The mating behavior of turkeys is elaborate and social - you cannot just put a tom in with hens and expect everything to take care of itself without understanding what normal mating looks like and what disrupts it. Incubation and brooding require equipment and attention whether you are using a hen or a machine. And fertility - the real rate at which your eggs are actually developing embryos - varies more than most beginners expect.

Commercial broad-breasted turkey breeds have an important caveat here: they cannot breed naturally. Their breast muscle development is so extreme that physical mating is biomechanically impossible at full production weight. All commercial turkey production relies on artificial insemination, which is a technical skill that requires training and equipment. If you are raising Broad-breasted Whites or Broad-breasted Bronze, and you want to breed them, that is the path you are on. If you want a naturally self-sustaining breeding flock, you are raising heritage breeds.

Too many toms relative to hens and the toms spend more time fighting each other than mating productively - they disrupt each other's mating attempts and stress the hens without improving fertility. Too few toms and some hens may not be mated frequently enough to maintain good fertility throughout the season, particularly in large flocks where the tom's attention is spread thin. Young toms in their first season are often enthusiastic but not always effective - their mating technique is less developed and their fertility may be lower than a mature tom. Seasonal timing drives turkey breeding in a way that you cannot entirely override. Turkey breeding is photoperiod-controlled - increasing day length in late winter and spring triggers the hormonal cascade that initiates breeding behavior and egg production. In much of North America, hens begin laying in March or April and continue through early summer, with production tapering as day length shortens after the summer solstice. A breeding flock where the tom is active and hens are accepting mating attempts is producing fertile eggs. A flock where the tom is spending most of his time fighting with subordinate males, or where hens are consistently running from or avoiding the tom, is not breeding productively.

Fertility testing is a practical check on your breeding program. Candle eggs at day 7 of incubation to check for developing embryos. A developing egg shows a dark spot with visible blood vessels extending from it. A clear egg is infertile - the embryo never developed. Track your fertility rate across a clutch of eggs to assess whether your breeding group is working. Fertility rates above 80 percent are typical in a well-managed heritage flock. Rates below 60 percent signal something is wrong - the tom may be infertile, the ratio may be off, or the hens may be avoiding mating.

If a hen goes broody, decide whether you want her to set or whether you want to collect her eggs for incubator hatching. A committed broody hen is an excellent incubator - turkey hens are attentive setters and good mothers. Let her remain on a full clutch of 12 to 15 eggs in a quiet, protected location and she will hatch them in about 28 days. Breaking up a broody hen repeatedly to collect her eggs is stressful for the hen and often unsuccessful - she will simply go back on the nest. Mycoplasma infections can be transmitted through eggs to poults, causing respiratory disease in the next generation. Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma meleagridis are both known to infect turkeys. Purchasing tested, certified clean breeding stock from reputable hatcheries reduces this risk substantially. If you are developing your own breeding line over multiple generations, testing your breeders is worth doing to confirm your flock's status before expanding production.

Breeder nutrition directly affects poult health through the egg. Hens deficient in vitamin E produce poults with encephalomalacia - a neurological condition. Riboflavin deficiency causes curled toe paralysis in poults. Manganese deficiency contributes to perosis, a leg deformity. These are not exotic problems - they result from feeding breeder hens a standard grower or finisher ration instead of a breeder-formulated diet with appropriate micronutrient levels. Tom reproductive health can be assessed indirectly through fertility rates and directly if you are considering artificial insemination. Heritage turkey breeds are the only reasonable choice if you want a naturally self-sustaining breeding flock, and within the heritage breeds there is meaningful variation in temperament, size, production, and adaptability that should influence your selection.

Narragansett turkeys have an excellent reputation for calm disposition, good mothering instincts, and adaptability to pasture-based management. They are a mid-sized breed - toms reaching 23 to 28 pounds, hens 12 to 16 pounds - and are considered one of the most practically manageable heritage breeds for small farms. Their mottled gray and black plumage is distinctive and attractive, which also plays well at farmers markets.

Bourbon Red turkeys are perhaps the most popular heritage breed among small-scale producers, valued for their rich chestnut coloring, calm temperament, and good fertility. They are slightly smaller than Narragansetts on average, which appeals to buyers looking for a whole bird that fits a standard oven without acrobatics. Bourbon Reds are active foragers and adjust well to pasture management.

Black Spanish turkeys are an older breed with excellent foraging ability and strong survival instincts. They tend to be somewhat more independent and flighty than Bourbon Reds or Narragansetts, which can be an asset on a farm where turkeys need to fend off predators on range, but can make handling and management slightly more challenging. Their fertility is generally good and their maternal instincts strong.

Standard Bronze turkeys are the heritage version of the traditional American Thanksgiving bird - large, impressive birds with the classic bronze coloring. They grow slower than commercial breeds but produce a large, well-muscled carcass that commands premium prices. Bronze toms at maturity can exceed 30 pounds, which means their mating ability can decline as they age and put on weight.

For beginning turkey breeders, Bourbon Red or Narragansett are the most forgiving starting points - calm, fertile, productive, and well-supported by a community of experienced breeders who can provide guidance.

Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid

Starting a breeding program with too few birds and no selection pressure is a mistake that produces a flock that drifts in quality over time rather than improving. Two hens and a tom is not a breeding program - it is a small flock with no genetic options. When one of those hens underperforms or the tom turns out to have low fertility, you have no backup and no path forward without buying new stock. Start with a breeding group of at least six to eight hens and two unrelated toms that you can rotate or select between. Track which hens produce the most eggs, which produce the most viable eggs, which have the best brooding behavior, and which raise the most poults successfully. Expecting consistent year-round egg production and forcing breeding outside the natural season through intensive lighting manipulation stresses breeding birds and produces inconsistent results. Turkey hens are not chickens - they are more strongly tied to the photoperiod cycle, and their productivity during the natural spring season is significantly better than artificially induced off-season production. Plan your production schedule around the natural spring laying window, which means timing your sales and market commitments accordingly rather than trying to force year-round production from heritage hens.

Mistaking the normal persistence of a tom's mating behavior for aggression and removing him from the breeding group is a mistake that ends your season. Toms are persistent and somewhat rough in their mating behavior - hens get ruffled feathers and occasionally small wounds on the back of the head from tom courtship. This is normal and expected. The threshold for actual intervention is a hen that is being injured beyond minor feather damage or that is so persistently chased that she cannot eat, drink, or rest. Feather saddles on hens protect their back and wing feathers from damage during mating and are a practical management tool when one hen is receiving disproportionate attention.

Not separating the breeding flock from the production flock means your breeding decisions are made by whoever happens to be in proximity rather than by you. Hens in a mixed flock will be mated by whatever toms are present. If you are trying to maintain breed purity, evaluate which tom is producing the traits you want to select for, or produce crosses intentionally rather than accidentally, you need controlled breeding groups in separate spaces during the breeding season. It is a management requirement that pays dividends in knowing what you are producing and maintaining the integrity of your breeding line over time. Separate pens do not need to be elaborate - a simple dividing fence with a gate is sufficient to keep breeding groups distinct during the eight to twelve weeks of peak laying season. After the breeding season ends, flocks can be recombined without concern since fertility tracking is no longer the priority.
