A bird that keeps opening its beak, has difficulty swallowing, or shows weight loss despite eating may have canker. It spreads through shared water and through parent birds feeding squab, so an infected parent will almost certainly infect its young. Treatment with ronidazole or metronidazole is effective when caught early, and preventive treatment of breeding birds before nesting season is a common practice in larger operations.

Fan tails with their extraordinary spreads of tail feathers, Jacobins with their feathered hoods, and Tumblers with their aerial acrobatics are fascinating to keep and to show, but they often need more management than utility breeds. Some show breeds have been bred so extremely that they need assistance with basic tasks - certain Jacobins cannot see well enough to feed their own young without intervention. Know what you are getting into with highly modified show breeds before committing.

For a beginner who wants a versatile, capable bird that is easy to manage and produces well, a utility homer or a mixed-blood loft bird is honestly the best starting point. These birds are hardy, smart, easy to handle, and give you a chance to learn pigeon management without the added complexity of working with a specialized breed.

Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid

The most costly mistake new pigeon keepers make is rushing to get birds before the loft is actually ready. It is tempting to pick up a few birds at a swap meet and figure out the housing situation afterward, but pigeons that are not properly established in a secure, well-designed loft will leave and not come back - or they will stay and immediately develop health problems from inadequate conditions. Pigeons need insoluble grit for their gizzard function and soluble minerals for calcium. Pigeon-specific mineral mixes are available and inexpensive - keep them available at all times in a separate container from the feed, and your birds will self-regulate their intake as needed.

Finally, a mistake that crosses into animal welfare territory is keeping pigeons in complete confinement long-term without adequate space or social structure.
