command, this is not it. If you appreciate knowing something fascinating is happening in your tank even when you cannot see it, the banjo catfish delivers.

A single banjo catfish does well in a 20-gallon tank with a soft sand substrate, some driftwood and leaf litter for cover, and calm to moderate water flow. They prefer temperatures between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, a pH of 6.0 to 8.0, and soft to moderately hard water. These are not social fish that need groups, though they tolerate each other perfectly well when space allows. A pair or trio in a 30-gallon tank coexists without issue.

Before bringing one home, know that banjo catfish are masters of disappearing. They burrow into sand, wedge themselves under driftwood, and hold so still that their camouflage becomes essentially perfect. New keepers sometimes panic after not seeing the fish for a week, only to discover it buried contentedly in the sand. They also have very specific feeding needs. Sinking foods delivered after lights out are essential because these fish will rarely, if ever, compete for food at the surface. Patience and an understanding of nocturnal behavior are the real requirements for keeping this species.

Flow is gentle, often barely perceptible, and the bottom is a complex layer of organic material that provides both food and camouflage. This is not a clean, polished riverbed. It is a rich, messy environment where the line between substrate and inhabitant blurs completely.

Banjo catfish have been available in the aquarium trade for decades, though they have never achieved mainstream popularity the way community staples like corydoras or plecos have. They are almost always wild-caught, as commercial breeding efforts have been limited. Spawning does occur in home aquariums, but it is infrequent and the fish scatter their eggs across the substrate rather than providing parental care, so fry survival without intervention is low. The trade relies primarily on wild collection from Amazonian tributaries, and availability in local fish stores tends to be sporadic rather than consistent.

Replicating the banjo catfish's natural habitat in the aquarium is the single most important thing you can do for this species. Fine sand substrate deep enough for burrowing, at least two inches, is non-negotiable. Dried leaf litter, particularly Indian almond leaves or oak leaves, provides both cover and a natural food source as they decompose and support microfauna. Driftwood and dim lighting complete the picture. Keepers who set up bare-bottom tanks with bright lights and strong flow will have stressed, hiding fish that never settle in. Match the environment, and you get to see the real behavior.

Section 3 Tank Requirements And Setup

A 20-gallon tank is adequate for a single banjo catfish or a pair, with a 30-gallon or larger being preferable if you want to keep a small group of three or four alongside other bottom-dwelling community fish. Tank footprint matters more than height with this species since they are strictly bottom dwellers that never venture into the upper water column. A standard 20-gallon long with its extended floor space gives a single banjo catfish more usable territory than a tall 20-gallon with the same volume.

Water parameters for banjo catfish are relatively flexible, which is one of the genuinely easy aspects of keeping them. They tolerate temperatures from 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, though 75 to 79 is the comfort zone for long-term health. The pH can range from 6.0 to 8.0, with slightly acidic to neutral being ideal. Water hardness from 2 to 20 dGH is acceptable, and they do well in both soft Amazonian-style setups and moderately hard tap water. The critical parameter is not any single number but stability. Consistent conditions matter more than hitting a specific target.

Filtration should be effective but gentle. Banjo catfish live on the bottom in still or near-still water, and strong filter outflow directed along the substrate will stress them. A hang-on-back filter with an adjustable flow rate or a sponge filter works well for smaller tanks. For larger setups, a canister filter with the output directed toward the surface or diffused through a spray bar keeps the bottom calm. Size the filtration for the whole tank's bioload, but make sure the bottom remains a low-flow zone. These fish will not thrive in a river manifold setup with current pushing across the sand.

Substrate is the most critical setup element for banjo catfish. Fine, smooth sand is the only appropriate choice. They bury themselves partially or completely in the substrate as their primary behavior, and anything coarse, sharp, or too heavy for them to push through defeats the purpose. Play sand, pool filter sand, or aquarium-specific fine sand all work. Avoid gravel, crushed coral, or any substrate with sharp edges that could damage the fish's soft underside as it burrows. A depth of two to three inches gives them room to dig in properly. This is not a decoration choice. It is a care requirement.

Hardscape and cover should lean heavily toward creating the kind of cluttered, organic environment the fish inhabits in the wild. Driftwood pieces laid along the bottom provide shelter and visual complexity. Dried leaf litter scattered across the sand creates hiding spots, tints the water with beneficial tannins, and supports the microfauna that banjo catfish snack on between scheduled feedings. Indian almond leaves, oak leaves, and magnolia leaves all work well. Replace them as they decompose fully, roughly every four to six weeks. Add a few rounded river stones for additional variety, but keep the overall aesthetic organic rather than architectural.

