Section 2 Essential Requirements

The most critical decision in run fencing is selecting the right wire material, and this is where many keepers go wrong by choosing chicken wire. Despite its name, chicken wire is actually one of the worst choices for a secure chicken run. The thin wire and large openings do little to stop determined predators. Raccoons can reach through the gaps to grab birds, and most predators can tear right through the flimsy material with minimal effort. Chicken wire might keep your birds contained, but it will not keep predators out, and containment without protection is a recipe for disaster.

Hardware cloth is the gold standard for secure run fencing. This welded wire mesh, typically available in half-inch or quarter-inch grid patterns, is strong enough to resist raccoon hands, dog teeth, and the persistent testing of most common predators. For the lower portion of your run walls where predators are most likely to attack, use hardware cloth with no gaps larger than half an inch. Quarter-inch mesh provides even better protection and prevents snakes and small rodents from entering, though it costs more and can be harder to work with during installation.

The height of your run fencing depends on your breed and your predator concerns, but most standard chicken runs use fencing at least six feet tall. Many lightweight breeds can easily clear a four-foot fence if motivated, and even heavy breeds can flap their way over surprisingly tall barriers when startled or determined. If you have particularly flighty breeds or serious aerial predator pressure, consider covering the top of your run entirely rather than relying on tall walls alone. A covered run provides complete protection and eliminates any worry about birds flying out or predators getting in from above.

Burying fencing along the bottom perimeter of your run stops digging predators, which include foxes, dogs, coyotes, and even determined raccoons. Bury hardware cloth at least twelve inches deep along all fence lines, extending it outward in an L-shape at the bottom. This apron configuration means any animal trying to dig at the fence base hits the buried wire before getting under your barrier. Some keepers simply lay the hardware cloth flat on the ground extending eighteen to twenty-four inches outward from the fence, covering it with soil or gravel, which accomplishes the same goal with less digging during installation.

Fence posts need to be sturdy enough to support your wire material and resist pressure from both inside and outside. Wooden posts work well and look attractive, but they should be pressure-treated or naturally rot-resistant species set at least eighteen inches deep in the ground. Metal T-posts offer excellent strength and durability, though they require different attachment methods for your wire. Whatever posts you choose, space them no more than eight feet apart for most wire types, and consider closer spacing in areas where you expect more stress on the fence.

Gates deserve special attention because they represent the most common weak point in run security. A predator will find and exploit any gap, and gates often develop gaps over time as hardware loosens and wood warps. Use heavy-duty hinges and latches designed for agricultural use, and consider adding a secondary latch or carabiner clip that requires human dexterity to open. Raccoons are remarkably skilled with simple latches and have been known to open basic hook-and-eye closures, so choose hardware that requires two different motions to release.

Section 3 Daily Care And Management

Walking the perimeter of your run should become a regular habit, ideally every few days if not daily. Look for any signs of digging near the fence base, loose wire or posts, and damage from weather or wear. Predators often test fencing repeatedly before finding or creating a weakness, and catching these early investigations lets you reinforce vulnerable spots before an attack succeeds. Pay special attention to corners where two fence sections meet and any areas where wire is attached to posts or frames.

Check gate latches and hinges regularly since these moving parts experience the most wear. A latch that sticks or does not close fully might not seem like an urgent problem until the night a raccoon pushes on the gate at just the right moment. Tighten any loose hardware promptly and replace worn components before they fail completely. Apply lubricant to hinges periodically to prevent rust and keep operation smooth, which makes you more likely to close and latch the gate properly every single time.

Vegetation management along your fence line prevents several problems at once. Climbing plants can weigh down wire and provide cover for predators approaching the fence. Tall grass and brush near the base creates hiding spots and can conceal the early stages of digging attempts. Keep the area immediately around your run fencing clear and mowed, which both improves your ability to spot problems and makes the area less attractive to predators who prefer to approach with cover.

Seasonal inspections should be more thorough than your daily walkarounds, checking for rust, wood rot, and structural integrity that might not be obvious at a glance. Winter freeze and thaw cycles can shift fence posts and create gaps at ground level. Summer heat can warp and loosen components. Spring is an excellent time for a comprehensive fence check and any needed repairs, getting your run fully secure before the active predator season of late spring and summer when many animals are raising young and hunting more aggressively.

Section 4 Health Considerations

Run fencing materials can directly affect your flock's health in ways that go beyond simple predator protection. Sharp edges and exposed wire ends are common on hardware cloth and can cause scratches and cuts that become infected. When installing fencing, take time to fold or cap any cut edges where chickens might rub against them, particularly at chicken height around gates and corners. A chicken with a wound is more vulnerable to infection and may be targeted by flockmates who notice the injury.

Airflow through your run fencing affects respiratory health, particularly in covered runs where air can become stagnant. Solid fencing materials or wind breaks that seem helpful in winter can trap ammonia and moisture during warmer months, creating conditions that stress respiratory systems and encourage disease. Design your run with adequate ventilation year-round, and avoid enclosing your run so thoroughly that air cannot circulate. The balance between weather protection and ventilation requires thought about your specific climate and seasonal conditions.

