The protein and nutrient requirements change significantly as birds move through different life stages, and ignoring those changes shows up as slower growth, health problems, leg issues, and poor production. The flip side is also true - overshooting protein targets with Broad-Breasted birds trying to push faster growth creates its own set of problems. Getting feed right means understanding what turkeys actually need at each stage, not just what is convenient or what is already in the chicken feed bin.

The most important thing to know going in is that turkey poults need more protein than chicken chicks. A standard chick starter at 18 to 20 percent protein is not adequate for young turkeys. Turkey poults need a starter at 28 to 30 percent protein for the first several weeks, and getting this wrong from day one means birds that fall behind developmentally in ways that are hard to make up later. This is not a corner you can cut and compensate for later. Start right.

Feed quality matters alongside feed type. Turkeys fed on musty, old, or improperly stored feed develop health problems that look like disease but are actually feed-related. Proper storage - dry, sealed containers or feeders that keep moisture and pests out - is part of the feeding program. Fresh feed delivered consistently beats a big pile of stale feed sitting in a leaky feeder every time.

There is also a real difference in feeding philosophy between raising Broad-Breasted birds for maximum growth efficiency and raising heritage breeds for a longer, more natural production cycle. Both approaches are valid and both are covered here. Understanding which category you are in lets you apply the right strategies rather than blending them in ways that serve neither goal well.

Section 2 Essential Requirements

Turkey feeding follows a staged program that shifts as birds age. Each stage has specific protein and energy requirements that align with the birds' developmental priorities at that point in their lives. Following this sequence is the foundation of good turkey feeding management.

Poults from hatch through week four or five need a turkey starter or gamebird starter at 28 to 30 percent protein. This high protein level supports the rapid development of muscle, bone, and organ tissue in young birds. At this stage, carbohydrate energy is less critical than protein density. Feed ad libitum - meaning always available - during this period. Young poults do not overeat in a way that causes problems; they need the access to fuel constant growth.

From roughly week four through week eight, you can transition to a grower ration at around 24 to 26 percent protein. The transition should be gradual over several days to avoid digestive upset - mixing the old and new feed in shifting proportions works well. At this stage birds are feathering out and putting on frame. The protein is still the priority driver but slightly less intense than in the starter phase.

From week eight through market or finish, the ration shifts again to a finisher or developer feed at around 20 to 22 percent protein. For Broad-Breasted birds being pushed toward harvest weight, a dedicated turkey finisher feed supports meat deposition efficiently. For heritage breeds in the grower phase, many keepers continue on a 20-percent developer feed for most of the production cycle, dropping to a maintenance level in the final weeks before harvest.

Breeding stock - heritage hens and toms being maintained for reproduction - have different needs than grow-out birds. They need a maintenance ration rather than a growth ration, supplemented appropriately in the weeks leading up to breeding season to support reproductive condition. A standard poultry breeder feed with good vitamin and mineral levels works well. Do not keep breeders on high-protein grower rations year-round; the excess protein is processed as waste by the liver and kidneys and creates unnecessary metabolic stress over time.

Calcium supplementation matters for laying hens. Turkey hens producing fertile eggs need more calcium than a standard maintenance ration provides. Oyster shell offered free choice alongside their regular feed lets hens self-regulate calcium intake. Do not mix calcium supplement into the feed for the whole flock including toms - excess calcium causes kidney problems in males.

Fresh, clean water is as much a part of feeding as the feed itself. Turkeys that are dehydrated do not eat properly, digest poorly, and grow slowly. Water and feed work together. In hot weather especially, inadequate water access will tank your feed conversion and put birds at risk quickly. Check waterers morning and evening and clean them regularly - algae and biofilm in warm water sources can carry pathogens.

Grit is not optional for turkeys eating whole grains or ranging on pasture. Insoluble grit - granite or similar coarse material - sits in the gizzard and helps grind feed. Birds raised entirely on commercial pelleted or crumbled feed may not need supplemental grit, but any turkey eating scratch grains, foraging vegetation, or consuming anything other than processed commercial feed should have access to appropriately sized grit.

