Some all-in-one systems use more traditional filter media like mechanical floss and biological media, which you can rinse in old tank water during water changes instead of replacing. This is actually better for the bacteria because you're not killing the biological filter colony every time you maintain it. If your system has this design, rinse the mechanical media every week or two and leave the biological media mostly alone unless it's visibly clogged.
Water changes are still essential even with an all-in-one system. The system filters out solids and helps convert waste, but it doesn't remove dissolved waste products like nitrates. You still need to do twenty to twenty-five percent water changes weekly for a lightly stocked tank, more for heavily stocked tanks. The all-in-one doesn't change this fundamental maintenance need.
Check the heater regularly if you have one. Make sure the temperature is stable where you've set it. If temperature starts fluctuating or drifting, the heater might be failing. Most heaters last a few years before they need replacing. It's not a major issue, but it's something to monitor.
Lighting usually requires less maintenance unless your light has fans for cooling, in which case you'd want to make sure the fans aren't clogging with dust. Most modern LED systems run for years without significant maintenance. If you notice the light getting dimmer over a long period, it's probably just normal LED dimming over time, and you might eventually want to upgrade to newer lighting with better performance.
Check seals and connections periodically for any signs of leaks or deterioration. All-in-one systems are sealed environments, so seals matter. If you notice any seepage or any silicone deteriorating, address it before it becomes a major problem.
Keep the filter intake clear so water can flow properly. Some systems have an intake that faces the tank, which can get blocked by plants or hardscape. Make sure nothing is blocking proper water intake. If flow rate seems to be dropping, the intake might be clogged, not just the filter media being dirty.
