You add the first nitrate reagent bottle, shake, then add the second nitrate reagent bottle, shake thoroughly for a minute, and then wait a minute more before comparing to the chart. This two-step process is slightly more involved than the ammonia and nitrite tests, but it's still straightforward. Nitrate will almost certainly not be zero, and that's fine. You're looking for levels below twenty or thirty parts per million. Higher nitrate means you need more water changes.
For pH, you add a different reagent to a fresh sample, let it sit for a minute or so, and compare the color to the pH chart. pH is important but not critical to control precisely. You're mostly watching for sudden shifts or chronic drifts that might indicate something wrong. Most freshwater community tanks do fine with pH between six and seven point five.
Once you've done all four tests, you have a complete picture of your tank chemistry. The whole process takes about five minutes once you're practiced. Keep a simple record of your test results so you can spot trends over time. This record is valuable because you can see whether your tank is improving, stable, or declining.
One important setup detail is to make sure you're testing water from your actual tank, not from treated tap water or from the water that's been sitting in your bucket. Take a sample directly from the tank with a clean cup or container, then test it immediately. This gives you accurate information about your tank's actual conditions.
Section 5 Maintenance Requirements
Maintaining your API test kit is mostly about keeping the reagent bottles in good condition and replacing them when they run out. The bottles have expiration dates, though if you store them properly in a cool, dark place and keep the caps tight, they last much longer than the printed expiration date suggests. Once you've been testing regularly for a while, you get a sense of how long each bottle lasts. Some bottles you'll use more frequently than others.
When a reagent bottle starts to run low, you notice that you're getting drops that seem to have less color change than they used to, or you're getting to the bottom of the bottle. That's your cue to order a replacement. You can buy individual replacement bottles or get refill kits that include all the bottles you need. The replacement bottles are inexpensive, usually a few dollars each. This keeps your testing costs low over time.
Clean your test tubes between tests by rinsing them thoroughly with tap water. You don't need to use tank water or distilled water. Tap water is fine for rinsing. Some people use the tube multiple times in a single testing session to test different parameters, so rinsing between tests prevents cross-contamination of the results. Dry the tubes or just let them air-dry between tests. If you're testing multiple times a day, you don't have to dry them completely; a quick rinse is fine.
The reagent bottles themselves need minimal maintenance. Keep the caps tight when not in use to prevent evaporation or contamination. If you notice a cap is loose or a seal looks damaged, that's a sign to check the bottle condition. Wipe the outside of the bottles occasionally if they get dusty or you spill something on them. The important thing is keeping the reagents inside protected from light and heat.
Store the color chart somewhere safe where you can reference it without losing it. Some people keep the chart in the kit box, others tape it to a cabinet door or take a photo of it for quick reference. You need to be able to compare your test tube colors to the chart accurately, so keeping the chart clean and easy to reference matters.
One maintenance task that people sometimes overlook is checking whether the reagents are still effective. If you notice that tests aren't giving clear color changes or the colors don't match the chart well, it might mean the reagents are old or degraded.
