The stress removal perspective on bedding centers on recognizing that pigs spend much of their time lying down, and what they lie on directly affects their comfort and wellbeing. Pigs on inadequate bedding may develop skin sores, respiratory problems from dusty or moldy material, and joint issues from lying on hard surfaces. Pigs that are uncomfortable do not rest well, do not convert feed as efficiently, and are more prone to behavioral problems that stem from chronic low-level stress. Kiln-dried shavings are preferred because they have lower moisture content and are less likely to harbor mold spores. The fine particles provide a soft, comfortable surface and absorb urine effectively, keeping pigs drier than straw alone might. However, wood shavings can be dusty, which poses respiratory concerns for both pigs and handlers in enclosed spaces. They also tend to stick to wet piglets and can be inadvertently consumed, though pigs quickly learn not to eat them. Shavings compact over time and need to be fluffed or replaced more frequently than straw to maintain their loft and absorption.

Sawdust is sometimes used as bedding, but it presents more problems than shavings due to its fine particle size. While hay works similarly to straw for physical comfort, it costs more and is more likely to be consumed by pigs than straw. Using good quality hay as bedding is generally uneconomical, but spoiled or moldy hay that cannot be fed can be repurposed as bedding with reasonable results. Be cautious about heavily molded hay, as mold spores can affect pig respiratory health.

Sand has gained attention as bedding for pigs in some systems, offering excellent drainage and durability. Sand does not break down, can be cleaned and reused, and provides a cool surface in hot weather. However, sand provides no insulation for cold weather, can be abrasive on skin with constant contact, and is heavy to manage. Some producers use sand in outdoor lots or under waterers where drainage is critical, while using organic bedding in sleeping areas where comfort and insulation matter more.

Section 3 Daily Care And Management

The fundamental principle of bedding management is keeping it dry, because wet bedding causes problems ranging from ammonia buildup to skin irritation to accelerated breakdown of the material itself. Pigs naturally establish dunging areas away from where they sleep, which helps keep sleeping areas cleaner, but this only works if they have enough space to separate these functions. In crowded conditions or poorly designed facilities, pigs may have no choice but to eliminate where they sleep, leading to constantly soiled bedding that requires more frequent changing.

Daily observation of bedding condition should be part of your routine when checking on pigs. Look for wet spots that may indicate drainage problems, water leaks, or pigs that have not learned proper dunging patterns. Smell the air at pig level because ammonia builds up near the floor where pigs breathe and may not be noticeable at human standing height. Excessive ammonia damages respiratory tissues over time and indicates that bedding needs to be removed or additional dry bedding added. Watch for pigs that seem reluctant to lie down or that develop skin sores, both of which may indicate bedding problems.

Spot cleaning, removing soiled areas while leaving clean bedding in place, extends the time between complete bedding changes and reduces overall bedding consumption. This works well with straw bedding that can be forked out in sections. Shavings are harder to spot clean because they mix together, so soiled areas tend to contaminate surrounding material. How often you need to completely change bedding depends on stocking density, pig size, bedding material, and weather conditions. In cold weather when ventilation is reduced, bedding may need changing more frequently to manage ammonia. In summer with open-sided housing and good airflow, bedding may last longer.

Bedding depth matters for both comfort and function. Too thin a layer provides inadequate cushioning and insulation, while excessively deep bedding may harbor moisture in lower layers where it cannot dry out. For straw, a depth of six to twelve inches in sleeping areas usually provides good results, allowing pigs to nest down while still being manageable to maintain. Finding the balance between comfortable softness and practical durability requires matching your bedding choice to your specific pigs and conditions.

Mold in bedding poses health risks that are sometimes overlooked. Moldy straw or hay releases spores that pigs inhale, potentially causing respiratory disease. Some molds produce mycotoxins that affect pig health even in small quantities. Preventing mold starts with purchasing quality bedding that was properly dried before storage, storing it in a dry location protected from weather, and not using material that smells musty or shows visible mold growth. Once bedding is in the pig area, keeping it dry prevents mold development. If you discover mold in stored bedding, do not use it for pigs.