Section 3 Daily Care And Management

Day-to-day feeding management is mostly about consistency and observation. Fill feeders at the same time each morning. Note how much the birds are eating relative to the previous day - a significant drop in feed consumption is often the first sign that something is off with the flock before any obvious physical symptoms appear. Healthy turkeys are enthusiastic and consistent eaters.

Feeder design affects how much feed gets wasted. Turkeys are not neat eaters and will fling feed out of shallow or wide-open trays. Tube feeders or feeders with anti-waste lips keep more feed where it belongs and reduce the amount of feed that hits the floor and gets contaminated. Feed that sits on wet, soiled litter develops mold and can cause crop and digestive problems.

For birds on pasture, remember that pasture consumption genuinely reduces commercial feed needs. A turkey on good grass and legume pasture with access to insects is getting real nutritional value from foraging. You should still provide commercial feed - turkeys will not balance their diet fully through foraging alone - but you can back off feed quantities somewhat when pasture quality is good and birds are actively foraging. Watch body condition regularly to make sure birds are not falling behind.

Store feed properly every time. A bag of feed left open in a humid environment or one that rodents can access is a liability. Galvanized metal cans with tight lids are the standard solution for small-flock operations. Check stored feed for any musty smell before using it - if it smells off, do not feed it regardless of how recently you bought it.

Section 4 Health Considerations

Most nutrition-related health problems in turkeys are either deficiencies from inadequate feed programs or problems caused by contaminated feed. Both categories are preventable with attention to the basics.

Vitamin deficiency is more common in turkeys than in many other poultry because their requirements are higher and their starter period is more critical. Vitamin B deficiency - specifically riboflavin and niacin - causes leg weakness and a characteristic curled-toe appearance in poults. If you are seeing young birds with leg problems that started early, look at your feed first. A good commercial turkey starter covers these requirements; improvised rations or chick feed substitutions often do not.

Mycotoxins from moldy grain are a significant concern. Aflatoxin and other fungal toxins that develop in improperly stored grain damage the liver, suppress immunity, and cause a range of symptoms that can look like disease. Turkeys are particularly susceptible. This is the practical reason to store feed carefully and not use feed that shows any sign of mold or unusual smell. If you buy grain in bulk, store it in conditions that keep moisture away and rotate stock so nothing sits too long.

Salt toxicity is possible if birds get access to highly salted foods or if feed is mixed incorrectly with salt at elevated levels. The more common issue on small farms is when well-meaning people offer kitchen scraps or heavily processed foods. Table scraps that are fine for humans contain salt levels that poultry cannot handle well. If you offer kitchen scraps at all, keep it to fresh vegetable trimmings and avoid anything processed or salted.

Feed-related leg problems in Broad-Breasted birds warrant separate mention. These birds are designed to grow fast, and pushing them even faster with very high-protein supplements or extra feeding beyond the standard program stresses their skeletal system. Keep them on the recommended program, provide good footing, and do not be tempted to accelerate what the breed is already doing as fast as it reasonably should.

Section 5 Breed Considerations

Feed program design should account for the breed of turkey you are raising because the growth trajectory and metabolic efficiency differ significantly between commercial and heritage breeds.

Broad-Breasted White and Broad-Breasted Bronze turkeys are built for efficient feed conversion. Commercial feed programs for these birds are well-established and the hatchery or feed company recommendations are reliable. Following the staged starter-grower-finisher program designed for these birds produces predictable results. Where people get into trouble is deviating from the program - either by extending stages beyond what is appropriate, skipping the transition between rations, or adding supplements that disrupt the balance of an already well-designed commercial ration.

