Care difficulty for anthias is genuinely advanced, and underselling this does keepers a disservice. High-quality marine pellets in the smallest available size can supplement frozen feedings and provide convenience, but should not replace frozen foods as the dietary foundation. In a properly sized tank with enough individuals, this aggression stays distributed and manageable. Problems arise when groups are too small - a male with only one or two females may harass them to the point of exhaustion and death. Ideal tankmates for anthias include other peaceful to semi-aggressive reef fish that do not compete directly for the same food or water column space. Other planktivorous fish like chromis or fairy wrasses are compatible as long as the tank is large enough to support the combined bioload. Anthias generally ignore fish that stay near the bottom or in the rockwork, so the tankmate list is fairly broad.

The combinations to avoid include housing anthias with aggressive, territorial fish like large dottybacks, triggertriggerfish, or aggressive wrasses that may target anthias as intruders in their space. Mixing multiple anthias species can work in very large systems but often creates cross-species aggression in typical home aquarium volumes. Breeding behavior in community tanks is uncommon but not unheard of with established, well-fed groups. The biggest factor separating a three-year anthias from a seven-year one is consistent feeding frequency and water quality - these two elements predict longevity more reliably than anything else.

The most common health issue in captive anthias is starvation, and it often happens so gradually that keepers do not recognize it until the fish is dangerously thin. An anthias that is not getting enough food becomes progressively thinner, with the belly pinching inward behind the head and the body losing its rounded profile. Because anthias are active and may still swim normally even while slowly starving, the weight loss can advance significantly before the keeper notices. Checking body condition weekly by looking at the profile from above is a good habit. A healthy anthias is visually obvious. The fish maintains a station in the water column with smooth, controlled swimming rather than resting on the bottom or hiding in the rocks during the day. Preventing health problems in anthias comes back to the same fundamentals: feed frequently, maintain pristine water, and keep the social group properly structured.