Thermal regulation is another health dimension of bedding selection. Pigs cannot sweat and are vulnerable to both heat and cold stress depending on the season. In cold weather, deep straw bedding allows pigs to nest and retain body heat, reducing energy expenditure for thermoregulation and improving feed efficiency. In hot weather, the same deep bedding may trap heat and make pigs uncomfortable, so reducing bedding depth or providing cool, damp wallowing areas gives pigs options for cooling. Adjusting bedding management seasonally supports pig health throughout the year.

Section 5 Breed Considerations

Pig size influences bedding needs in ways that new owners sometimes fail to anticipate. Larger pigs generate more waste, compress bedding more quickly, and need more physical space per animal. A bedding budget and management routine that works well for a pair of potbellied pigs becomes completely inadequate when applied to large breed pigs or commercial crosses. If you are raising feeder pigs that will reach market weight of 250 pounds or more, plan your bedding management around that final size rather than the cute fifty-pound piglets you started with. What seems like plenty of bedding when pigs are small becomes thin, compacted, and inadequate as they grow.

Hair coverage varies among pig breeds and affects how much protection they need from bedding. Heritage breeds with more hair, like Mangalitsas with their woolly coats, have natural insulation that allows them to tolerate cooler conditions with less bedding than relatively hairless commercial breeds. Potbellied pigs and KuneKunes have moderate hair coverage and typically do fine with standard bedding approaches. Very lean commercial breeds with minimal hair coverage may need deeper bedding in cold weather to maintain comfort, or supplemental heat if bedding alone is not sufficient.

Bedding behavior also varies among individual pigs and can have some breed tendencies. Some pigs are enthusiastic nest builders who will spend considerable time arranging straw into elaborate sleeping nests, while others lie down wherever and do not seem to care about their bedding configuration. Pigs with strong nest building instincts benefit from bedding materials like straw that they can manipulate and rearrange. Pigs that do not engage in nest building may do equally well on shavings or other materials that provide comfort without manipulation opportunities.

Rooting behavior, which is universal to all pigs but varies in intensity, affects how quickly bedding gets turned over, mixed with manure, and compressed. Pigs with strong rooting drives may root up and redistribute bedding constantly, mixing clean and soiled material and accelerating the need for bedding changes. Providing appropriate rooting opportunities outside the bedded area, such as a rooting box or outdoor area with loose soil, can reduce some of this behavior and help bedding last longer.

Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid

The most common bedding mistake I see is simply not using enough of it, particularly among people trying to minimize expenses or workload. A thin layer of bedding that barely covers the floor provides almost no insulation, compresses immediately under pig weight, and becomes soiled throughout within hours. The result is pigs lying on what is essentially a dirty, damp floor with a token dusting of bedding material. Use adequate depth to actually cushion and insulate your pigs, and accept that this means using more material and changing it more frequently than the minimum you might hope to get away with.

The opposite mistake, though less common, is letting bedding build up excessively without ever removing the lower layers. Some deep-bedding systems intentionally allow bedding to accumulate and compost in place, but these require specific management to work properly. Simply piling new bedding on top of old without understanding the composting dynamics results in anaerobic conditions in the lower layers, ammonia production, and wet, unhealthy environments under what looks like clean surface bedding. If you are using a deep-bedding approach, learn how to manage it properly. If not, remove soiled bedding regularly rather than just covering it up.

Using whatever material is cheapest without considering its suitability for pigs leads to preventable problems. Construction waste wood chips may contain treated lumber that is toxic to pigs. Black walnut shavings are toxic to some animals and should be avoided with pigs until more research clarifies the risk. Random organic materials like leaves or grass clippings may contain pesticides, decompose too quickly, or harbor parasites and pathogens. Stick to materials with established track records for pig bedding rather than experimenting with unknown materials to save money.

Failing to store bedding properly degrades its quality before you even use it. Straw that gets rained on, then baled or stacked wet, will mold and be unusable or harmful. Shavings stored in torn bags absorb moisture and compact. Poor storage wastes money and potentially creates health hazards. Protect your bedding investment by storing materials in dry locations, elevated off the ground, and covered to prevent weather damage.

Finally, many people underestimate ventilation needs when managing bedded pig housing. Good bedding management alone cannot overcome poor ventilation, because ammonia and moisture will accumulate regardless of how often you change bedding if the air is not moving. Make sure your pig housing has adequate airflow to carry away moisture and gases, even in cold weather when the instinct is to seal everything up to retain heat. Fresh air is as important to pig health as clean bedding, and the two must work together.