Heritage breeds eat more feed per pound of gain than commercial birds because they take longer to reach market weight and have different body composition. This is a known characteristic of heritage production, not a sign that something is wrong. The cost-per-pound of heritage turkey production is higher than commercial, and the feed program reflects that extended timeline. Heritage birds on good pasture partially offset this by foraging, but they are never going to match Broad-Breasted feed conversion numbers. Price your birds accordingly if you are selling them.

Small heritage breeds like the Royal Palm need proportionally less feed overall and can do well on slightly lower protein maintenance rations once they are past the grow-out stage. They are also efficient foragers and do well in systems where pasture access is a meaningful part of their diet. Larger heritage breeds like the Standard Bronze need feed programs more similar to commercial birds in terms of protein levels during grow-out, just extended over a longer timeframe.

Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid

Starting poults on chick starter is the most common and most consequential feeding mistake in turkey raising. It seems harmless because both are labeled as starter feed for poultry, but the protein gap matters. Turkey poults on chick starter at 18 percent protein will grow more slowly, show more developmental problems, and have higher losses than poults started on appropriate 28-percent turkey starter. The extra cost of turkey starter is trivial compared to the cost of suboptimal birds or increased mortality. Do not make this substitution.

Not transitioning between rations gradually causes digestive upset that can look like disease. Birds switched abruptly from one feed formulation to another frequently show loose droppings, reduced appetite, and slower growth for a week or two after the switch. Mixing feeds over a five-to-seven-day transition period essentially eliminates this problem. It takes no extra effort once it becomes habit.

Overfeeding scratch grains is a widespread problem that sneaks up on people because turkeys obviously enjoy scratch and it is inexpensive. Scratch - whole or cracked grains without added vitamins, minerals, or protein balance - dilutes the nutritional quality of your flock's overall diet when fed in large amounts. Think of scratch as a treat or a cold-weather supplement to drive a little extra metabolic heat, not as a feed substitute. If more than ten to fifteen percent of total intake is scratch, you are likely diluting the balanced nutrition your birds need.

Ignoring body condition is a mistake that goes both ways. Birds that are too thin on a free-choice feeding program are usually being outcompeted at the feeder by dominant birds, or there is an underlying health issue suppressing appetite. Birds that are getting obviously fat on a grow-out ration before reaching target weight are usually being fed too much scratch or supplemented beyond what the program calls for. Hands-on assessment of body condition - actually picking up birds and feeling the keel bone - gives you information that visual observation in the pen does not.

Not providing water alongside feed is a mistake that sounds obvious but happens more often than it should - usually because a waterer gets blocked, runs dry, or freezes without the keeper noticing. Turkeys will stop eating if water is not available, and the stress of even a half-day without water in hot weather causes real setbacks. Make water check the first item on your daily turkey checklist, every single day.

Using medicated chick starter intended for coccidiosis prevention in young turkeys can cause problems because the amprolium used in most medicated chick starters can interfere with thiamine absorption in turkeys at higher doses. Some operations do medicate poults, but it requires products specifically labeled for turkeys at appropriate dosing. When in doubt, use unmedicated turkey starter and focus on good brooder hygiene and appropriate stocking density to manage coccidiosis risk.

One more mistake worth calling out is feeding table scraps without thinking about what is actually in them. Giving your turkeys leftover vegetables and fruit trimmings is generally harmless and can be a nice supplement. The problem is when scraps include heavily salted, processed, or seasoned foods. Turkeys cannot handle the sodium levels in typical processed human food, and repeated exposure to high-salt scraps can cause kidney stress and increased water intake followed by wet litter problems. Keep scraps to plain fresh produce, avoid anything heavily seasoned or preserved, and never let scraps sit in the pen and ferment - moldy or fermenting scraps are a direct path to crop and digestive problems.

Finally, not recording what you are feeding is a small habit that has real consequences. If birds start showing a health problem, being able to trace back what they have been eating - which ration, from which supplier, purchased when - helps you and your vet identify feed-related causes quickly. A simple notebook or a note on your phone with feed brand, purchase date, and any changes to the program takes sixty seconds and can save you significant time and birds if something goes wrong.