Lighting should be subdued for banjo catfish. These are nocturnal fish that become active after dark, and bright lighting keeps them buried and inactive during the hours you are most likely to observe them. Floating plants like water lettuce, frogbit, or salvinia filter light naturally and create the dim conditions the fish prefers. If you want live rooted plants, low-light species like java fern, anubias, and cryptocoryne do well in the same dim conditions the catfish enjoys. Avoid high-intensity planted tank lighting unless you provide significant shade through floating plants or overhanging hardscape. A tight-fitting lid is a good practice, though banjo catfish are not jumpers. The lid primarily prevents other tank inhabitants from escaping and maintains humidity.

Section 4 Diet And Feeding

In the wild, banjo catfish are opportunistic ambush feeders that eat whatever small invertebrates, larvae, and worms wander within striking range of their buried position. They do not forage actively or pursue prey. They wait, often for hours, and then strike with a sudden vacuum-like gulp that sucks in anything close enough to be caught. Understanding this feeding style is essential because it explains why conventional aquarium feeding methods do not always work for them.

The staple diet in captivity should consist of sinking foods that reach the bottom and stay there. Frozen bloodworms, frozen tubifex worms, and frozen brine shrimp are all excellent primary foods. Sinking pellets and wafers designed for bottom feeders work once the fish learns to accept them, but many banjo catfish initially prefer live or frozen foods over prepared options. High-quality sinking catfish pellets with fish or shrimp meal as the primary ingredient can become a dietary staple over time, but introduce them alongside familiar frozen foods rather than expecting immediate acceptance.

Supplemental live foods offer the best feeding response from banjo catfish because they trigger the natural ambush behavior. Live blackworms are arguably the single best food for this species. Dropped onto the sand, they burrow slightly and wriggle, which is exactly the kind of movement that activates a banjo catfish's feeding instinct. Live tubifex worms, white worms, and small earthworm pieces also work well. If live foods are not readily available, frozen alternatives are perfectly adequate for long-term nutrition. The key is variety rather than relying on any single food source.

Feeding should happen after lights out, which matches the fish's natural activity period. Drop sinking foods directly onto the substrate near the fish's known hiding spots once the tank is dark. Banjo catfish do not compete for food and will not surface to feed, so anything that floats or gets intercepted in the mid-water column by other fish is wasted. Feed two to three times per week for adults rather than daily, as these are slow-metabolism fish that do not eat large volumes at a time. Overfeeding is a genuine risk because uneaten food buried in sand decomposes and degrades water quality, so offer only what the fish will consume in a few hours.

One important consideration is that banjo catfish are easy to accidentally starve in a busy community tank. They are so passive and so reluctant to compete that faster, more assertive fish eat everything before the catfish even emerges. If you keep banjo catfish in a community setting, monitor their body condition carefully. A healthy specimen has a filled-out body with no visible concavity behind the head. If the fish appears thin or the area between the head and body looks pinched, it is not getting enough food and you need to adjust your feeding strategy, either by target feeding with a pipette or by feeding the tank heavily enough that food consistently reaches the bottom.

Section 5 Behavior And Compatibility

The behavioral personality of a banjo catfish can be summarized in one word: patience. These fish are masters of stillness. They spend the vast majority of their time motionless on the substrate, partially or fully buried in sand, waiting with the kind of calm that makes a sleeping cat look hyperactive. Their activity pattern is strictly nocturnal. As lights go out, they emerge from their buried positions, methodically patrol the substrate for food, and then settle back into the sand before dawn. During daytime, finding them often requires careful inspection of the substrate itself, looking for the subtle outline of a fish that has become one with the sand.

Banjo catfish are solitary by nature but not territorial. They do not interact socially with each other in any meaningful way, and multiple specimens in the same tank simply coexist as separate individuals sharing the same space. There is no schooling behavior, no hierarchy, and no aggression between them. If two banjo catfish end up buried next to each other, they ignore each other completely. This makes them easy to keep in groups if you want multiple specimens, but it also means you do not gain any behavioral enrichment from keeping them together. One fish gives you the same experience as four.