Visual barriers in fencing can reduce stress for your flock by limiting their view of passing threats. A chicken that constantly sees dogs, cats, or wildlife moving outside the run lives in a state of heightened alertness that affects overall health and egg production. Some keepers add privacy screening to the lower portion of their run fencing, or use solid materials for the bottom two to three feet with hardware cloth above. This approach blocks the view of ground-level movement while maintaining good ventilation and visibility at higher levels.

The run environment created by your fencing setup affects exercise levels, foraging behavior, and mental stimulation, all of which contribute to flock health. A cramped or bare run with nothing but dirt and fencing offers little enrichment and can lead to boredom-related behaviors like feather picking. While fencing defines the boundaries, what you put inside matters too. Include perches at various heights, areas for dust bathing, and ideally some vegetation or features that encourage natural behaviors. Healthy, active chickens are more resistant to disease than bored, sedentary ones, and your run design plays a significant role in making activity possible.

Section 5 Seasonal Considerations

Winter brings unique challenges to run fencing that deserve advance preparation before the first hard freeze. Snow can pile against fencing and create weight that strains posts and wire, and drifting snow against the fence provides a ramp that predators and chickens alike can use to bypass your barriers. Keep snow cleared away from the fence base, and check posts for any shifting or leaning after storms. Metal components are more prone to brittleness in extreme cold, so avoid adjusting or tightening metal parts during deep freezes when they might crack.

Wind protection becomes a priority in cold months, and many keepers add temporary windbreaks to portions of their run fencing. Clear plastic sheeting, tarps, or plywood panels attached to the exterior of the run can block harsh winds while still allowing light through. Position wind protection on the side facing prevailing winter winds, but leave other sides more open to prevent moisture buildup. Remove temporary winter modifications when spring arrives to restore full ventilation.

Summer heat requires the opposite approach, maximizing airflow through your run to help chickens stay cool. If you have added any solid panels or barriers for winter protection, remove them once temperatures climb. Consider adding shade cloth over part of your run to block direct sun while allowing air movement, which is far more effective than solid coverings that trap heat. Position any shade structures to block afternoon sun when temperatures peak.

Spring and fall see increased predator activity as animals raise young or prepare for winter, making these seasons particularly important for fence maintenance. Complete a thorough inspection in early spring before breeding season brings hungry predators hunting more aggressively to feed their young. Check again in fall before winter conditions make repairs more difficult. Many predator attacks happen during these transitional seasons when desperate animals take risks they might avoid during easier times of year.

Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid

Choosing chicken wire for run construction remains the most common and most consequential fencing mistake. The name itself is misleading, suggesting this product was designed for chicken security when in fact it was designed for lightweight containment of poultry that were already inside secure buildings. Chicken wire keeps chickens in but does virtually nothing to keep predators out. Every year, countless chicken keepers learn this lesson the hard way when a determined raccoon, dog, or fox tears through their chicken wire like tissue paper. Invest in hardware cloth from the start, and you will avoid this expensive and heartbreaking lesson.

Underestimating digging predators costs many keepers birds they thought were secure. A run with excellent wall fencing but no buried barrier is essentially an open invitation to foxes, dogs, and other animals that dig as naturally as breathing. Some predators will dig for hours over multiple nights to reach prey they know is inside, and patience is not something predators lack. Install buried fencing or ground-level aprons even if you have never seen digging predators in your area, because they are almost certainly there whether you have noticed them or not.

Leaving gaps at gates and corners creates vulnerabilities that predators will find and exploit. A two-inch gap might not seem significant, but weasels and mink can squeeze through incredibly small openings, and a gap that starts at two inches often widens over time. Check all junctions where fence sections meet, where fencing attaches to the coop, and around gates with particular care. Fill any gap larger than half an inch with additional hardware cloth or solid blocking.

Neglecting overhead protection ignores an entire category of predators that many keepers forget until too late. Hawks, owls, and even some larger birds like crows will take chickens from uncovered runs, particularly young birds and bantam breeds. Aerial predators hunt during daylight hours when your birds are active and exposed in the run. If covering the entire run seems impractical, at least provide covered shelters or dense vegetation inside the run where birds can take cover when they spot aerial threats.

Using substandard posts and fasteners seems like a reasonable way to save money until those components fail under stress. A predator pulling hard on your fencing puts far more force on posts and attachments than normal wear, and weak points tend to fail exactly when it matters most. Use fencing staples or proper wire clips rather than standard staples when attaching hardware cloth to wooden posts. Set posts deep enough and in solid enough material to resist real pressure. The incremental cost of quality structural components is negligible compared to the cost of replacing a destroyed run and lost birds.

Failing to account for gate security undoes all the work you put into your fence walls. Gates see daily use and accumulate wear faster than any other part of your fencing system. A gate that does not close fully, a latch that can be bumped open, or hardware that has loosened over time creates an opening that predators will discover. Train yourself to verify the gate is fully latched every single time you pass through, and teach everyone in your household to do the same. The one time someone forgets to latch the gate properly tends to be the night a predator comes calling.