Aggression is not a word that applies to banjo catfish in any practical sense. They do not defend territory, they do not chase other fish, and they do not even acknowledge the existence of their tankmates most of the time. The only predatory behavior they display is the feeding strike, which is directed at small invertebrates and worms rather than other fish. Even small fish swimming directly over a buried banjo catfish are safe. This absolute peacefulness makes them compatible with nearly anything that will not eat them.

Ideal tankmates are peaceful community fish that occupy the mid to upper water column and will not harass a slow, defenseless bottom dweller. Tetras, rasboras, peaceful gouramis, and small rainbowfish all work well because they stay above the banjo catfish's zone and ignore it completely. Corydoras catfish and other peaceful bottom dwellers can share the substrate without conflict. Otocinclus, kuhli loaches, and small plecos are all compatible. The banjo catfish's indifference to its neighbors means virtually any non-aggressive fish is a viable companion.

The fish to avoid are large or aggressive species that might view the banjo catfish as food or a target for harassment. Large cichlids, aggressive catfish like red-tail cats or shovelnose, and any predatory species big enough to swallow a three to five inch flat fish should be excluded. Also avoid highly competitive bottom feeders that could outcompete the banjo catfish for food, which is the more realistic threat in most community tanks. The concern is less about aggression toward the banjo catfish and more about ensuring it can actually eat.

Breeding behavior in banjo catfish is infrequent in home aquariums but does occur, typically triggered by a large water change with slightly cooler water that simulates rainy season flooding. The female scatters adhesive eggs across the substrate and hardscape, and neither parent provides any care after spawning. Eggs hatch in a few days, and the tiny fry are vulnerable to predation from every other fish in the tank. Successful breeding requires either a dedicated species tank or removing eggs to a separate container for hatching. The spawning event itself is brief and usually happens in complete darkness, so keepers who have witnessed it consider themselves fortunate.

Banjo catfish typically live five to eight years in captivity, with some specimens reportedly reaching ten years or more under excellent conditions. Their relatively long lifespan for a small catfish reflects their slow metabolism and sedentary lifestyle. Fish that receive a varied diet, live in stable water conditions with appropriate substrate for burrowing, and are kept free from chronic stress consistently reach the upper end of that range. Conversely, fish kept on gravel substrate without hiding spots, subjected to bright lighting, or unable to feed properly decline much faster.

Common health issues in banjo catfish relate primarily to environmental stress and skin problems rather than specific diseases. Their rough, textured skin can develop bacterial infections if water quality slips, particularly if the substrate harbors excessive organic waste from overfeeding. Skin lesions, white patches, or fuzzy growths on the body indicate bacterial or fungal infection that usually traces back to poor substrate hygiene or a wound from sharp substrate material. Internal parasites are a concern with wild-caught specimens, which make up the majority of the trade, so quarantine and observation before adding them to an established community is important.

A healthy banjo catfish has intact, uniformly textured skin with no discolored patches, clear eyes that respond to movement even when the fish is stationary, and a body shape that appears filled out rather than pinched or concave. When disturbed from its resting position, it should respond with a purposeful movement to a new hiding spot rather than drifting passively or struggling to right itself. At night during active periods, healthy specimens methodically patrol the substrate with deliberate, controlled movement. Lethargy during nighttime hours, when the fish should be active, is a more telling warning sign than inactivity during the day, which is perfectly normal.

Preventive care centers on maintaining clean substrate, stable water parameters, and ensuring adequate nutrition reaches the fish. Vacuum the sand surface gently during water changes to remove accumulated waste without disturbing the deeper layers where the fish burrows. Maintain consistent temperature and pH rather than chasing specific numbers. Quarantine all new additions, especially other bottom dwellers, for a minimum of two weeks before introducing them to the tank. Replace decomposing leaf litter before it fully breaks down into sludge that degrades water quality. These are simple practices, but for a fish that lives in and on the substrate, substrate hygiene is the single biggest factor in long-term health.

When something goes wrong with a banjo catfish, the signs can be subtle because the fish's normal behavior already involves extended periods of motionlessness. Refusing food over multiple feeding sessions, visible skin deterioration, red streaking on the underside, or gasping behavior are all signals that require attention. Test water parameters immediately and perform a partial water change if anything is off. If the fish shows signs of external infection, isolate it in a hospital tank with clean water and mild antibacterial treatment. Because banjo catfish are scaleless, they are sensitive to many medications, particularly those containing copper or malachite green, so use half-strength dosing and monitor closely. Early intervention is critical because by the time a banjo catfish looks visibly sick, the problem has usually been developing for some time beneath its camouflaged exterior.
